Natural radionuclides in industrial and rural soils.

Radium-226, lead-210, uranium and thorium are dispersed in the environment by fly ash emitted by coal fuelled power stations. Concentrations of these nuclides have been determined in fly ash from three power stations and in soils collected in six industrial and twenty rural regions. In industrial areas the concentrations of natural radionuclides, in a 5 cm thick surface soil layer, were found to be higher than in lower layers. With the exception of lead-210 this effect was not observed in rural soils, which contained less of radium-226, uranium and thorium. It was found that the type of coal, or combustion technology, influences the amount of radium-226 dispersed in the environment which is accessible to plants.

Early effects of gentamicin on inner ear glycocalyx cytochemistry.

The early effects of gentamicin treatment on the inner ear glycocalyx were investigated using two cationic probes, colloidal thorium and cationized ferritin. Gentamicin treatment resulted in a diminished thorium reactivity of both the endolymphatic and perilymphatic glycocalyx of the hair cells after 1 day and complete abolishment of reactivity after 5 days. Cationized ferritin reactivity of the perilymphatic and endolymphatic glycocalyx was not significantly influenced. The cytochemistry of the inner ear glycocalyx and the possible biochemical changes induced by gentamicin are discussed.

Characterization of a military training site containing 232Thorium.

Understanding contaminant distribution is critical to selection and implementation of effective and affordable containment and remediation efforts. This article describes the characterization of soil containing thorium at a training site on Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM. The site has been used by the Defense Nuclear Weapons School since the early 1960's to train personnel in emergency response to nuclear weapons accidents and for characterization and containment of radioactive contamination. The purpose of work reported herein is to describe the primary location and migration pattern of 232Thorium (232Th) and 232Th progeny (decay products) at the site. Soil containing thorium oxide (ThO2) was applied to the site for approximately 30 years (early 1960-1990) and was used to simulate a plutonium release from a nuclear weapons accident. Data presented indicate that surface 232Th and 232Th progeny at approximately 5 times background levels are approaching test site boundaries. However, the data also indicate that vertical migration has not exceeded 0.9 m because of the insoluble nature of ThO2. The major mechanisms of 232Th mobility appear to be surface migration mediated by precipitation runoff and wind-blown soil.

Radon concentrations in a spa in Serbia.

The paper presents the results of indoor radon concentration survey in 201 homes and offices in Niska Banja (the Spa of Nis), a well-known health resort and a spa in the South-East of Serbia. Radon indoor concentrations were determined by active charcoal method, according to standard EPA procedure. The indoor radon concentrations were in the range of up to 200 Bq/m(3) (47%), from 200-600 Bq/m(3) (26%) and over 600 Bq/m(3) (27%). Three areas of extremely high average radon concentrations were found (1,340-4,340 Bq/m(3)), with a maximum above 13,000 Bq/m(3). The content of natural radionuclides ((226)Ra, (214)Pb, (214)Bi, (235)U, (228)Ac, (212)Pb, (212)Bi, (208)Tl, (40)K) and (137)Cs, as well as the content of total uranium, thorium and potassium in mud used in peloidotherapy in the Health Institute "Niska Banja" was determined, too. The activities of the radionuclides were determined on an HPGe detector, by standard gamma spectroscopy. The results indicated considerably high amounts of total uranium and thorium (0.021 g/kg mud and 0.003 g/kg mud, respectively), due to the karsts origin of the soil.

Separation and determination of rare earth elements by Dowex 2-X8 resin using sodium trimetaphosphate as elution agent.

The distribution coefficients of rare earth elements and thorium with Dowex 2-X8, 200-400 mesh, a strongly basic anion-exchange resin, have been determined regarding four different concentrations of sodium trimetaphosphate (3 x 10(-3), 5 x 10(-3), 7 x 10(-3) and 0.01 M). The separation of the rare earths and thorium obtained from an Australian monazite has been investigated by anion-exchange chromatography with sodium trimetaphosphate concentration gradient on a Dowex 2-X8 ion-exchange columns. The order of elution of the elements was the reverse of the order of elution of the same elements on Dowex 1 resin. The elution was investigated using 5 mg and 250 mg samples. In the separation of 5 mg samples, all elements were separated in 29 min. It has been seen that the elution peaks are narrow, tailing effects are very small, Dy and Y are well separated. Qualitative and quantitative determinations were realized by spectrofluorometry.

Daily intakes of 238U, 234U, 232Th, 230Th, 228Th and 226Ra in the adult population of central Poland.

Activity concentration of the uranium and thorium series radionuclides was determined in foodstuffs and drinking water in central Poland. Annual and daily intake for the adult population was estimated from the concentrations determined and average annual consumption of food and water. The daily intakes (in mBq) were 22.1 (238U), 26.5 (234U), 2.38 (232Th), 4.06 (230Th), 11.2 (228Th) and 42.2 (226Ra). The intake of uranium isotopes occurred mainly with water; the main intake of thorium isotopes was with animal products, vegetables, cereals and potatoes, whereas 226Ra entered mainly with animal products, cereals and vegetables. From the intake and dose coefficients, the annual effective doses for the ingested radionuclides were calculated. The annual effective dose was 5.95 microSv, of which 72.4% originated from 226Ra.

Removal of radionuclides at a waterworks.

A waterworks with an average production rate of 1.3 m3 s(-1), providing several large cities in the province of Scania with drinking water has been studied regarding its capacity to remove several natural and anthropogenic radionuclides. The raw water is surface water from lake Bolmen which is transported through an 80 km long tunnel in the bedrock before it enters the waterworks. The method used for purification is a combination of coagulation-flocculation and filtration in sand filters. Two different purification lines are currently in use, one using Al2(SO4)3 as a coagulant and one using FeCl3. After coagulation and flocculation the precipitate is removed and the water is passed through two different sand filters (rapid filtration and slow filtration). Water samples were collected at the lake, the inlet to the waterworks, after each of the flocculation basins (Al2(SO4)3 and FeCl3), after rapid filtration and from the municipal distribution network. The samples were analysed with respect to their content of uranium, thorium, polonium, radium, plutonium and caesium. The results show a high removal capacity for uranium (about 85%), thorium (>90%), plutonium (>95%) and polonium (>90% in the coagulation-flocculation process) while caesium, strontium and radium pass through the purification process with almost unchanged activity concentrations. During transportation of the water in the tunnel it was also observed that infiltration of groundwater leads to a change in isotopic ratios and/or activity concentrations for the naturally occurring radionuclides and plutonium.

The potential of lichens as long-term biomonitors of natural and artificial radionuclides.

Lichens were used as biomonitors of Chernobyl fallout 137Cs, of cosmogenic 7Be and of radioactive members of the natural uranium and thorium decay chains. Samples were taken from two locations in France, including lichens sampled at different distances of a coal fired power plant and close to a uranium ore processing waste disposal site. All samples were analyzed gamma-spectrometrically after equilibrium concentrations of short-lived isotopes had been attained. Activity concentrations of the members of the uranium and thorium decay chains in Parmelia sulcata sampled 1994 decrease with distance from the plant, whereas in lichens taken at the waste disposal site a decrease with time was observed. Comparison of 7Be activity concentrations measured in lichens with atmospheric deposition rates confirms that P. sulcata can be used as a quantitative biomonitor of radioactive trace substances. Retention half-lives calculated with a simple one-compartment model are 2.6 +/- 1.2 years for cesium, which was detected in all samples even more than a decade after the Chernobyl accident, and of 0.7 (+/- 0.1) to 3.3 (+/- 0.7) years for lead. Consequences of our results for model identifiability and parameter estimation of a two-compartment model are discussed.

Lactic acid production from molasses by Lactobacillus bulgaricus AU in presence of U, Th, Zr, and Tl.

The influence of uranium, thorium, zirconium, and thallium (I) on fermentation production of lactic acid from molasses by Lacstobacillus bulgaricus AU was studied. It was found that thorium, at lower experimental concentration, and zirconium, at higher experimental concentration, stimulate the acid-producing activity of the bacteria, while uranium and thallium reduce. it.

Plutonium and other alpha-emitters in bones of wild, herbivorous animals from north-eastern Poland.

The results of the investigation of (239+240)Pu, 241Am and thorium isotope activity concentrations in bones of wild herbivorous animals (deer, roe-deer, boars, elks) from north-eastern Poland are presented. The area on which the animals were living had relatively high Chernobyl plutonium fallout. Possible traces of plutonium were seen only in four samples, but only for one it was it 3sigma above background, at 6.2 +/- 2.4 mBq/kg (ash). The 241Am activity concentration was below the detection limits in all samples. The maximum 228Th concentration in the samples was 7.81 +/- 0.44 Bq/kg (ash), calculated under the assumption of 100% thorium recovery. This isotope seems to originate in bones not from direct incorporation but from the decay of 228Ra. Large variations in activity concentration wose observed, as well as some differences between boars and the chewing animals.

Characteristics of NORM in the oil industry from eastern and western deserts of Egypt.

Naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) from the 232Th- and 238U-series, which are omnipresent in the earth's crust, can be concentrated by technical activities, particularly those involving natural resources. Although, a great deal of work has been done in the field of radiation protection and remedial action on uranium and other mines, recent concern has been devoted to the hazard arising from naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in oil and gas facilities. NORM wastes associated with oil and gas operations from scale deposits, separated sludge and water at different oil fields in the eastern and western deserts were investigated. Concentrations of the uranium, thorium, and potassium (40K) series have been determined from high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. Total uranium content of samples was determined using laser fluorimetry. The levels of radioactivity were mainly due to enhanced levels of dissolved radium ions. Only minute quantities of uranium and thorium were present. The disequilibrium factor for 238U/226Ra has been determined.

Infrared spectra and structures of the Th(OH)2 and Th(OH)4 molecules.

Thorium atoms react with H2O2, H2 + O2 mixtures, and H2O in excess argon to form the Th(OH)2 and Th(OH)4 molecules as minor and major products, respectively. The vibrational frequencies observed in the matrix infrared spectra are in excellent agreement with MP2 computed values, which confirms the identification of these highly ionic thorium hydroxide molecules. Our MP2 calculations converge to slightly bent and tetrahedral structures, respectively. This investigation reports the first evidence for pure actinide dihydroxide and tetrahydroxide molecules.

Chemical toxicity of some actinides and lanthanides towards alveolar macrophages: an in vitro study.

PURPOSE: To compare the toxicity of lanthanides (cerium, gadolinium) with actinides (thorium, neptunium, uranium) added in soluble form to rat alveolar macrophage cultures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The metals were added 1 day after seeding alveolar macrophages extracted by pulmonary lavage, and the metal toxicity was scored 3 days later. Cell death was measured after vital staining to distinguish between apoptosis and necrosis; relative cell density was also quantified. The physico-chemical form of the metals in the culture medium was characterized using filtration and radioactive measurements. RESULTS: Except for thorium, induction of cell death was observed for all the elements studied and the death mechanism involved was apoptosis. Graduated toxicity was observed from uranium to neptunium, cerium and gadolinium, in the range of concentration from 10(-3)-10(-6) M. From pilot experiments, it was hypothesized that soluble compounds were mainly involved in lanthanide toxicity, whereas insoluble forms were mainly involved in actinide toxicity. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the toxicity of neptunium and uranium was concomitant with the presence of insoluble forms in the culture medium. Further studies are needed to characterize the cell death mechanisms involved and the potential synergistic effects of chemical toxicity and irradiation.

Electron microscope studies on the surface coat of the nephron.

Attempts to make visible the carbohydrate coat at the free cell surface of glomeruli as well as the tubules of rabbit kidney were undertaken. The ruthenium red procedure was performed, according to Luft, at various pH values. Moreover, the colloidal iron and the colloidal thorium methods were used. Neuraminidase digestion was also performed. In the ruthenium red procedure the luminal face of the epithelial cells of the nephron was coated distinctly with reaction product. The results obtained revealed that some of the differences at various levels of the nephron depended on the pH values. In glomeruli and proximal convoluted tubules the optimum pH value was 7.4; in the ascending limb of Henle loops and distal convoluted tubules the optimum pH value was 6.8. The ruthenium red-positive surface coat was either closely connected with, or appeared as a part of, the outer leaflet of the unit membrane. The slit pores of glomeruli were also covered by a coat continuous with the surface coat of the adjacent foot processes. The coat lining the microvilli of proximal convoluted tubules completely filled the intervillous spaces. Also, both the colloidal iron method and the colloidal thorium method evidenced the presence of surface coat. Pre-treatment with neuraminidase abolished the effect of the Hale reaction. These results may indicate that the surface coat of the epithelia of the nephron shows the presence of glycoproteins containing siliac acid residues.

Studies on the permeability of lymphatic capillaries.

The passageway for interstitial fluids and large molecules across the connective tissue lymph interface has been investigated in dermal lymphatic capillaries in the ears of guinea pigs. Numerous endothelial cells overlap extensively at their margins and lack adhesion devices at many points. The observations suggest that these sites are free to move as a result of slight pressure changes. Immediately following interstitial injections of tracer particles (ferritin, thorium, carbon, and latex spheres), many of the overlapped endothelial cells are separated and thus passageways are provided between the interstitium and lymphatic lumen. Tracer particles also occur in plasmalemmal invaginations along both connective tissue and luminal fronts. All of the tracer particles accumulate within large autophagic-like vacuoles. Very few particles of ferritin are observed in the endothelium after 24 hr; however, the vesicles containing the nonprotein tracer particles (carbon, thorium, and latex) increase in size and content and remain within the lymphatic endothelial cells up to 6 months. The role of vesicles in the transport of large molecules and particles is discussed in relation to the accretion of tracer particles within large vesicles and autophagic-like vacuoles in the endothelial cytoplasm.

Discrimination between thorotrast and iodine contrast medium by means of dual-energy CT scanning.

A dual-energy CT scanning method is proposed to discriminate between thorotrast and iodine contrast medium in patients suspected of having thorotrast deposits in the spinal canal as a consequence of myelography injections. The ratio of CT numbers at two X-ray tube voltages was used to distinguish the two materials in the analysis of dual-energy CT scanning. The K-edge of thorium was used to enhance the discrimination sensitivity. Theoretical analysis predicted the feasibility of the method and this was verified by experiment. The sensitivity for the discrimination between thorium and iodine is much higher than that achieved by the gamma-ray counting technique using a whole-body counter. This method, the ratio of CT numbers at two kV values, may be useful in other clinical applications.

The physical performance of different x-ray contrast agents: calculations using a Monte Carlo model of the imaging chain.

A Monte Carlo computational model of the imaging chain has been used to investigate the performance of x-ray contrast agents with atomic number, Z, 53 < or = Z < or = 90 with respect to physical image quality descriptors (contrast and signal to noise ratio, SNR) and patient mean absorbed dose. Contrast agents of equal molar concentrations were used within a water slab (simulating the patient). The imaging conditions were chosen to represent adult and paediatric examinations. For all tube potentials studied (40-140 kV), the contrast agents with the highest atomic numbers (bismuth and thorium) gave the highest contrast. In analogue screen-film imaging, several other contrast agents could produce a higher image contrast than iodine in a limited range of tube potentials. This advantage could alternatively be effected as a reduced amount of administered contrast agent, or as a reduced mean absorbed dose in the patient. In digital imaging, a lower mean absorbed dose for a constant SNR than that with iodine can be achieved for ranges of tube potentials and contrast agents. Bismuth and thorium yield a lower dose than iodine at all studied tube potentials. Gadolinium and erbium could alternatively be used at a broad range of tube potentials above 90 kV with a dose penalty of only 5-20%.

Cancer mortality in the commune of Pargny sur Saulx in France.

Radioactive thorium wastes were found in April 1997 at the former industrial site of 'Orflam-Plast' in the commune of Pargny sur Saulx in the Northeast of France, where industrial activity began in 1934. On this site, between 1934 and 1970, cerium for lighter stones and thorium nitrate were extracted from imported monazite sand, a mineral containing elevated levels of natural radioactivity. We decided to study cancer mortality in the surrounding population. We found an excess of mortality due to lung and bladder cancer in the commune of Pargny sur Saulx and its neighbours, between 1968 and 1994. This excess did not seem to be linked to the river of Saulx which was a possible source of contamination. We conclude that a cancer incidence study of the former workers of this industrial site is necessary in order to investigate the role of natural radioactivity from monazite processing in the risk of cancer mortality among this workforce.
