(R)-Linalyl 6-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and bornyl 6-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside were isolated as aroma precursors of linalool and borneol from flower buds of Gardenia jasminoides, guided by enzymatic hydrolysis followed by GC and GC-MS analyses.

Methods for the stereoselective synthesis of alpha-(1-->2)- and alpha-(1-->3)-linked 6(II)-O-phosphomannobiosides were developed. Two strategies were successfully employed: a D-mannosyl acceptor was coupled with a phosphorylated D-mannosyl trichloroacetimidate donor, or alternatively with a differentially 6-O-protected D-mannosyl trichloroacetimidate donor which, after glycosylation, was selectively deprotected and phosphorylated. Two target phosphomannobiosides intended for use in SAR studies of the antiangiogenic drug candidate PI-88, 2-O-(6-O-phospho-alpha-D-mannopyranosyl)-D-mannopyranose and methyl 3-O-(6-O-phospho-alpha-D-mannopyranosyl)-alpha-D-mannopyranoside, were synthesized. The former is a minor component of the side-chain repeating unit of the extracellular phosphomannan of Pichia (Hansenula) holstii NRRL Y-2448, whilst the latter represents a nonreducing end fragment of the phosphomannan.
The serum fraction of latex from Hevea brasiliensis, the para rubber tree, is known to contain an endo-chitinolytic enzyme, hevamine. Herein the activity of the rubber serum towards beta-chitin is investigated. The serum contained 6 mg/mL of protein and a chitinolytic activity of 18 mU permg of protein. The optimum ratio of enzyme to chitin was 0.22 mU/mg, and the optimum substrate concentration was 60 mg/mL. The optimum pH range was pH2-4, and the optimum temperature was 45 degrees C. At these conditions both (GlcNAc)2 and GlcNAc were produced in a molar ratio of approximately 2:1. The hydrolysis of 300 mg of chitin with 64 mU of the rubber serum for 8 days under the optimum conditions gave 39 mg of GlcNAc and 108 mg of (GlcNAc)2 as determined by HPLC. Mixing the rubber serum preparation with an Aspergillus niger pectinase preparation containing beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase can be used to produce almost exclusively the GlcNAc monomer in about 50% yield.
A facile synthetic approach toward oleanolic acid glycoside bearing alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl moiety, a unique oligosaccharide that strongly induces antitumor activity of oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins, was developed. Based on this approach beta-hederin (oleanolic acid 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside) was efficiently prepared from oleanolic acid through stepwise glycosylation in linear eight steps with 52% overall yield, while Hederacolchiside A1 (oleanolic acid 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)]-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside) in linear 13 steps with 20% overall yield.
