[Real problems of conducting social-hygienic monitoring on railroads].

Sociohygienic monitoring on the railway transport, which is a branch part of the state sociohygienic monitoring system, includes observation, analysis, assessment, and prediction of the health status and habitat of railway workers and population to be served, as well as the establishment of associations of the health status with environmental factors. Standard legal, scientific-and-methodological, and organizational bases have been set up for branch monitoring. The basic parameters and the procedure for interaction of branch and territorial entities have been defined.

Larval habitat of Armigeres subalbatus (COQ) and its characteristics in Pondicherry.

Larval habitats of Armigeres subalbatus were delineated in urban and rural areas of Pondicherry. Survey of various potential mosquito breeding habitats revealed that septic tanks were the typical breeding habitat in both areas and the proportion was significantly higher in urban areas. The productive status of septic tanks differed in different months and the overall proportion breeding Ar. subalbatus was significantly higher in urban areas (0.0447) compared to rural areas (0.0181). Sporadic breeding observed in receptacles holding water admixed with cow-dung, was however insignificant. Among the various physico-chemical factors of septic tank habitat analysed in relation to breeding, only ammonia nitrogen was found to be significantly correlated with immature density.

[Industrial hygiene problems in reclamation constriction operations].

Workers engaged in reclamation construction are exposed to dust and chemical agents, appearing in the air during the work. Vibration, noise, meteorologic conditions overmatch the normal parameters. Immunologic status is changed, transitory disablement incidence is high, occupational diseases occur. Hygienic measures for this population are recommended and put into practice.

[Outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in a private apartment building].

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of legionnaires disease occurred in Zaragoza (Spain) in an uncommon environment such as a private apartment building was studied. METHODS: The investigation began upon notification of 3 patients admitted with pneumonia, living in the same apartment building. The suggestion of a common source of infection led to an active search for cases and a micro-environmental study of the zone where the patients lived, as well as a follow up study of other cases with hospital acquired pneumonia throughout the city. RESULTS: Six cases were detected over 9 days with a rate of 1.54%. The evolution of all the cases was favorable. The causal agent was serologically identified as Legionella pneumophilia serogroup 1 which was also found in the shower of one of the patient's bath with further confirmation that the strain isolated belonged to the Pontiac subgroup. CONCLUSIONS: The probable source of infection was the potable water. The stagnation, low temperature of the boiler and the under-chlorination of the water are factors which may have contributed to the appearance of this outbreak. The control of this type of outbreak must be based on a specific information system which treats this disease as requiring individualized declaration.

Evaluation of drinking water quality in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.

To evaluate the quality of drinking water in and around Tiruchirappalli City, twenty spots were identified within a radius of about 20 km. In all places ground water is used for drinking and domestic purposes. Nearly twenty physicochemical parameters were studied and the results have been presented. All the water bodies are found to contain high level of inorganic salts and total hardness with high electrical conductance. Since they are unsuitable for drinking purposes, method to improve the water quality has been suggested.
