Canonical correlation of a temporal lobe signs scale with schizoid and hypomania scales in a normal population: men and women are similar but for different reasons.

The relationships between four relevant Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory variables and temporal lobe signs and symptoms were determined separately for 70 university men and 86 women. Canonical correlations were similar in magnitude (0.55 to 0.60) but indicated sex-specific construction of the roots. For men the significant variables were the schizoid and complex partial epileptic-like signs; for women the significant variables were hypomania and all three temporal lobe clusters: complex partial seizure experiences, interictal-like signs, and religious/psi phenomenology.

The scaling of the Katz Adjustment Scale in a traumatic brain injury rehabilitation sample.

Based on the KAS-R1 ratings completed by 88 relatives of clients who had enrolled in a post-acute rehabilitation programme, the 10 component groups discerned by Fabiano and Goran [1] were submitted to a classical analysis of tests. Seventy-nine items were found to contribute to the internal consistency of their respective component groups, resulting in alpha values ranging from 0.75 to 0.93 for the component groups. Intercorrelations between components suggested that while some degree of overlap existed between groups, they represented discrete categories of neurobehavioural functioning. Second-order components, as determined by principal-component analysis, discern two significant component groups. These two components correlated moderately, yielding a value of 0.49. The findings indicate that the revised KAS-R1 exhibits considerable potential for clinical utility. Further research is needed to investigate the validity of this instrument in accurately depicting behavioural manifestations of those who have incurred traumatic brain injury.

Genetic relationships for dairy performance between large-scale and small-scale farm conditions.

Genotype by environment interaction can be detected via the estimation of genetic correlations between environments under an animal model based on data comprising genetic links between the strata. Genetic correlations were estimated for protein yield of Holstein cows within and across regions of Germany using REML under an animal model for lactation and test-day records. Subsets of the entire data were created, stratified by region or herd size within region, and comprised between 16,307 and 132,972 cows with first-lactation records. Substantial heterogeneity exists between regions in Western and Eastern Germany. In Western states, most farms are small, with typical herd sizes of 30 to 60 cows, whereas in Eastern states, mostly large herds with herd sizes of 500 to 2000 cows are common. The results show drastic differences for residual and permanent environmental variance components between Eastern and Western regions with increases of around 30% for Eastern regions. Additive genetic variances were of similar magnitude in both regions. Genetic correlations between Eastern and Western states were between 0.90 and 0.95 but dropped to 0.79 when data from an Eastern state were reduced to contain large herds only. The results indicate that differences in herd size account for more of the differences in genetic correlation than do geographic regional differences.
