Using population census data for the years 1947-1971, the author analyzes the relationship between changes in urban density and population growth in three major coastal urban centers in Queensland, Australia. "Changes in density patterns over time are examined in terms of the empirical exponential density gradient models which emphasise the significance of the distance from the CBD (Central Business District), and a projection of residential population in the centres is made for the year 1990."

The importance of treating urban populations as heterogeneous when making national population forecasts is the main theme of this paper. "It hypothesizes that large metropolitan areas exhibit specific patterns of migration, age composition, and fertility when compared with urban areas as a whole. In particular, such areas are characterized by relatively low levels of reproduction." The impact of the urbanization process on demographic change at the national level is emphasized. The authors examine the demographic structure of large metropolitan areas in highly urbanized countries and present comparisons with the structure of the total urban population. They then focus on the case of a developing country, the Republic of Korea, for which alternative patterns of urban development are considered. Issues concerning policies of urbanization and population redistribution are also discussed. Comments by T. R. Lakshmanan (pp. 39-41) and Ahmed Seifelnasr (pp. 42-3) are also included.
"This article argues for the adoption of a co-ordinated urban planning policy in the Republic of Ireland where towns now accommodate 64% of the total population. A review of trends in town population change for the years 1986-91 suggests that the ad hoc approach to planning urban employment and service provision that exists currently is inadequate to prevent major disparities in population distribution becoming exacerbated between large and small settlements and between regions within the state. These disparities are the result in part of fundamental economic restructuring which is related to international trends but they also reflect the gradual withdrawal by the Irish Government from regional planning from the mid-1980s on. By way of introduction to the discussion of the empirical evidence, an earlier phase of Irish urban and employment planning is reviewed briefly."
