Designing quality brochures.

Many formulas may be used to create a brochure. The main goal is to entice people to read the material. Designing and preparing brochures in house offers a great deal of flexibility and is generally less expensive than having them designed outside. Brochures can be produced very creatively, and they give the education department yet another opportunity to develop professionally.

Relationships among student and graduate caring ability and professional school climate.

This study represents the second phase in a longitudinal study of the development of caring ability in registered nurses. A nationwide sample of female graduates of US baccalaureate nursing programs was resurveyed 3 years after the phase-one survey taken during nursing school. The purpose of the study was to continue an evaluation of several variables contributing to the development of professional caring ability. Previously validated instruments were used to measure caring ability (Caring Ability Inventory), maternal and paternal care (Parental Bonding Instrument), and the caring climate of the respective nursing schools (Charles F. Kettering Ltd. School Climate Profile). Although parental bonding scores remained unchanged from the initial survey, caring ability scores significantly increased after entry into practice (paired student's t test, P < .001). The strongest predictor of postgraduate caring ability was student caring ability scores (r = .58, P < .001). When student caring ability scores were excluded as a potential predictor during stepwise multiple regression analysis, school climate scores were the strongest predictor of postgraduate caring ability (r = .17, P < .05). This suggests that development of professional caring ability is related to caring school environments. Furthermore, caring ability as a student predicts further development of caring ability after entry into practice.

A policy for allocating off-site continuing education funds.

Providing support for travel to conferences, workshops and other off-site continuing education activities is an expensive component of a professional development program. The authors describe a policy addressing this issue which was implemented within the multidisciplinary environment of a comprehensive cancer centre. The policy is open, easily adapted to changes in overall funding and can be used to reflect the organization's expectations regarding employee performance in service, academic, management and leadership roles.

Corporate compliance: framework and implementation.

The federal government has created numerous programs to combat fraud and abuse. The government now encourages healthcare facilities to have a corporate compliance program (CCP), a plan that reduces the chances that the facility will violate laws or regulations. A CCP is an organization-wide program comprised of a code of conduct and written policies, internal monitoring and auditing standards, employee training, feedback mechanisms and other features, all designed to prevent and detect violations of governmental laws, regulations and policies. It is a system or method ensuring that employees understand and will comply with laws that apply to what they do every day. Seven factors, based on federal sentencing guidelines, provide the framework for developing a CCP. First, a facility must establish rules that are reasonably capable of reducing criminal conduct. Second, high-level personnel must oversee the compliance effort. Third, a facility must use due care in delegating authority in the compliance initiative. Fourth, standards must be communicated effectively to employees, and fifth, a facility must take reasonable steps to achieve compliance. Sixth, standards must be enforced consistently across the organization and last, standards must be modified or changed for reported concerns, to ensure they are not repeated. PROMINA Health System, Inc. in Atlanta, Ga., designed a program to meet federal guidelines. It started with a self-assessment to define its areas or risk. Next, it created the internal structure and assigned organizational responsibility for running the CCP. PROMINA then developed standards of business and professional conduct, established vehicles of communication and trained employees on the standards. Finally, it continues to develop evidence of the program's effectiveness by monitoring and documenting its compliance activities.

Pursuing quality improvement: a social work perspective.

The multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with chronic renal failure has existed since the inception of the Medicare end-stage renal disease (ESRD) Program. Social workers as team members in the various renal outpatient treatment settings have contributed to the planning and assessment of patient needs with the goal of achieving the optimal quality of life available to each individual. Nephrology social workers have also participated in the evolution of quality management through their professional organization. The eight clinical indicators jointly developed by the Council of Nephrology Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers provide a basis for the implementation of continuous quality improvement concepts. The Health Care Financing Administration, the administrative agency of the ESRD Program, has shifted its quality management approach from quality assurance to the broader concepts of continuous quality improvement. The Health Care Quality Improvement Program provides the structure for all professionals to develop a facility-based system for quality management. By using strategies of quality control and quality improvement, social workers will be able to demonstrate the positive benefit of social service intervention. Identification of useful psychological and functional assessment tools must be incorporated into social work practice to measure outcome. Social workers have the necessary expertise in conflict resolution and group dynamics, which are skills needed for team facilitators used within the conceptual framework of continuous quality improvement. The challenge is to learn these concepts and incorporate them into the daily operation of social work practice.

Decision-making in palliative and continuing care in the community: an analysis of the published literature with reference to the context of UK care provision.

Palliative and continuing care in the United Kingdom (UK) is provided by a range of health and social care professionals who work within a variety of statutory and non-statutory organisations. This selective review of the literature focuses upon palliative and continuing care decision-making undertaken by district nurses and social workers as an exemplar of interprofessional decision-making. The decision-making process is complex and heavily influenced by the organisations employing district nurses and social workers. A model of strategic decision-making is identified which facilitates the exploration of events within the context of practice, thus providing a greater understanding of the process and outcomes to inform the professional development of practitioners.
