Marriage and labor market discrimination in Japan.

"Many Japanese firms have engaged in the practice of compulsory retirement upon a female employee's marriage. In 1966, this practice was ruled as being contrary to provisions in Japan's Civil Code. [The authors] have specified and estimated a model of the economic determinants of age at marriage in order to analyze the effect that this discrimination has had on nuptiality in Japan. [The] results indicate that on average, after accounting for an upward trend, women who married after the 1966 court decision married about one year younger than women who married before 1966." It is also found that age at marriage is influenced by several socioeconomic variables, including wife's wage and educational level, husband's income and educational level, and wife's family background. Data are from a 1975 survey of women aged 20-59 who were living in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Human reproduction in Bangladesh: a microanalytic simulation model.

"This paper presents a microanalytic stochastic model of human reproduction with special features for use in examining reproduction in high mortality populations. The model builds on prior work by including (a) a beta distribution for fecundability, permitting variations between women and during a woman's childbearing years, (b) fetal deaths and stillbirths that vary with a woman's age, and (c) sterility that varies as a function of two random probability distributions. New to this model is inclusion of a Weibull survival function for infant and child mortality and a model schedule of postpartum amenorrhoea that depends on the length of breastfeeding." Consideration is given to the interaction of breast-feeding and early mortality and their effects on human reproduction. "Input parameters are selected for the population of Bangladesh, and initial results from a Monte Carlo simulation, in which age at marriage varies, are given."

Marriage, divorce, and remarriage from retrospective data: a multiregional approach.

"In this paper the author applies the framework of multiregional population analysis to marital status changes as revealed by longitudinal retrospective data on marital histories collected as part of the June 1975 [U.S.] Current Population Survey supplement. Four marital statuses are used: never married, presently married, divorced, and widowed. Marital status life tables are computed for three periods: 1960-1965, 1965-1970, and 1970-1975, and, for each period, differences between males and females and between whites and blacks are described." Consideration is given to "the proportion of a life-table cohort ever marrying, the mean age at first marriage, the number of marriages per person marrying, the proportion of marriages ending in divorce, the average duration of a marriage (or a divorce, or a widowhood), and the like."
