[The evolution of female single parent families in various regions of Quebec, 1971-1981].

Developments concerning single-parent, female-headed households in Quebec are analyzed. The authors note that in contrast to past experience, "the new single parent family is in most cases the result of a voluntary disruption of the household, or of a birth outside marriage; its head is mostly--and increasingly--the mother; and it concerns an increasingly younger population, among parents as well as children." Differences among metropolitan regions are analyzed with regard to labor force participation, income, and housing conditions. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

[Nuptiality and professional groups in Quebec during the French regime].

"The demographic regime that historically characterizes any given society constitutes a complex whole in which several elements interact. In relation to marriages, we have been able to demonstrate that, for the City of Quebec during the French regime, the age of first marriages reflects a specific division of tasks according to sex within the family. At the same time, it is a reflection of the differences that exist in the possibilities for getting established and the requirements of rank among the various professional groups. Moreover, the study of matrimonial ties demonstrates the degree of professional endogamy, which is much stronger within the upper group (officers and merchants)." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

[Social demography in Quebec: a preliminary account].

"The goal of this paper is to review those explanatory models that dominate social demography in Quebec. The classical organization of demography, which calls upon the three components of demographic reproduction--fertility, migration and mortality--is followed. The concluding part of the paper deals with the concept of 'demographic regime', which aims to bring the three components together into an overall theory of demographic reproduction. The paper shows that if the functionalist and empirical tradition (mostly American) has dominated the field of demography for a very long time, feminist and materialistic approaches have recently appeared for the interpretation of demographic realities." [Tubal ligation and vasectomies in Quebec. Recent trends].

The author analyzes recent trends in the number of tubal ligations and vasectomies performed in Quebec, Canada, using data for cohorts born since 1941. She finds that since the early 1980s, there has been "a decrease in the proportion of sterilized females and an increase in the proportion of sterilized males.... On the whole, the number of sterilized couples in their thirties has slightly decreased.... The most recent data seem to indicate that this evolution has come to a halt." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

[Description of a marital mobility model and its application to Quebec].

"The marital mobility model allows for the simultaneous study of the formation and break-up of couples in a given cohort. The model is equally suited for longitudinal and for period analysis. Its essential feature is the construction of a multiple status life table that deals either with initial status changes or with successive ones. Preliminary results obtained for Quebec indicate that, in recent generations, individuals marry less and divorce more; at the same time the prevalence of cohabitation and the number of births out of wedlock both continue to increase." [Geo-linguistic mobility of the Francophone population of Quebec and Ontario].

"The relation between geographic and linguistic mobility among the population of French mother tongue in Ontario and Quebec [Canada] is explored. The results show that language behaviour, in particular the use of English as home language, is fairly regularly and coherently related to spatial behaviour. A distinct positive correlation between geographic and linguistic mobility is observed. It would seem, furthermore, that the ability of various linguistic environments to impose the dominant language is notably stronger when the dominant language is English." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[The recent evolution of fertility in Quebec: demographic and socioeconomic determinants].

The purpose of this study is to assess the factors which have influenced the evolution of fertility in Quebec between 1960 and 1990, in order to have a better focus on short and middle term fertility's determining factors. A Whittaker-Henderson filter is applied to various variables presumably linked to the total fertility index in order to retrieve and isolate the trend, which then enables concentration on residuals' co-variations. A regression analysis then enables assessment of the factors' weights and the short term's influence (business cycle). Governmental incentives, notably between 1988 and 1990, appear as having contributed, as well as the overall economic conjuncture, to the observed total fertility index raise in the course of this period.

Categorizing patients with occupational low back pain by use of the Quebec Task Force Classification system versus pain pattern classification procedures: discriminant and predictive validity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Quebec Task Force Classification (QTFC) and pain pattern classification (PPC) procedures, including centralization and noncentralization, are common classification procedures. Classification was done to estimate validity of data obtained with QTFC and PPC procedures for differentiating patient subgroups at intake and for use in predicting rehabilitation outcomes at discharge and work status at 1 year after discharge from rehabilitation. SUBJECTS: Patients (n=171, 54% male; mean age=37 years, SD=10, range=18-62) with acute work-related low back pain referred for physical therapy were analyzed. METHODS: Patients completed pain and psychosocial questionnaires at initial examination and discharge and pain diagrams throughout intervention. Physical therapists classified patients using QTFC and PPC data at intake. Patients were classified again at discharge by PPC (time-dependent PPC). RESULTS: Analysis of variance of showed QTFC and PPC data could be used to differentiate patients by pain intensity or disability at intake. Analysis of covariance showed that intake PPC predicted pain intensity and disability at discharge, but QTFC did not. Logistic regression showed that PPC predicted work status at 1 year, but QTFC did not. Classifying patients over time using time-dependent PPC data reduced the false positive rate by 31% and increased percentage of change in pretest-posttest probability of return to work by 16% compared with classifying patients at intake. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Results support the discriminant validity of the QTFC data at intake and predictive validity of the PPC data at intake. Tracking PPC over time increases predictive validity for 1-year work status.

[Five cases of neonaticide in Quebec].

A neonaticide is the homicide of an infant that occurs during the first 24 hours after birth. This homicide is almost exclusively done by the mother. According to previous data, the parent who commits such homicide is a single woman, who usually conceals her pregnancy and delivers secretly either at home or in the workplace and panics at this very moment. Five vignettes are selected from the files of the Quebec Coroner. The cases are presented in order to verify if these women represent a homogeneous group, as research of the last thirty years has demonstrated. According to data for the period between 1986 and 1994, the deceased newborns are boys, and the teenage mothers have personalities that are characterized by immaturity. In this group, denial of pregnancy is a temporary state that may vary in depth among individuals. Moreover, they did not want to be pregnant. One older group of women experience separation anxiety at the time of commiting the neonaticide. Clinical and theoretical implications are discussed in link with these two sub-groups.

[Notes on a definition for alternatives practices and therapies in Quebec.].

The phenomenon of non-traditional therapies is firstly analyzed within the context of an increasing number of approaches in the therapeutic field in Quebec and the Western hemisphere and of the development of health care alternatives. The growth and diversity of alternative therapies legitimizes the need to establish an operational definition of this phenomenon, which is the framework of this article.

Health promotion activities in Quebec hospitals: a comparison of DSC and non-DSC hospitals.

In the early 1970s, public health units were introduced to 32 Quebec hospitals. One of the reasons for introducing public health to hospitals was the beneficial influence this new structure, called "Département de santé communautaire" (DSC), was expected to have on the development of health promotion and prevention activities in the hospital. This study compared 19 DSC hospitals with 19 non-DSC hospitals that were matched for mission, size and location. The data came from a larger survey which had been conducted by the Canadian Hospital Association in Canadian hospitals in 1985. According to our results, DSC hospitals differed from their non-DSC counterparts mainly on dimensions related to their public health mandate (e.g. community programs, advocacy). They did not differ greatly on dimensions related to other health promotion and prevention activities within the hospital (e.g. inpatient and outpatient care, employees). These results suggest that while hospitals have not created organizational obstacles to the achievement of public health activities by DSCs, DSCs did not have the expected impact on hospitals.

[Dermatophilus congolensis infection in a dairy cow in Quebec (author's transl)].

Dermatophilus congolensis infection in a dairy cow in QuebecA case of infection by Dermatophilus congonlensis is described for the first time in the Province of Quebec, in a dairy cow. Dermatophilosis was diagnosed in the area of Saint-Hyacinthe in October 1978. It was not possible to find the source of the infection. The isolation of the microorganism was successful and the three techniques used are described. The death of the animal was attributed to complications following invasion by a secondary pathogen. All the other animals in the herd were free from clinical signs of infection. Moreover, no other case of infection by D. congolensis was found in other animal species or humans in the area.

[Intestinal bilharziasis in Quebec tourists: parasitologic and diagnostic aspects].

Intestinal bilharziasis (or schistosomiasis) is becoming more and more frequent among Canadian travellers who come in contact with natural soft waters in tropical countries. The clinical signs accompanying contamination, the prodrome and the chronic phase are inconstant, but eosinophilia is often the warning sign, and specific seroparasitologic findings suggest the diagnostic investigation, Five tourists from Quebec became infected while travelling in Martinique. The clinical, parasitologic and serologic features that led to the diagnosis are described. The prodome (a flu-like syndrome with eosinophilia) is underlined. Treatment with niridazole was effective, as confirmed by the absence of Schistosoma mansoni eggs (or the presence of dead eggs) in specimens from rectal biopsies performed subsequently.

Serological survey of leptospiral antibodies in swine in Quebec.

The prevalence of reactors to different serovars of Leptospira interrogans was determined in 117 swine premises in Quebec. A total of 926 sera were tested, using the microscopic agglutination method, against six leptospiral serovars: pomona, icterohaemorrhagiae, grippotyphosa, hardjo, canicola and ballum. Of the sera tested, 30 (3.2%) reacted to one of the three following serovars: pomona (2%), icterohaemorrhagiae (1.1%) and ballum (0.1%).

Experimental infection of calves with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (Quebec strain).

An experiment was designed to evaluate the clinical, haematological, viral and serological aspects of bovine respiratory syncytial virus infection in calves. Eleven calves were inoculated intranasally with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (Quebec strain) in aerosol. Clinical, haemotological and serological responses of the calves and virus shedding were monitored. The experimentally infected animals manifested moderate to severe signs of respiratory disease. The parameters used to evaluate the severity of the disease included ocular discharge, conjunctivitis, lung sounds, nasal discharge, pyrexia and leukopenia. The animals were scored accordingly (scale infected 70.8-148.5, control 22-29.3). Highest disease scores were observed between day 6-9 after infection. Virological and serological assessment demonstrated that the observed clinical picture was due to bovine respiratory syncytial virus infection.

6p24-22 region and major psychoses in the Eastern Quebec population. Le Groupe IREP.

Recent reports of a linkage trend in 6p24-22 for schizophrenia (SZ), in different samples, were tempered by the concurrent evidence of negative reports in other samples. In the studies showing positive results, different definitions of affection and a wide spectrum of diagnoses were used. Our objectives were not only to test for linkage at 6p24-22 in the Eastern Quebec population, but also to test whether this putative vulnerability locus was either selectively linked to schizophrenia (SZ), or to bipolar disorder (BP), or to both major psychoses. Parametric and nonparametric linkage analyses with 12 microsatellite markers in 6p24-p22 were performed on a sample of 18 large multigenerational pedigrees (N = 354) either affected by SZ, or by BP, or equally affected by both major psychoses (i.e., mixed pedigrees). Three affection definitions were usually tested in our program: one on schizophrenia (SZ), one on bipolar disorder (BP), and one that comprised SZ and BP under the hypothesis of a susceptibility locus common to both in major psychoses (common locus, CL). The results of parametric analyses did not support a major gene hypothesis. However, in one large mixed pedigree (#151), we observed with the common locus phenotype (CL) lod scores of 2.49 and 2.15, respectively, at the D6S296 and D6S277 loci under a dominant model. Our data suggest the presence of a potential vulnerability locus at 6p24-22 that could be related to both schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. These results may be seen as congruent with former studies that used schizoaffective as well as schizophrenia diagnoses as entry criteria for the affected families, and used an affection definition that comprised affective psychoses as well as schizophrenia.
