Morphoproteomics is defined as the identification by immunohistochemistry of the molecular circuitry of various proteins in a tumor by noting their state of activation (translocation and phosphorylation) and correlative expressions. Such an approach can uncover or confirm potential molecular targets that may be essential to the growth, integrity, and histogenesis of a particular tumor type and that are amenable to specific therapeutic interventions. This communication illustrates the application of such an approach in depicting the mTOR pathway in mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.

The aim of the study was to assess the basic indicators of health of adolescents in Georgia. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire was adapted from the Swiss Survey (SMASH2002), translated into Georgian and other languages mainly used in schools (Russian, Armenian and Azeri). It contained 87 questions. Two-stage cluster sampling was devised. Weight was adjusted. A total of 599 classes were selected. All questionnaires before being processed into the Epidata (www.epidata.dk) were edited. The final data were analysed by SPSS 11.0. General health status was considered as excellent and very good by 34.0+/-0.8% of respondents. 21.5% claimed to never miss the school due to the illness. The frequencies of physical disability and chronic diseases were 8.0% and 5.0% correspondingly. Among health-related problems the most frequent are problems with teeth, headache and acne. 5.9% of girls had some kind of gynecological problems quite often and very often. Performed survey is a first one done among adolescents in Georgia. It gave us basic information for planning and implementation of necessary measures in order to improve the health of adolescents and raise awareness of professionals involved in health care and prevention settings for adolescents. The data can be also used for monitoring of health status of adolescents in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses carry out essential functions in the area of immunization in Québec and their role has broadened considerably since January 2003, following legislative modifications. However, the training received may not always allow nurses to fill this role satisfactorily. This study seeks to document the training in immunization offered to Québec nurses in the workplace. METHOD: A questionnaire was mailed to the directors or heads of nursing care (DSI/RSI) in 477 health care establishments in Québec in March 2003. RESULTS: Health care establishments in Québec offer more training to nurses on the job (68%) than at the moment of hiring (43%). These percentages vary widely according to the type of establishment. More than 90% of the local community service centres (CLSC) that responded offer training to their nurses. The indications/contraindications of immunization products and emergencies related to vaccination represent the themes most frequently dealt with. Only 38% of respondents affirm that the nurses in their institution are "very favourable" to vaccination. DISCUSSION: Almost all Québec CLSCs, which is where most immunization activities are carried out, offer training in vaccination to their nurses. On the other hand, few hospital centres (CH) and long-term care establishments (CHSLD) do so. Further documentation should be carried out on the impact of less than optimal training on the promotion of immunization programs by nurses.

Pica is a eating disorder, of the eating behavior in childhood. It is defined as the persistent intake of non-nutritional substances for at least one month, in an inappropriate way from an evolutionary perspective, and provided that its practice is not culturally banned. Many animal species, including primates, have this behavior. Documented from antiquity, in most cases it has been considered a symptom of another related disorder rather than as independent condition. Its prevalence is unknown. It is mainly described in mentally disabled people, pregnant women, autism, mentally ill patients, children, and others. The ingestion of earth, ice, starch, ropes, wood, and other products has been observed, although some authors also include the obsessive and reiterative consumption of eatable substances. Geophagia is considered a cultural phenomenon, although sometimes may lead to disease, and an form of paleomedicine or paleonutrition. The etiology of pica is unknown and it has no markers. Sensitive, digestive, nutritional, psychological, and psychiatric factors have been implicated in its origin and maintenance. Although the morbimortality is unknown and difficult to study, we may highlight intoxications, parasitic diseases, and surgical abdomen with serious complications. Finally, as in other eating behavior disorders, the global management of this entity requires a coordinated intervention of different health care professionals.
