Two methods of preparing the pig-skin at a meat-packing plant and its application as a biological bandage in the clinic of thermal injuries are described. The first method is the sterile preparing. The second one--xenotransplants are prepared without an observation of aseptics rules. The material is subject to lyophilic drying and sterilization by gamma rays. The application of xenotransplants gave good results in the treatment of 107 patients with burns.

In experiments on animals a method of studying electrostatic and hemostatic properties of collagens was worked out. Following hemostatic collagen sponges were used: Superstat (Interface Biomedical Laboratories Corporation, USA), Hemostatic Felt (B. Braun, BRD), collagen sponge and collagen foil (Central Tissue Bank of Transplantation Institute, Medical Academy, Warsaw). Biological experiments were performed on rabbits in 4 groups, depending of the implanted material. Basing on surgical macro- and microscopic evaluation it was found that collagen preparations used in the experiments shorten the duration of bleeding of damaged liver, and that biological reactivity of studied collagen preparations is proportional to the duration of their resorption time in tissues. The shortest resorption time gave the Superstat.

The authors present a literature review of porcine grafting and its application at Westside Veterans Administration Medical Center. Porcine xenografts allow wounds that would normally need skin grafting and are slow or nonhealing to close without additional trauma to the patient.

In an animal experiment study the effect of collagen sponge treatment on skin wounds was examined. In a test for defense mechanism, the bandage material was accepted without any disturbance of the surrounding tissue. It could also be removed without any damage to the wound area while renewing the covering bandage. In contrast to the controls, there was a statistically significant difference in the decreasing wound area. No tract formation of the wound edges was observed in the experimental group, and histologically the wounds showed an earlier fiber formation with functional orientation toward the wound surface. The advantages of treatment using collagen instead of inert material include better compatibility, a positive cosmetic effect, and a stimulation of wound healing without the necessity of a two-stage transplantation.
