[Progress on polydactyly character of vertebrate].

Polydactyly is a common abnormal limb phenotype in vertebrate and there is similar limb phenotype among different species. Research shows that polydactyly has a similar development mechanism, and this kind of polydactyly character seems to be controlled by homologous genes among species. The latest research results on human and mouse further shows that PPD should be caused by the disruption of a long range cis-acting regulator for Shh within Lmbr1 intron. Here the development mechanism and related genes controlling polydactyly character of vertebrate are reviewed.

[A gas chromatographic study on the characters of adsorbents in the enrichment of organic compounds from air samples].

A gas chromatographic method for the measurement of enriching characters of adsorbents used in preconcentration of organic compounds from air samples was studied. The character parameters suggested in this study include adsorption parameters (breakthrough volume or maximum sample volume) and desorption ones (minimum flashing volume and the lowest desorption temperature). The parameters of some low-molecular-mass compounds such as alcohols, saturated hydrocarbons, aromatics, esters and halohydrocarbons on GDX-301 were measured by using elution GC method. The maximum sample volumes of all the 20 compounds (with exception of methanol) got from these experiments are not less than 0.8 L at 35 degrees C for sampling tube (filled with 2 g GDX-301) and 0.3 L at 0 degrees C for focus tube (with 0.14 g GDX-301). The corresponding minimum flashing volumes of less than 177 mL and 13 mL respectively are needed to complete desorption at 180 degrees C, and the lowest desorption temperatures of not over 180 degrees C and 157 degrees C at flashing volume of 180 mL and 30 mL are lower than the maximum allowable operating temperature (250 degrees C) of GDX-301. The results showed that GDX-301 is a good adsorbent for enrichment of the organic compounds mentioned above. The following operating conditions are recommended: using the above sampling tube and focus tube, actual sample volume < or = 0.8 L, adsorption temperature < or = 35 degrees C and focus temperature 0 degrees C, desorption for 6 min from sampling tube and 1 min from focus tube at 180 degrees C with flashing rate 30 mL/min. Good correlations between the parameters and boiling point of the investigated compounds were found. It can be used to estimate the parameters of other organic compounds not measured in this study.

[Comparison of various characters and antigenic structure in S. aureus strains cultivated in hospitalized patients and in healthy carriers].

A comparison has been done between various characters of 170 non epidemic strains cultivated from hospitalized patients and 29 strains originated from healthy carriers without any hospital contact and antibiotic treatment since 6 months. Following characters have been tested: M.I.C. of 13 antibiotics, heterogenous methicillin resistance, enzymatic antibiotic resistance, macrolide inducible or constitutive type resistance, mercuric chloride susceptibility; phage types; enzymes and toxins production. Antigenic structure has been studied, in particular production of protein A, A beta teichoc acid and type antigens. Significant differences have been observed between hospital and healthy carriers strains; these later strains are antibiotic susceptible, produce few toxins and enzymes, are not frequently phage typable. Their antigenic structure shows also significant differences: A beta-teichoic acid is less frequently detected; type antigens are less frequent and different. Role of these surface antigens in virulence is discussed.

[Visible spectral character of heme iron in biomacromolecules].

The visible spectra of hemin, hemoglobin, cytochrome C, peroxidase and so on were compared and analyzed based on the experiments. The fifth and sixth coordinate bond of heme iron in biomacromolecule may affect their visible spectra in peak form and position. The sixth coordinate bond of ferrous heme iron that is in low-spin displays two peaks, and in high-spin, ferrous heme without the sixth coordinate bond of iron gives only one peak. That is in favor of our understanding of the character, function and stability of heme-containing biomacromolecule. The spectral character of iron coordinate bonds is due to that these coordinate bonds change the iron position related to porphyrin plane and its spin state.

[Evaluation by perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance to hemodynamic character and surgical effect of carotid system stenoses or occlusion].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hemodynamic character and surgical effect of stenoses or occlusion of carotid artery system by perfusion-weighted MRI. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with stenoses or occlusion of carotid artery system underwent surgical treatment. Two patients underwent endarterectomy, extracranial-intracranial arterial bypass to 10 patients, and percutaneous stent angioplasty to 9 patients. RESULTS: Preoperative perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) revealed normal regional cerebral blood flow in all patients, with delayed time to peak in both middle cerebral artery distribution and border zone. Postoperative perfusion-weighted MR revealed normal time to peak in border zone, but abnormal in middle cerebral artery distribution. Evaluated by perfusion-weighted MR, it showed that surgical method can improve the hemodynamic disorder of this kind of disease. The early curative effect of endarterectomy and percutaneous stent angioplasty is better than extracranial-intracranial arterial bypass. CONCLUSIONS: Perfusion-weighted MR is a good method to evaluate hemodynamic character of stenoses or occlusion of carotid artery system. Surgical method is helpful to this kind of disease, and its curative effect can be evaluated impersonally and accurately by this new technique.

[Temperament and character of Polish women with anorexia and bulimia nervosa].

AIM: One of the factors influencing eating disorders are personality traits. The authors analyse temperament and character of healthy women. METHOD: The Cloninger Temperament and character Inventory was applied to 52 eating disordered patients (33 with anorexia nervosa and 19 with bulimia nervosa). The patients were divided into subgroups of restrictive type and bulimic types of anorexia, bulimia and bulimic episodes. RESULTS: In all the subgroups of the patients a higher result was obtained on the harm avoidance scale (HA), cooperativeness (C) and the self transcendence ST2 subscale. Lower results were seen in self-directedness (SD) in the SD2, SD3 and SD5 subscales. The subgroups differed in temperament. Bulimia patients noted a higher need for NS stimulation and a higher reward dependence (RD). Anorectic patients had higher results in the persistance scale (P), whilst the restrictive anorectic patients had lower results in the NS1 and RD3 subscales. CONCLUSIONS: The TCI Inventory is a useful tool, helping for a precise measurement of the difference in temperament of anorectic and bulimia patients as compared to their healthy peers.

[High temperature Raman spectra and structure character study of BSO crystal].

The structure character of BSO crystal at room temperature was generalized. The main Raman shifts of lattice vibration at room temperature were interpreted. The Raman spectra of BSO crystal were measured in a temperature range from 293 K to 1123 K with high temperature Raman spectroscopy and time-resolved detection techniques. Temperature-dependence character of the Raman spectra of the crystal was investigated. The vibration mode of the longest bond Bi-O(1) in crystal shifts from 542 cm(-1) to 512 cm(-1) with the temperature increasing from room temperature to 1123 K. It can be attributed to the fact that oxygen atoms are electrostatic bond to Bi atoms. The intensity of 88 cm(-1) modes, which belongs to combination mode of bending and stretching in Bi3O4 unit, changes not so noticeably as other modes, and even the 58 cm(-1) mode of Bi atoms motions in crystal lattice decreases rapidly when the temperature is higher than 873 K, which indicates that the framework structure of the crystal is broken down at high temperature, while the Bi3O4 unit still exists.

[Recent rhinos do not lack character(s): neither do fossil rhinos!].

Concepts, methods, and interest of phylogenetic reconstruction are briefly examined. As large data sets are considered and refutable results are proposed, there is no need to use the argument of authority concerning relationships between taxons. Cladistic analysis in vertebrate palaeontology has gained considerable strength in the last decade, based on sets of hundreds of anatomical characters. One example is selected, which concerns the rhino family, i.e. rhinocerotids. Although underrepresented in recent times, these perissodactyl mammals flourished throughout the Cenozoicera (4 recent genera vs. 50 fossil genera). The main results of a recent cladistic analysis of elasmotheriine rhinocerotids, based on 282 anatomical characters, are listed. Such results concern phylogenetics (monophyly of both elasmotheriines and recent rhinos; branching of elasmotheriines among rhinocerotids) and methodology (definition of a "branching group"; location and processing of homoplasy; influence of taxonomic sampling). The implications are both biostratigraphical and palaeobiogeographical (evolution of the diet and spatial distribution; intercontinental dispersals; ghost lineages and heuristic use of the phylogenetic tree). Finally, forthcoming developments of the available data set for rhinocerotids are examined: controversial phylogenetic relationships among recent rhinos will be refined (thanks to close extinct taxa) and an exhaustive phylogeny of fossil and recent rhinocerotids will be reconstructed (54 genera).

[Studies on the cytological characters of the interspecific hybrid F1 among the cultivated species in Gossypium and their genetic relationship].

Interspescific hybridization among four cultivated species in Gossypium (G. herbaceum, G. arboreum, G. hirsutum and G. barbadense) were carried out to produce dispecific hybrids F1, (G. arboreum x G. herbaceum) F1 and (G. hirsutum x G. barbadense) F1, and quadrispecific hybrid F1, which was produced by crossed the chromosome doubled (G. arboreum x G. herbaceum) F1 with (G. hirsutum x G. barbadense) F1. In order to study the evolution relationship among the four cultivated species in Gossypium, the characteristic of chromosome behavior during the meiosis and pollen viability in those interspecific hybrids F1 were studied in this paper. The results showed that the diploid interspecific hybrid, (G. arboreum x G. herbaceum) F1, had a four-chromosome-ring, the chromosome configuration was 2n = 26 = 11 II + 1 IV. And the normal pollen percent was 50.71%, which showed the character of typical gamete semi-sterility, and approved that there was a chromosome translocation between the two diploid cotton species, G. arboreum and G. herbaceum. For the allotetraploid species interspecific hybrid F1, (G. hirsutum x G. barbadense) F1, most of the chromosomes at metaphase I could be paired into bivalents, with a few number of univalents, trivalents, and quardrivalents. The chromosome configuration was 2n = 52 = 0.78 I +22.24 II +0.94 III +0.98 IV, with a normal pollen rate of 54. 84%. The experiment showed that there were a few chromosome translocation or chromosome inversion between the two allotetraploid cotton species, G. hirsutum and G. barbadenses. The meiosis of the quardrispecific hybrid F1 was abnormal, and the loss of chromosomes was common. Most of the chromosomes could not synapse at metaphase I, which led to many univalents and some multivalents. The chromosome configuration of the quardrispecific hybrid F1 was 2n = 52 = 5.45 I +14.41 II +2.44 III +1.59 IV +0.63 V +0.15 VI, and the normal pollen rate was 6.87%, which showed that the relationship of four cultivated cotton species was relatively closed. It is possible to produce a new germplasm with the good characters of the four cultivated species through genetic recombination.

[Physical and chemical characters of recombinant human nucleoside diphosphate kinase A].

To purify recombinant human nucleoside diphosphate kinase A (rhNDPK-A) and determine its physical and chemical characters, recombinant NDPK-A producing E. coli was cultured in 80L fermentor under high cell density culture (HCDC) conditions. The harvested cells were treated with high pressure to break the cell up, tangential-flow microfiltration to remove the bacteria debris and ultrafiltration to concentrate the filtered solution containing target protein. The crude NDPK-A was purified by ion exchange chromatography with DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow, affinity chromatography with Cibarcron Blue 3GA Sepharose CL-4B and gel filtration with Sephadex G-100. The purity of rhNDPK-A was analyzed with SDS-PAGE and RP-HPLC. The Enzymatic activity was determined with RP-HPLC. The molecular weight (MW) was measured with matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight MS (MALDI-TOF MS). The N-terminal residue was sequenced with Edman method. The apparent molecular weight of rhNDPK-A in solution was determined with multiangle laser light-scattering method (MALS). It was found that the purity of rhNDPK-A was 97.3% with SDS-PAGE method and 99.2% with RP-HPLC method. The specific enzymatic activity was (900 +/- 100) u/mg. The molecular weight was 17017, which was 132 less than the calculated value according to the amino acid sequence of NDPK-A. The sequencing result of rhNDPK-A revealed that its N-terminal residue was Ala, which was the second residue on N-terminal of native NDPK-A. The calculated MW of N-terminal deleted rhNDPK-A was 17017, exactly equal to the experimental value. The result of apparent MW determination revealed that rhNDPK-A formed homohexamer in solution with a MW of 102kD. These results suggested that rhNDPK-A possessed character identical to its native counterpart of assembling into hexamer. Confirming the identity of rhNDPK-A to its native counterpart provided a good foundation for drug development and mechanism study of NDPK-A.

[Preliminary observation of biological characters of chondrocytes in articular loose body].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the biological characters of chondrocytes in articular loose body and to find out seeding cells for cartilage tissue engineering. METHODS: Samples from 5 loose body cartilages, 2 normal articular cartilages and 6 osteoarthritis articular cartilages were collected. Part of each sample's cartilage was histologically studied to observe the chondrocytes distribution the morphologic changes by toluidine-blue staining, chondrocytes' apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL). The rest of each cartilage was digested and isolated by 0.25% trypsin and 0. 2% collagenase II, and then were cultivated in 10%DMEM. Their morphologic changes were observed 24h later. Comparison was made between three cartilages. RESULTS: Compared with normal cartilage and osteoarthritis articular cartilage, the cells density was higher, their lacunary were larger, cells distribution was irregular, and apoptosis was more apparent in loose body cartilage. CONCLUSION: The characters of chondrocytes from loose body is more like fibroblasts so they can not serve as seeding cells directly for cartilage tissue engineering.

[Genetic control of the wavy shoots character in radish Raphanus sativus L].

The results of genetic analysis of the wavy shoots character supported the hypothesis on the existence of two genes, Wsh1 and Wsh2, whose mutations caused wavy shoots in radish lines 16 and 26, respectively. As shown by analysis of joint inheritance with marker characters, wavy shoots were inherited independently of the biochemical markers (genes Lap1, Ep, Dia1, and Aat). Gene Wsh1 was shown to be linked to genes A, ac, and ar; the mode of inheritance depended on the cross combination. In hybrids with mutant line 16, plants with novel morphological defects, which were absent in the parental forms, were detected. Possible mechanisms of new morphological abnormalities and change of linkage in the combinations analyzed are discussed.

[Spatial variance characters of urban synthesis pattern indices at different scales].

Scale holds the key to understand pattern-process interactions, and indeed, becomes one of the corner-stone concepts in landscape ecology. Geographic Information System and remote sensing techniques provide an effective tool to characterize the spatial pattern and spatial heterogeneity at different scales. As an example, these techniques are applied to analyze the urban landscape diversity index, contagion index and fractal dimension on the SPOT remote sensing images at four scales. This paper modeled the semivariogram of these three landscape indices at different scales, and the results indicated that the spatial variance characters of diversity index, contagion index and fractal dimension were similar at different scales, which was spatial dependence. The spatial dependence was showed at each scale, the smaller the scale, the stronger the spatial dependence. With the scale reduced, more details of spatial variance were discovered. The contribution of spatial autocorrelation of these three indices to total spatial variance increased gradually, but when the scale was quite small, spatial variance analysis would destroy the interior structure of landscape system. The semivariogram models of different landscape indices were very different at the same scale, illuminating that these models were incomparable at different scales. According to above analyses and based on the study of urban land use structure, 1 km extent was the more perfect scale for studying the spatial variance of urban landscape pattern in Shanghai. The spatial variance of landscape indices had the character of scale-dependence, and was a function of scale. The results differed at different scales we chose, and thus, the influence of scales on pattern could not be neglected in the research of landscape ecology. The changes of these three landscape indices displayed the regularity of urban spatial structure at different scales, i. e., they were complicated and no regularity at small scale, polycentric at moderate scale, and circle-zoning at big scale.

[Inheritance of the white-flower and its influence to related characters in eggplant (Solanum melongem Linn)].

The inheritance of the white-flower and its influence to related characters in eggplant were studied with the white-flowered mutant of XIANLVQIE and its maternal bred. Result showed that the flower color was attributed to a couple of complete dominance genes. Purple color flower "Col" was dominant to the white "col". Compared with the purple-flowered strain, the white-flowered strain not only grew more blooming, but also had more stamens in one flower, less pollens in one anther and less seeds in one fruit. In the meanwhile, in white-flowered eggplants, microspore and fruit was bigger, and yield was higher than purple-flowered. The white-flowered strain could be used as a variety and the white-flowered character could be used as a marker to appraise purity of hybrid in eggplant.

[Investigation of intranasal bacteriological character and pH value in patients with chronic rhinitis treated by Budesonide aqueous nasal spray].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the bacteriological character and pH value in nasal cavity and observe the efficacy following 8 week treatment with Budesonide aqueous nasal spray in chronic nonallergic rhinitis. METHODS: Forty-two patients with chronic nonallergic rhinitis were treated with Budesonide aqueous nasal spray (256 microg once daily intranasal) for 8 weeks. Bacteriological character was measured before and 8 weeks after treatment All the swab specimens were obtained from the inferior meatus, bacteriologic outcome was determined by general cultures. Nasal pH value was measured by using a probe sited under the inferior turbinate before and after treatment. Efficacy was evaluated by measurement of nasal symptom scores and sign scores before and 8 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: The bacterial growth was present in 37 of 42 cases (88%) before the treatment (group 1), including 53 aerobic bacteria. The bacterial growth was present in 38 of 42 cases (90.47%) 8 weeks after treatment (group 2), including 46 aerobic bacteria. There was no significant difference in the bacterial distribution between group 1 and group 2 (chi2 = 0.416, P > 0.05). Budesonide aqueous nasal spray reduced pH value from 7.90 +/- 0.39 to 7.70 +/- 0.23 (t = 2.72, P < 0.05). All the parameters of symptoms were improved after treatment, including nasal obstruction, nasal secretions, itchy feeling of the nose, closed rhinolalia and headache. CONCLUSIONS: Glucocorticoid aqueous nasal spray could be used safely for eight weeks and does not increase the risk of aerobes and fungi infection and reduce the pH in chronic nonallergic rhinitis. It is effective in relieving symptoms of patients with chronic nonallergic rhinitis.

[Characters of the surface of the cast-bonded keeper: an experimental study].

PURPOSE: This study is aimed to analyze the characters of the surface of the keeper after cast-bonded in varied temperatures. METHODS: Twelve keepers were divided into three groups: the gold alloy group, the Ni-Cr alloy group and the Ti group with four samples in each group. A sample that contained a Magdisc 500 keeper was fabricated with the cast-bonded technique. Then, the surface of the sample was observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) and its elements were analyzed with the electron probe. RESULTS: The results showed that there was no oxide film on the surface of the keeper in the gold alloy group and the Ni-Cr alloy group, but there was an oxide film on the surface of the keeper in the Ti group. However, remains of the investment materials were found on the surface of the sample of three groups. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggested that the casting temperature affect the characters of the surface of the cast-bonded keeper. Gold alloy or Ni-Cr alloy is of better properties for clinical use.
