[Actinomyces pneumonicus var. altamicus var. nov., a producer of new altamycin antibiotics].

Actinomycete LIA-0788 was isolated from a soil sample. By its morphological and cultural features the actinomycete was close to Actinomyces pneumonicus and differed from it in the antibiotic properties. This provided classification of actinomycete LIA-0788 as Act. pneumonicus var. altamicus var nov. The culture produced altamycins A and B, new antibiotics. Their physico-chemical characteristics is presented.

[Conditions for the self-organization of submicroscopic structures from mycelial extracts of the "fructose" variant of Actinomyces roseflavus var. roseofungini].

Self-organization of various submicroscopic formations, such as "tubes", "ribbons", etc. differing in ultrastructure and containing a polyenic antibiotic was observed in acetone extracts of the mycelium of the "fructose" variant of Actinomyces roseoflavus var. roseofungini. Conditions for separate isolation of the above structures are described. Concentration of the extract and the ratio of the volumes of water added to the extract are determinant for the process of self-organization. A possibility of reorganization of the tubular structures into the ribbon-like ones and vice versa is shown.

[Actinomyces globispororoseus var. granaticus var. nov., a new producer of granaticins].

Actinomycete LIA-0830 was most close by its morphological and cultural features tc Act. globispororoseus. Jet it differed from the latter in the physiological and antibioti properties. Actinomycete LIA-0830 differed from the known granaticin- and granaticin B-producing organisms by its morphological, cultural and physiological properties. On the basis of these data actinomycete LIA-0830 was classified as Actinomyces globispororoseus var. granaticus var. nov. The culture produced 2 antibiotics: granaticin and granaticin B.

[Production of tubular structures from the aerial mycelium of Actinomyces roseoflavus var. roseofungini].

Tubular formations analogous by their structure to those found on the surface of the outer sheath of the hyphae of the aerial mycelium of Actinomyces roseoflavus var. roseofungini were reconstructed in vitro from the mycelium acetone extract on addition of water. A polyenic antibiotic was shown to be present in the composition of the "tubes". A possible role of the antibiotic in the genesis of the secondary structures of the actinomycete is discussed.

[Lytic enzymes produced by Actinomyces levoris].

The composition of the enzyme complex produced by Actinomyces levoris which exhibits lytic action on the cell walls of Streptococcus lactis was studied by gel filtration on Sephadex G-25, ion exchange chromatography and isoelectric focusing. The complex was found to contain at least seven enzymes having different isoelectric points and substrate specificity. The enzymes were divided into three groups. (1) The enzyme with pI 10.2 seems to be a specific glucosidase; it possesses a high activity of the cell wall lysis and lacks a proteolytic activity. (2) The enzymes with pI 9.2 and 9.0 are, apparently, specific lytic proteases; they display both lytic and proteolytic activities. (3) The enzymes with pI 10.0, 9.5, 5.7 and 4.2 are, presumably, non-specific lytic proteases; they have a low lytic activity and a high proteolytic activity.

[Spontaneous crystallization of antibiotic substance during submerged fermentation of Actinomyces hygroscopicus].

A rare case of spontaneous crystallization of the antibiotic substance was detected during submerged cultivation of Actinomyces hygroscopicus, strain 33x, under periodic conditions directly in the MTF 5L3 fermenter ("Marubishi"). Leaf-shaped plates of the antibiotic found in the cultural broth of the strain 33x were active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, yeasts, and fungi. The crystalline state of the structures was confirmed by the X-ray analysis. According to their UV spectrum (maximum at 233-234 nm in ethanol), the crystals belong to the group of nyphimycin A1-scopafungin, antibiotics produced by some cultures of Act. hygroscopicus.

[Actinomyces as a causal agent of tonsillar pathology].

Various tonsillar diseases caused by Actinomyces are described, including acute and chronic tonsillitis and neoplasm-like forms. These forms are illustrated by a clinical case because of the importance of considering this cause in the differential diagnosis.
