Customized document validation to support a flexible XML-based knowledge management framework.

This paper describes a validation architecture used within Intermountain Health Care's Clinical Knowledge Repository (CKR). The architecture provides additional functionality that complements XML Schema validation, producing user-friendly error messages and enabling validation rules reuse. The validation architecture helps document authors to fix their own errors. As a result, less than 1% of all documents in the CKR are considered invalid.

Integration of HTML documents into an XML-based knowledge repository.

The Emergency Patient Instruction Generator (EPIG) is an electronic content compiler / viewer / editor developed by Intermountain Health Care. The content is vendor-licensed HTML patient discharge instructions. This work describes the process by which discharge instructions where converted from ASCII-encoded HTML to XML, then loaded to a database for use by EPIG.

Knowledge-based schedule formulation and maintenance under uncertainty.

This paper is concerned with the dual sequential problems of (1) determining an acceptable personnel schedule over a specified time period, and (2) adjusting that schedule during the course of its execution in reaction to daily changes in both demand and available personnel. The first problem is schedule formulation; the second sequential problem is schedule execution. A rule-based, hierarchical system has been developed for first modeling and then solving both the schedule formulation and the schedule execution problems as a two-phase dependent process. The system is applied to the scheduling and staffing of nurses. A double-blind evaluation was conducted, which ascertained the quality of the resultant schedules in terms of maintainability, coverage, and personal satisfaction. The evaluation indicates that for units on which personnel changes have occurred, the prototype appears to perform as well as human schedulers.

[The reaction of the heart to radiation. I. State of the knowledge based on animal experimental studies].

The aim of curative tumor therapy is healing without complications. Therefore the avoidance of undesirable side-effects in healthy tissue becomes more important to such a degree as the lifespan can be prolonged by therapy: In this review the experiences to cardiac reactions by ionizing radiations are represented from experiments on animals. The former conception of a marked radioresistance of the heart has to be revised to the hitherto presented investigations. Acute inflammatory reactions and late, often progressive alterations can develop in the heart like in other normal tissue. These late-effects especially are reflected at pericardium, myocardium and vessel system (microvessel system and coronaries) and not rarely cause functional injuries of the tissue. Actual investigations give special attention to pathogenesis of acute radioreaction. It is supposed that their explanation gives a better understanding for the process of independence and progress and with that a possibility for prophylactic or therapeutic measures.
