Cysticercus bovis s. inermis, the larvae phase of Taenia saginata is still widely spread. Many reasons are at the origin thereof, e.g. incomplete destruction of the eggs of Taenia saginata during the waste water purification process and differing meat inspection practises. In an area with the same environmental and animal breeding and fattening conditions a yearly average of 6.49% infestation is found in one slaughterhouse, whilst the yearly average in a neighbouring slaughterhouse is 0.93%. The masseter muscles are the main site of infestation. The meat inspection legislation contributes to the infestation with tape-worms in man because of the weakening of the official inspection procedures.
Mathevolepis junlanae sp. n. from shrews (Sorex spp.) of Far East is described given. The new species occupies an intermediate position between the Palaearctic species M. petrotschenkoi Spassky, 1948 (total number of proglottids--4) and M. skrjabini (Sadovskaya, 1965) (10-12 segments in a series) by the number of synchronously developing proglottids (2-4). The new species differs from M. larbi Karpenko, 1982 by the structure and measurements of copulative apparatus in proglottids. In M. larbi, vagina S-shaped, vagina length 0.147-0.154 mm, cirrus length 0.146-0.149 mm, and cirrus bursa reaching aporal excretory vessels. M. junlanae sp. n. has cirrus bursa slightly crossing center line of sexually mature proglottids, cirrus about half as long (0.084-0.092 mm), and smaller sac-shaped vagina (0.075-0.10 mm). The new species differs from the Nearctic representative M. macyi (Locker and Rausch, 1952) by lesser measurements of cirrus bursa (0.12-0.14 mm versus 0.4 mm) and a fewer number of proglottids in series (2-4 versus 5-7).
The description and differential diagnosis of a new species Brachylepis gulyaevi nov. sp. (the genus Brachylepis Karpenko, Gulyaev, 1999) from Sorex shrews of the North-Eastern Altai is given. Brachylepis gulyaevi nov. sp. differs from other species of the genus in the number of proglottids in strobila, length and armament of cirrus, presence of glandular cells covering cirrus pouch, external seminal vesicule and vagina. The mature uterine segments are very long and comparable with the length of strobila.

The tegument of the mature proglottids of M. ctenoides was examined by means of TEM. The tegument of this species consists of two layers: (1) the external cytoplasm, and (2) the tegumental perikarya situated in the cortical parenchyma. The tegument surface is covered by typical microtriches. The anucleated external layer of cytoplasm is rich in vesicles of different shape and electron-density, but it lacks mitochondria. Large pore canals penetrate the external cytoplasmic layer. This layer is separated from the perikarya by a basal lamina, being connected with the tegument cell bodies by cytoplasmic bridges. The granular cytoplasm of perikarya contains typical cell organelles such as mitochondria, GER, Golgi complexes, free rybosomes, numerous vesicles and lipid droplets inclusions. The large nuclei of the perikarya with prominent nucleoli frequently contain large intranuclear, highly osmiophilic lipid droplets.
1. The analysis of total protoscolex DNA and some rDNA recombinants of Echinococcus granulosus by restriction endonuclease mapping and hybridization to rDNA probes indicated the complex organization of the ribosomal RNA genes and that some repeat units are larger than 15 kb. The non-transcribed spacer can be up to 13 kb in length in some repeat units. 2. Restriction site polymorphism was detected mainly in the nontranscribed spacer regions although some polymorphism was also observed in the 28S rRNA coding region. 3. On the basis of Southern blot hybridization using EcoRI-digested genomic DNA, we conclude that the repeat units containing an extra EcoRI site are present almost in the same proportion as the repeat units without the extra EcoRI site in the 28S rRNA coding region.

The survival of Moniezia expansa eggs in the droppings of lambs was investigated at various temperatures in laboratory conditions and on test plots outdoors. The optimum temperature of the livability of M. expansa eggs in laboratory conditions is 5 degrees C; at this temperature 10% of oncospheres survived after 161 days. At the temperatures of 10, 25, 35 degrees C the oncospheres survived 105, 28, 46 days respectively, at -12 degrees C it was 28 days. It was for 21 and 35 days that on the test grassy plots the eggs of M. expansa survived in the droppings of lambs in the summer months of July and August at the average air temperatures of 15.7-18.2 degrees C and relative humidity of 67.7-74.3%. In autumn in September and October, at the average temperatures of 5.8-14.6 degrees C and relative humidity of 65.3-76.7% the oncospheres survived for 49 to 91 days. The M. expansa eggs in the droppings of lambs were able to survive on the test plot. The living oncospheres were demonstrated for 119 days from November 1987 to March 1988, and for 175 days till May by means of experimental infection of intermediate hosts.

Dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. The number of eggs in strobiles has been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production of the tapeworm per day (10.43 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximum number of eggs in a mature strobile (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg number in a mature strobile.
