The antibacterial interaction of methenamine hippurate (MH) and trimethoprim (TMP) was tested in vitro in 3 different media: urine, brain-heart broth and Mueller-Hinton broth. MH and TMP were found to have a synergistic interaction in chequer-board titration against 11/11 bacteria in urine. Low concentrations of MH (1/2 MIC) had an additive or synergistic effect with TMP against 14/14 bacteria in brain-heart broth and 20/26 bacteria in Mueller-Hinton broth. In addition, the growth of bacteria in urine from healthy subjects treated with TMP (200 mg), MH (1000 mg) or a combination of TMP + MH (200 + 1000 mg) twice a day for 5 days was compared. A synergistic or additive effect of TMP and MH was found against 14/16 strains. Antagonistic interaction was not found in any of the tests. Preliminary pharmacokinetic studies with TMP and MH showed no marked interaction between the drugs. The hydrolysis of MH to formaldehyde was inversely related to urinary pH, and at pH 5 most of the formaldehyde released from MH in urine was generated within 3 h. The results suggest that the combination of TMP and MH may be more efficient than TMP alone in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
Thirteen infants with compartmentalization of the lateral ventricles diagnosed by air encephalography, computerized tomography, or autopsy are reported. In each case, the body of one or both lateral ventricles was completely divided by a membrane posterior to the foramen of Monro. Recognition of this entity is important from both therapeutic and prognostic standpoints.

Sensitivity of bacterial strains causing urinary tract infections was analysed. High sensitivity of bacteria to nitrofurantoin, guinolones and cephalosporines--mainly of the III generation, as well as minute sensitivity to penicillins were demonstrated.
Ninety patients with urinary tract infections were treated in a randomized double-blind study with either a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) or sulfamethoxazole alone (SMX). Thirty of 42 patients treated with TMP-SMX were cured by the time of follow-up compared with 26 of 48 treated with SMX alone. Of the 29 patients infected with SMX-resistent organisms, the combination TMP-SMX cured 12 of 17, whereas SMX alone cured 2 of 12. Of the 61 patients infected with SMX-sensitive organisms, TMP-SMX cured 18 of 25; SMX alone cured 24 of 36. In 50 women the infection was found localized to The upper urinary tract by the use of the Fairley bladder washout technique. TMPsmx cured 16 or 24 of these patients with proved upper tract infections and SMX alone cured 11 of 26. Although none of these differences were significant, TMP-SMX appears to be an effective drug combination for the therapy of proved upper tract infection and is also effective in eradicating sulfonamide-resistant organisms.

The effects of prophylactic tinidazole on the vaginal carrier state of anaerobic bacteria and the development of postoperative infections were studied in 50 patients undergoing gynaecological surgery. The results are based on a double-blind trial, using tinidazole (Fasigyn; Pfizer) and placebo. Although no postoperative infections other than urinary tract infections were observed in our series, this study shows conclusively that the isolation of anerobic bacteria from the vagina decreased markedly in the tinidazole group compared with the placebo group.
