[The characters of proliferating activity and biosynthetic function of fibroblasts from abnormal scars after complete contact in vitro].

OBJECTIVE: This study was to determine the proliferating and biosynthetic characters of fibroblasts from abnormal scars and normal skins after complete contact in vitro. METHODS: 6 samples of keloid, hypertrophic scar and normal skin were collected respectively. Proliferation, inhibition and biosyntheses of different fibroblasts were investigated by detecting proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), P16, type I and III collagen proteins, and Pro alpha 1 (I) and Pro alpha 1 (III) procollagen gene expressions under the condition of fibroblast complete contact by means of cell culture, immunohistochemistry and molecular biological techniques, etc. RESULTS: Overlap and high levels of proliferating activity and biosyntheses of complete contact fibroblasts from keloids indicated that these fibroblasts lost the behavior of contact inhibition and density inhibition. However, proliferating activity and biosynthetic function of complete contact fibroblasts from normal skins reduced dramatically. Biosynthetic function of complete contact fibroblasts from hypertrophic scars was still very strong, but proliferating activity was lower than keloid and higher than normal skin. CONCLUSION: Proliferating and biosynthetic characters of complete contact fibroblasts from abnormal scars and normal skins were different, which may play an important role in the mechanisms of abnormal scar formation.

[Clinicopathological character and long-term results of thymic epithelial tumor categorized by WHO classification].

We analyzed clinicopathological character and long term results of 50 thymic epithelial tumors with reference to WHO histologic classification. There were 1 type A tumor, 8 type AB tumors, 13 type B1 tumors, 16 type B2 tumors, 10 type B3 tumors, and 2 type C tumors. Clinical stages were progressive in order of classification type A, AB, B1, B2, B3, and C. Type B1 and B2 were highly associated with myasthenia gravis (MG). There were four multiple thimic tumor in patients of advance clinical stage with polygonal epithelial cell tumor. Long term results were poor in order of the classification of type A, AB, B1, B2, B3, and C. In our study, WHO classification finely reflected the clinical character and prognosis of thymic epithelial tumors.

[Visual perception of Kanji characters and complicated figures. II. Visual P300 event-related potentials in patients with mental retardation].

In order to objectively evaluate visual perception of patients with mental retardation (MR), the P300 event-related potentials (ERPs) for visual oddball tasks were recorded in 26 patients and 13 age-matched healthy volunteers. The latency and amplitude of visual P300 in response to the Japanese ideogram stimuli (a pair of familiar Kanji characters or unfamiliar Kanji characters) and a pair of meaningless complicated figures were measured. In almost all MR patients visual P300 was observed, however, the peak latency was significantly prolonged compared to control subjects. There was no significant difference of P300 latency among the three tasks. The distribution pattern of P300 in MR patients was different from that in the controls and the amplitudes in the frontal region was larger in MR patients. The latency decreased with age even in both groups. The developmental change of P300 latency corresponded to developmental age rather than the chronological age. These findings suggest that MR patients have impairment in processing of visual perception. Assessment of P300 latencies to the visual stimuli may be useful as an objective indicator of mental deficit.

[A comparison of the kinetic characters of NT-3, NT-4 and BDNF retrogradely transported in facial nerve].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the kinetic characters of retrograde transport of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) and brain-derived neurotrophin factor (BDNF) in facial nerve. METHODS: Radioactive tracer technique was used. After one lateral facial nerve trunk of adult rabbit was transected, a silicone chamber was inserted between the stumps, and 3.7 MBq of 125I-NT-3 or 125I-NT-4 or 125I-BDNF or 125I-HSA was administered into the chamber. At different time-points after injection, the facial nerve trunk and facial nerve motor neurone of brain-stem were collected and the uptake rates were measured. The kinetic parameters of each labeled compound were calculated using 3P87 program of kinetics. RESULTS: The transport amount of neurotrophin retrogradely transported by facial nerve is NT-3 > BDNF > NT-4 (P < 0.05), the transport rate is NT-4 > NT-3 > BDNF (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings could serve as the kinetic characters of retrograde transport of neurotrophins.

[Comparison of rDNA-ITS2 sequences and morphological characters of Anopheles kunmingensis and Anopheles langshanensis in China, with discussion on taxonomic status].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the taxonomic status of Anopheles kunmingensis (AK) and An. liangshanensis(AL) from China. METHODS: Sequence differences of rDNA-ITS2 and main morphological characters variability between different sources of AK and AL were compared. RESULTS: The level of rDNA-ITS2 sequence differences among eight samples was under 2.9%. The total occurrence rates of main morphological characters examined in the female mosquitoes with pale fringe spot on V5.2, white basal band (or spot) on hind tarsomere IV, and larvae with bifurcated head hair 2-C were 43%(9/21), 89%(17/19), 40(4/10) in AK, and 79%(34/43), 44%(17/39), 20%(4/20) in AL, respectively. These rates calculated from separate colonies fluctuated within a wide range and overlapped, suggesting that there was no definite, stable morphological difference between AK and AL. CONCLUSION: The morphological and molecular variations between AK and AL were small and belong to intraspecific level. The AK and AL may be considered as the same species, and that the An. kunmingensis may be recognized as the synonym of An. liangshanensis.

[Study on the biological character of liposome-mediated 99m-technetium labeled antisense oligonucleotide for c-myc mRNA].

OBJECTIVE: To probe the biological character of liposome-mediated 99m-technetium-labeled antisense oligonucleotide of c-myc mRNA, and lay the foundations for clinical research on antisense image or treatment. METHODS: Antisense, sense and scrambled oligonucleoyide, each containing 15 bases, were synthesized elsewhere. The rates of liposome-entrapped 99mTc-DNA and 99mTc-DNA combination with plasma protein were tested through trichloroacetic acid precipitation. BALB/c mice were used to test the biodistribution in vivo, and rabbits were used to investigate the pharmacokinetics characters. RESULTS: Their rates of combination with plasma protein ranged from 34.81% to 70.53%. Reticuloendothelial system played an important role in the biodistribution; stomach, blood and intestines were less important; other tissues accumulated the least of the liposome-mediated 99mTc-labeled c-myc oligonucleotides. The pharmacokinetics of liposome-entrapped 99mTc-DNA fitted the open dithecal model. Their distribution (t1/2 alpha) half time was about 2 to 5 minutes, and clearance (t1/2 beta) half time about 100 to 150 minutes. Plasma clearance was smaller than 2 ml/min. CONCLUSION: The rate of 99mTc-DNA combination with plasma protein was high. The biological half time of liposome-mediated 99mTc-DNA was proper. Plasma clearance was high. So liposome-mediated 99mTc-DNA is a potential kind of radioactive agent.

[The character of glial line-cell derived neurotrophic factor mRNA expression in a facial nerve-striking model].

OBJECTIVE: It has been known that glial line-cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has the nutritional and protective effect in motor neurons. In this experiment, we investigated the character of GDNF mRNA expression in a facial nerve-striking model; combined with other scholars' experimental results; and analyzed what role GDNF plays in the regeneration process of injured motor nerves. METHODS: We established a striking model in rabbit facial nerves with a striking gun with the striking velocity of 10 m/s and the total striking energy of 7.5 J. Then we detected the GDNF mRNA expression in facial neurons and axons with in situ hybridization on days 3, 7, 14 and 21 after striking. We counted the expression numbers of facial neurons and, compared with normal facial neurons and peripheral facial nerves. RESULTS: We detected GDNF mRNA expression in the facial neurons from day 3 to day 21 after the facial nerve injured by striking. The peak of GDNF mRNA expression appeared on the 7th day, and then the expression number of facial neurons decreased gradually. A high level expression was also detected on day 21. GDNF mRNA expression was not detected neither in Schwann cells nor in normal facial neurons from the 3rd day to the 21st day. CONCLUSION: GDNF is a kind of neurotrophic growing factor (NGF) that could be activated by injury. The character of GDNF mRNA expression was accordant to the process of nerve regeneration. These results showed that GDNF plays a very important role in the regeneration of injured motor nerves.

[Macromutations and evolution: fixation of Goldschmidt's macromutations as species and genus characters. Papillomatosis and appearance of macrovilli in the rodent stomach].

The cardiac portion of the stomach is lined with macrovilli in a few rodent genera. These are Mystromys (Cricetinae, Cricetidae), Myospalax (Myospalacinae, Cricetidae), Tachyoryctes (Tachyoryctinae, Cricetidae), and Cryptomys (Bathyergidae). The macrovilli favor the development of symbiotic flora and are called symbiovilli. Growth of the corneal epithelium of the cardiac portion of the stomach serves as a morphological basis of symbiovilli. Cases of a hereditary malignant neoplasm giving rise to the formation of multiple macrovilli in the cardiac portion of the stomach have been found in Microtus abbreviatus (Microtinae, Cricetidae), a vole endemic to St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea. The macrovilli resulting from the papillomatosis mutation are morphologically and histologically identical to the macrovilli of the stomach of the four aforementioned genera. The voles affected with papillomatosis still survive long enough to reproduce. Therefore, the macromutation that leads to death in adult and old voles has been fixed as a species character in some rodent genera. At the early stages of papillomatosis, the pathogenic morphogenesis creates favorable conditions for the development of symbiotic microflora, which gives a selective advantage to the affected animals. It is assumed that mutations with pathogenic effects have been fixed as a species character as a result of heterochrony. The pathogenic neoplasm serves as a preadaptation for the growth of symbiotic flora in the stomach. The mechanisms of the fixation of Goldschmidt's "systemic mutations" during phylogeny are discussed.

[CT characters of primary nasal non-Hodgkin lymphoma].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the computed tomography (CT) characters of primary nasal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) with histologic phenotype. METHOD: The CT data of 21 patients who were diagnosed as primary nasal NHL from 1994 to 2002 were analyzed retrospectively in which 16 cases have T-cell subtype, 2 with B-cell and 3 with T/NK-cell subtype in immunohistochemical examination. CT literatures were also evaluated in 40 patients with nasal polyp and 18 patients with non-NHL malignant tumor simultaneously as comparison groups. RESULT: Soft tissue mass and hypertrophic mucosa were the main CT finding in nasal NHL, neoplasms may be found growing in expanding manner like benign tumor (P < 0.01). Contrast to nasal polyp and other nasal malignant tumor, hypertrophic mucosa located on the front of nasal septum can be more frequently viewed (P < 0.01), thicken skin in nasal vestibule were only be found in NHL group. T-cell and B-cell region NHL have similar manifestations while T-NK cell region have more invasive erosion. CONCLUSION: CT images in primary nasal non-Hodgkin lymphoma have some typical characters, and may be correlated with the histologic phenotype.

[Study on the characters of hydrogen bonds in protein and nucleic acid of the breast cancer tissues].

Some remarkable spectral differences are observed between the normal breast tissues and breast cancer tissues, including those of association pattern and degree of the hydrogen bonds in the protein and nucleic acid biomacromolecules. These differences are found in the relative intensity, absorption position and shape of the characteristic bands: (1) amide I band, stretching vibration bands of N-H group and C-O(H) in the residues of some amino-acids, and (2) the relative intensity of asymmetric stretching vibration of the phosphodiester group in nucleic acid. The hydrogen bond is the major force which maintain and promote the formation of the high structure of protein and nucleic acid. It is possible to diagnose the breast cancer and forecast the possibility of canceration using above spectral characters of the hydrogen bond with other spectral characters.

Correlations between morningness-eveningness character, sleep habits and temperature rhythm in adolescents.

The correlations between morningness-eveningness character (Horne & Ostberg score), sleep habits and temperature acrophase of 62 adolescents (mean age 13 years and 6 months) were investigated on three occasions at 6-month intervals. Horne & Ostberg scores ranged from 29 to 74 with a similar distribution on the three occasions. Temperature acrophase mode occurred around 15:00 p.m. Earlier sleep onset time and wake-up time and earlier temperature acrophase were associated with morningness. The more evening type the adolescent was, the shorter was the sleep length on schools days and the longer was the sleep length on non-school days. Correlations between temperature acrophase and morningness-eveningness character were found in a subgroup of adolescents and require further confirmation. The correlations between morningness-eveningness and sleep habits were present on the three occasions investigated, indicating that these are stable correlations and that morningness-eveningness questionnaires can provide suitable information for studies of this age group.

[Toxic effects of Cd2+ pollution on the biochemical and physiological characters and ultrastructure of Alternanthera philoxeroides].

By imitating different concentration Cd2+ polluted water environment, this paper dealt with the changes of some biochemical and physiological characters and the damage of ultrastructure in leaves of Alternanthera philoxeroides. The result showed that SOD and POD activity first increased in the low concentration pollution and then decreased with the concentration of pollution raised. The content of chlorophyll, chlorophyll a/b value, CAT activity and the content of soluble protein all declined continually. With the concentration of pollution increased, the ultrastructure of cell nuclei, chloroplast and mitochondria became deformed, the permutation of structure inside disordered, swelled, membrane disrupted and vesiculated. The changes of some biochemical and physiological characters accorded with the damage of cell ultrastructure.

Sex hormones, personality characters and professional status among Saudi females.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between male and female sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol and progesterone), personality characters and professional status was studied. METHODS: The study was conducted in Riyadh City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between September 2003 and May 2003. The participants completed a questionnaire consisting of personal information regarding age, profession, educational level and medical history. Then the participant went through an adjective checklist. Hormones were determined from blood samples provided by the participant. RESULTS: The result indicated that the higher the professional levels, the higher was the testosterone concentrations, but not estradiol or estrogen concentration. Furthermore, females with higher testosterone concentration (university lecturers, bank managers, bank employee, medical doctors and technical workers) identify themselves as independent, strong, assertive, impulsive, resourceful, spontaneous, uninhibited, rational, patient and arguing. Whereas, females with lower testosterone concentrations (housewives and clerical workers) view themselves as civilized, socialized, calm, quite, sentimental, shy, nice, sensitive, warmhearted, sympathetic, thoughtful, warm, practical and kind. CONCLUSION: The current study emphasizes the positive relationship between strong personality characters, high professional status and male sex hormone level (testosterone) in females.

[A new morphological character for the identification of Stomoxys calcitrans and S. niger (Diptera: Muscidae). Comparison of La Réunion island populations].

On La Reunion Island (France), two morphological closely related species of stable flies (Diptera: Muscidae), living in the same environment, Stomoxys calcitrans and S. niger, are involved in the transmission of blood parasites to the livestock. To facilitate a rapid identification of both species in the field conditions, we highlighted a diagnostic morphological character not yet described: the length of the maxillary palpus. The study of three populations of S. calcitrans and two populations of S. niger, collected at various elevations, showed that the maxillary palpi of S. niger were significantly longer than in S. calcitrans, independent of sex. This character, easily visible in the field with a simple magnifying glass, has been confirmed on individuals of both species from West Africa.
