[Angiography characters changes of melanoma of choroid: a case report].

PURPOSE: To report the ophthalmologic graphic characters of a case of melanoma of Choroid. METHODS: Retrospectively analysis the characters of fundus fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), B-ultrasonic scan and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of a melanoma of choroid patient whose diagnosis has been made by pathology. RESULTS: FFA of the left eye indicated there were large sheets of obscure fluorescence and scattered hyperfluorescence spots in the early stage. In the late stage we found confluent hyperfluorescence spots strengthened in the focus area and no obvious abnormal vessels or typical "double circulation sign" appeared. ICGA's early stage showed hypofluorescence in the focus area and hyperfluorescence spots of choroid blood capillarys. In the late stages of ICGA, we found sheets of hyperfluorescence upon the focus area and no obvious "barrette-like" or "comb-like" abnormal vessel signs. OCT found all layers of the retina and the choroidcapillary layer hunched to the vitreous cavity. B-ultrasonic scan indicated high-echo mass situated in the posterior pole. CONCLUSION: The melanoma of choroid's FA and ICGA can display different forms, so we should apply to other examinations besides these two angiography examinations and have frequently followed up when we are confronted with atypical melanoma of choroid patients.

[Character and reasons for change in mitochondrial ATP content during auto-oscillation of ion currents].

The changes in the adenosine triphosphate content in the course of ionic flux oscillations in mitochondria were estimated by using the chemiluminescence method. The ATP concentration changes were shown to be of cyclic character; the oscillations in the ATP content were shifted by 180 degrees C against those of K+ fluxes. The oligomycin-induced oxidative phosphorylation blocking changed (but did not eliminate) the oscillational character of the ATP content in mitochondrial suspensions. It was concluded that substrate phosphorylation is the source of ATP under conditions of oxidative phosphorylation inhibition. Incubation of mitochondria in the presence of exogenous ATP led to suppression of ionic flux oscillations.

The timing of secondary sex characters and their relationship to the pubertal maximum of linear growth in girls.

The timing and interrelationships between stages of secondary sex characters and the pubertal maximum of growth were studied in a prospective longitudinal study of 90 Swedish girls, followed from birth to adulthood. The results show that there is a close correlation between some of the stages of secondary sex characters and the pubertal maximum of growth in girls.

A new morphological character to distinguish Sergentomyia and Phlebotomus.

Although the genera Sergentomyia, Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia are widely accepted, there is no character state which distinguishes them. Many Sergentomyia spp. have erect abdominal tergal setae normally characteristic of Phlebotomus; some Sergentomyia spp. lack cibarial armature "characteristic" of the genus, while some Phlebotomus spp. show this armature. Lutzomyia is "defined" by thoracic pleural setae and a cibarial bulge, both of which states occur on Old World forms. Lutzomyia may be defined geographically, but the use of geographical distribution in taxonomy leads to circular biogeographical arguments, and is invalid. The microtrichia of abdominal tergite six and sometimes four and five of the males of ten species of Sergentomyia (Subgenera Grassomyia, Sintonius, Sergentomyia and Parrotomyia) were found to be dimorphic. Those of 16 species of Phlebotomus, Chinius and Lutzomyia were monomorphic. In the subgenus: Parvidens, S. lesleyae males had dimorphic microtrichia on tergites five and six while those of S. heischi were monomorphic. Two other characters of tergal chaetotaxy, of probable taxonomic potential, are also described.

Timing and character of reciprocal temporomandibular joint sounds in an asymptomatic orthodontic sample.

The timing and character of opening and closing temporomandibular joint sounds were evaluated in a sample of 33 asymptomatic subjects with reciprocal clicking. Using stereophonic headphones and videotape recordings, three consecutive reciprocal sounds were recorded and analyzed. The timing of the three consecutive opening and closing sounds was consistent in the majority of subjects, and occurred generally on late opening and middle to late closing. When the timing, character (frequency, amplitude, and duration), and wave patterns were evaluated, a notable amount of variation was observed in the overall sample. This suggested a variety of intra-articular reasons for the reciprocal sounds in this particular sample of subjects.

[The influences of habitual side chewing and the character of food on the masticatory muscle activity in children].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of habitual side chewing and the characteristics of food on the masticatory muscle function in children. A total of thirty persons were subjected to the study; 10 with deciduous dentition (designated as G1), 10 with mixed dentition (as G2), 10 with permanent dentition (as G3), none of whom had any gnatho-facial dysfunction. EMGs were recorded from the temporal anterior muscles and masseter muscles on both sides, and the mandibular movement on the frontal plane was recorded during chewing of boiled fish cake paste, chewing-gum and chewing of dried cuttlefish on both the habitual side and the non-habitual side. EMG activities obtained and periods of closed phase, occlusal phase and open phase in the pathway of the mandibular movement were measured with a personal computer system. The relationship between the total muscle activities at clenching in the intercuspal position and the total muscle activities at chewing were also evaluated. The results obtained in the present study were as follows: 1) Influence of habitual side chewing on the rhythm of the mandibular movement during chewing of chewing-gum was not found in all groups. Influence on EMG activities was not found in G1 and G2, but were presented in G3. 2) Influence of the character of food on rhythm of mandibular movement was not clear in G1, but as found in the other groups, while EMG activities were influenced by the character of food in all groups. 3) The MA Index (the ratio of total muscle activities while chewing to total muscle activities at clenching) showed a decrease with age. As far as the results of the present study is concerned, it could be suggested that the proficiency of the chewing ability is dependent on the dentitional growth. Furthermore, the MA Index was considered to be appropriate for evaluating the masticatory muscle function in children.

Enduring sadness. Early loss, vulnerability, and the shaping of character.

This paper describes the psychoanalysis of two individuals, a child (Andrew) and an adult (Quentin), who suffered from early disruptions in their families. Their fathers played prominent roles as caregivers during prolonged periods and buffered the traumatic loss of their mothers. Both Andrew and Quentin had family histories of depression and both developed depressive and characterological difficulties marked by disturbances in the regulation of aggression, with sadistic and masochistic features. Their early childhoods and experience of recurrent loss, longing, and anger were reconstructed during psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis was therapeutically useful in relieving acute symptoms and in helping both patients move ahead in their development more securely and less burdened by diffuse, inner- and outer-directed rage. Andrew returned for psychotherapy twice, in early and late adolescence, and it was possible to follow the course of his character development during the transition from childhood into young adulthood. Using the clinical psychoanalysis as a base, the paper describes aspects of the development of character with a special emphasis on the roles of loss and the representation of aggression.

Changes in hemodynamic variables during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. Effects of flow rate, flow character, and arterial pH.

During hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass, the effects on hemodynamic variables of alternating pump flow rate between 1.5 and 2.0 L.min-1.m-2, flow character between nonpulsatile and pulsatile perfusion, and acid-base management between pH- and alpha-stat control were studied in a crossover factorial experiment. Twenty-four patients who were undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting were studied during stable hypothermic (27 degrees to 29 degrees C) cardiopulmonary bypass. A minimum of two (when time allowed, three) consecutive 10-minute periods (period 1, 2, or 3) were investigated. Only stage of the study period during cardiopulmonary bypass, flow rate, and interaction between stage and acid-base management were found to have significant effects on mean arterial pressure. In all patients, there were average increases in mean arterial pressure from period 1 to period 2 of 9.4 (95% confidence interval 5.8, 13.0) mm Hg, from period 2 to period 3 of 6.3 (95% confidence interval 1.2, 11.4) mm Hg, and from period 1 to period 3 of 15.7 (95% confidence interval 10.6, 20.9) mm Hg. At 2.0 L.min-1.m-2, mean arterial pressure was 7.2 (95% confidence interval 1.6, 12.9) mm Hg higher than at 1.5 L.min-1.m-2. Peripheral vascular resistance was significantly affected only by stage and flow rate. There were, in all patients, mean increases in peripheral vascular resistance from period 1 to period 2 of 239 (95% confidence interval 135, 343) dynes.sec.cm-5, from period 2 to period 3 of 85 (-64, 234) dynes.sec.cm-5, and from period 1 to period 3 of 324 (95% confidence interval 175, 473) dynes.sec.cm-5. At 1.5 L.min-1.m-2, the peripheral vascular resistance was 316 (95% confidence interval 152, 480) dynes.sec.cm-5 higher than at 2.0 L.min-1.m-2. Alteration in flow rate, but not flow character or arterial pH, had a significant effect on peripheral vascular resistance. It is hypothesized that the increase in peripheral vascular resistance during the course of cardiopulmonary bypass results from an active capillary mechanism, whereas the increase that is associated with reduction in flow rate reflects a passive mechanism. The increase in peripheral vascular resistance with decrease in flow rate indicates impaired tissue perfusion, unlike that occurring with stage.

[Effect of the combined action of hydrogen fluoride and phosphine on the structural and functional properties of the sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes of the myocardium with nutrition of varying character].

A study was made of the activity of transport ATPases of rat myocardial sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes under the conditions of different-character nutrition and under the action of hydrogen fluoride and phosphine. The combined effect of the gases under study was accompanied by activation of Ca2+ ATPase and total ATPase. The character of nutrition, the degree of its adequacy according to retinol, tocopherol, ascorbic acid and essential amino acids (lysine, methionine, and threonine) determined not only the activity of transport ATPases and the phospholipid content of sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes but also the features of the toxic effects of hydrogen fluoride and phosphine. The enrichment of the diet with retinol, tocopherol, ascorbic acid and thiamine reduces the toxic effects of these gases under the conditions of acute and chronic priming as well.

On the character of hygienic science.

In its nature, ends and purposes, hygiene is a medical science. Consequently, it can be axiomatically accepted that the character of medicine is also the character of hygiene. Traditionally, medicine ranks among biological sciences. The author deliberates on the need to regard the current complex of medical sciences, hygiene included, as socio-biological sciences.

Assessment of the character and incidence of electrocardiographic changes in children with simple obesity.

The studied group comprised 82 children with simple obesity. In the group the character and frequency of ECG changes in 12 conventional leads were analyzed. A correlation was established between the character and frequency of these changes and the degree of overweight and obesity duration. In children with simple obesity a considerable prevalence was observed of disturbances of sinus rhythm, impairment of intraventricular conduction and signs of left ventricular hypertrophy. The observed changes were more frequent in children with over 5 years of obesity duration. No correlation was demonstrated between the incidence of these changes and the degree of overweight.

Staphylococcus aureus: characters associated with its pathogenicity and sensitivity to antibiotics.

A hundred staphylococcus strains recently isolated from hospital specimens of various kinds were first divided into two groups: mannitol-positive (90 strains) and mannitol-negative (10 strains). Their ability to produce protein A was then correlated with the presence of other metabolic and enzymatic characters typical of S.aureus. The results showed that satisfactory identification of S. aureus in clinical practice requires assessment of other more species-specific characters in addition to the mannitol fermentation, though this is useful as a preliminary screening measure. Evaluation of protein A production would seem as good or even better than evaluation of coagulase for this purpose. It was also found that the strains examined displayed an increased resistance to methicillin, particularly the part of non-aureus (mainly S.epidermidis) strains. Nearly all strains displayed resistance to the penicillins through the production of penicillinase.

The influence of the mating system on the maintenance of genetic variability in polygenic characters.

The traditional models of the effect of assortative mating and inbreeding on the genetic variance of polygenic characters (FISHER 1918; WRIGHT 1921) presume that there is no natural selection or mutation. In a large population, the genetic variance determined by additive genes may then increase by up to a factor of two with local inbreeding, and even more with assortative mating. The classical models are still used to interpret data from natural populations. But contrary to their assumptions, most metrical characters in natural populations are usually thought to be under a type of selection which depletes polygenic variation. Mutation is then necessary to maintain genetic variation. The present models show that with the additional features of mutation and selection, in a large population, the mating system has no influence on the amount of genetic variability maintained by additive genes.

Tests for character displacement.

Character displacement is an important concept in ecology which has been surrounded by controversy due largely to a lack of clearly stated hypotheses and statistical tests. Existing tests implicity assume random species sizes estimated without error--a random-effects model. We introduce the log-uniform distribution for species sizes and show that it has properties of direct relevance to character displacement. We present tests which assume uniform and log-normal species sizes and have the log-uniform distribution as an alternative. The tests have low power for sample sizes typically encountered in ecology. The effect of estimating species sizes is small. The results exemplify the shortcomings of the traditional random-effects model for species sizes.

[Prevalence and transferability of the plasmid lac+ character in "Klebsiella" sp. strains with "lac+-forte" phenotype].

36 strains of Klebsiella sp. showing a strong lactose-positive phenotype were examined for presence of R factors and for ability to promote the transfer of character lac+; 10 of the 13 R+ strains were able to transfer lac+ character and 4 showed the presence of R-lac factors. Transfer of R-lac factors from Klebsiella sp. strains to Salmonella typhi clinical isolates has also been obtained.

[Character changes in the premorbid phase of patients with nuclear schizophrenia].

This report is based on an investigation into the premorbid characters of 51 patients afflicted with "nuclear schizophrenia" (the nature of course of the disease having been bland in 19, paranoid in another 19, and hebephrenic in 13 cases). The characters in premorbidity may be divided into 3 groups: schizoid (20 cases); reactive-labile (15 cases); and explosive-epileptic (13 cases). The development of all patients afflicted with "nuclear schizophrenia" showed characteropathies conditioned by asynchronism, slowed rate of motor maturation, and affective immaturity. In the bland course of disease a narrowing of interests, one-sidedness, unstability, and quick fatigability are found at an early stage. In the paranoid course of disease a lack of drive was found in development: initiative-less, passive children who subordinated themselves, In the later hebephrenic forms there was found, in development, a weakness in emotional contact with an in the affective response to the environment. The study of characteropathies may contribute to an early prophylaxis.

[Phasic character of neuroendocrine disorders in cerebral contusions].

A phase character of neuroendocrine disorders and their relationship with the neurological symptoms were established in patients with contusion of the brain. A long duration of the adrenergic-corticoid stage depending on the severity of the craniocerebral trauma was revealed. Regression of the neurological symptoms occurs in the stage of corticosteroid concentration reduction. Not all hormonal disorders disappear in the anabolic stage and the stage of restoration of the fat resources; this calls for pathogenetic correction with due consideration for the phase character of the course of the craniocerebral trauma.

Quantitative genetics and the evolution of ontogeny. II. Genetic and environmental correlations among age-specific characters in randombred house mice.

In this study, phenotypic, genetic, maternal and residual environmental correlations among all pairs of six ages (17, 24, 31, 38, 45 and 52 days) were calculated for each of five morphometric characters (body weight, head length, trunk length, trunk circumference, and tail length) in ICR randombred house mice. The maternal correlations between ages averaged nearly unity for all characters, and the overall level (and integration, I) of the genetic correlations (mean level = 0.82, mean I = 0.85) was greater than that for the residual environmental correlations (mean level = 0.26, mean I = 0.32). The patterns of the phenotypic and genetic correlations were similar, with the highest correlations being between contiguous ages and a relatively smooth decrease in correlations for increasingly distant ages. Nearly all of the genetic covariation among ages was explained by the first (average = 86%) and second (average = 14%) components derived from principal components analysis of the genetic correlations. Genes with basically equal pleiotropic effects presumably generated the first component, genes with different effects among ages the second component. From the patterns of genetic correlations, it is predicted that direct selection on any given age would result in a moderate, positive response at most other ages, with more change in the height relative to the shape of the growth curve for each characteristic.
