[Immediate prosthetic management of surgically treated maxillary lesions].

In accordance with a method previously published - in which undercut areas in the region of resection are utilized for retaining the denture - a modified method is presented permitting immediate prosthetical care for operated maxillary defects despite fresh wound surfaces and constrictio maxillarum.

Subtotal reconstruction of the orbit after destruction by benign tumour.

We present five cases of reconstruction of the orbital walls after destruction by tumours. Treatment is based upon wide exposure through a bicoronal scalp incision and immediate reconstruction with autogenous iliac bone grafts. we do not recommend using foreign materials for reconstructing the orbit.

Alloplastic augmentation of middle-third facial deformities.

In reconstruction of deformities of the middle third of the face, an advantage in the use of an alloplastic implant rather than tissue transplantation is that only one surgical procedure is needed. A more accurate fit and better esthetic results are obtained with custom-made implants of silicone rubber. Carved implants require less fabrication time and offer adequate results although they are not always shaped as accurately.

[Extra-oral implants: principal areas of implantation].

The success of extra-oral implants raises a certain number of technical and medical problems. Among these, the anatomy of the implant zone and bone quality are determining factors for osteointegration of the implants. We describe the principal zones of implantation detailing the risks involved in each area.

[Description and classification of extra-oral implants].

There is no universal extra-oral implant (EOI) that provides an answer to all clinical situations. We present briefly the two main categories of extra-oral implants currently available, endo-osseous implants and juxta-osseous implants, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each. We also discuss the new developments currently under experimentation in extra-oral implantology.
