Consultation to administrators.

Mental health specialists can contribute to improvements in children's school experience when they work with administrators to incorporate up-to-date mental health knowledge into educational practice. Effective consultation is not simply a knowledge dissemination exercise. The impact of the consultant's input is determined by how responsive the consultation process is to the needs and assets of faculty, students, and the broader community.

Reengineering vital registration and statistics systems for the United States.

For more than a hundred years, the United States has operated a decentralized vital statistics system as an essential component of public health. Statistics based on births and deaths registered in the United States are a primary source of data used to track health status, to plan, implement, and evaluate health and social services, and to set health policy. The national vital statistics system provides nearly complete, continuous, and comparable federal, state, and local data. The system, however, is based on outmoded vital registration practices and structures, which raises concerns about data quality, timeliness, and the lack of real-time linkage capabilities. While many organizations are working together to address these issues and have made notable achievements, questions remain to be answered. Efforts to rejuvenate the nation's vital statistics system will need to expand dramatically to provide public health with a timely, high-quality, and flexible system to monitor vital health outcomes at the local, state, and national levels.

The role of modern matrons in infection control.

This article discusses the effect of the role of the modern matron on healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) and hospital cleanliness. The way the modern matron's role is developing is examined in relation to HCAI in a large acute NHS trust. As set out in Implementing the NHS Plan: Modern Matrons (Department of Health (DH) 2001), the role of modern matron includes a responsibility to lead clinical teams in the prevention of HCAI.

Evaluation of planning and implementation for an innovative health centre.

The South Calgary Health Centre, a new venture for the Calgary Health Region, was mandated to be an accessible, integrated, community-based health services facility. A comprehensive evaluation provided details on planning and implementation. Functional integration was a large focus of the planning and was operationalized as central admitting, shared charts, shared space and co-location of clinical services with no history of integration. Challenges are discussed and recommendations for future health centres developed.

Multisectoral responses to HIV/AIDS: applying research to policy and practice.

The KwaZulu-Natal Enhancing Care Initiative is a program developed by a consortium of members who represent 4 sectors: academia, government, nongovernmental and community-based organizations, and the business sector. The Initiative was formed to develop a plan for improved care and support for people with HIV/AIDS and who live in resource-constrained settings in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A needs analysis helped to determine the following priorities in prevention, treatment, care, and support: training, grant-seeking, prevention, and care and treatment, including provision of antiretroviral therapy. A partnership approach resulted in better access to a wider community of people, information, and resources, and facilitated rapid program implementation. Creative approaches promptly translated research into policy and practice.

Suicide prevention programs: issues of design, implementation, feasibility, and developmental appropriateness.

Emerging models of prevention focus on population-level risk reduction through enumerating antecedent conditions that are linked to subsequent expressions of disorder and dysfunction. The authors discuss the essential ingredients for successful prevention programs--comprehensiveness, fidelity, and intensity. The authors describe how to mount prevention programs to increase feasibility, access, and effectiveness. Suicide is an epidemic of low frequency in the general population and therefore does not receive appropriate attention in public health prevention campaigns. They argue for nesting suicide prevention programs within existing public health preventive intervention programs and provide some examples of how to reduce vulnerabilities and risk conditions for subsequent suicidal behaviors.
