A pathology review of breast cancers in Japanese and Caucasian women indicates more numerous in situ carcinomas in the Japanese. Carcinomas with uniform nuclei were also more numerous among Japanese. Japanese women showed more extensive lymphocytic infiltrates adjacent to their tumors than did Caucasian women, and also showed more conspicuous sinus histiocytosis in tumor-free lymph nodes. Fewer Japanese women had lymph node metastases and those with metastases were less likely to have three or more nodes involved. Of these differences only those relating to local invasion, nuclear grade, lymphocytic infiltration, and sinus histiocytosis were statistically significant, but the demonstrated differences are internally consistent with differences in breast cancer incidence and mortality in the two races. Since the two races share the same medical care system and similar environments, the basis of these differences is probably a genetic modulation of hormonal balance and/or immunologic response.

Cranii of 53 Hawaiian aboriginal infants and children, and 45 from Austrailian aboriginal children were inspected. Cribra orbitalia was present in 22.8% of the former and 26.6% of the latter; osteoporotic pitting (symmetrical osteoporosis; porotic hyperostosis) was also present in the latter. The frequency compares favorably with that found in pre-Columbian North American Pueblo Indians, 24.7%. It is associated with a widespread skeletal involvement suggestive of an active bone marrow. The findings support the concept that cribra orbitalia is related to symmetrical osteoporosis and that it may be associated with a blood disorder.
A cohort study of upper aerodigestive tract cancer was conducted among 7,995 Japanese-American men who were interviewed and examined from 1965 to 1968. Information was collected about smoking history and alcohol and dietary intake. After 24 years, 92 incident cases with histological confirmation of diagnosis were identified. Current cigarette smokers at time of examination had a 3-fold risk for upper aerodigestive tract cancer compared with never-smokers. A dose-response relationship was present with increasing amount and duration of cigarette use. Consumption of beer, wine, spirits and total alcohol was strongly associated with increased risk. Of 23 food and beverage categories, only candy/jelly/soda pop consumption had a statistically significant inverse trend. Frequent consumption of fruit was also inversely associated with this cancer. In contrast, the risk tended to be positively associated with consumption of rice, seaweed, tofu or tsukudani (a mixed dish of fish, sugar, soy sauce and seaweed), but the dose-response relationship was not statistically significant. For nutrient intake, increased calcium and fat intake decreased the risk for this cancer.

This is a retrospective review of 43 patients who had primary liver cancer diagnosed during 1974-1983. Patients' ages ranged from 27 to 84 years (median 52.5). Nine of 39 patients with hepatoma were females, while two of the four patients with cholangiocarcinoma were women. Hepatitis surface antigen was positive in 90% tested, and 62% had cirrhosis. Also, 60-65% were heavy users of alcohol and cigarettes. Alpha-fetoprotein was elevated in one of four white patients, and in six of eight patients of other races (75%). Tissue diagnosis was obtained by peritoneoscopy in 16, by percutaneous biopsy in 7, by laparotomy in 9, and at autopsy in 11. Only one of 11 patients who were explored has his lesion resected. About half of the cases diagnosed antemortem died 1 month or less after diagnosis. The median survival of hepatoma patients who had no specific treatment or systemic chemotherapy was 2 months. Two patients who received chemotherapy in conjunction with occlusion of the hepatic artery lived 16 to 19 months.

Bacteria which cause pink disease of pineapple, identified on the basis of their nutritional and biochemical activities, were found to belong to three genera. These bacteria include the following species: Gluconobacter oxydans, Acetobacter aceti, and Erwinia herbicola. Several pink disease strains required one to three vitamins for growth. Both G. oxydans strains 303D and 180 required biotin, nicotinic acid, and pantothenic acid for growth; E. herbicola 189 required only nicotinic acid; however, A aceti 295 was able to grow without any added supplements in glucose mineral salts medium. Optimal vitamin concentrations for maximal growth and optimal pH for the maximal number of generations per hour was established for a few pink disease strains.
This is a study of the association of Type A behavior with the prevalence and 8-year incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) among 2187 Japanese men in the Honolulu Heart Program cohort. Type A behavior was determined by the Jenkins Activity Survey questionnaire in 1970. The prevalence rate of total CHD was significantly associated with Type A behavior, and this association was independent of other major risk factors in multivariate analyses. With the incidence data, however, there was no significant association of any clinical type of CHD with Type A behavior. Examination of the relationship of Type A behavior to other risk factors showed significant associations with serum cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption. Pathologic findings among 48 men who died showed no association of Type A behavior with microscopic evidence of myocardial infarction or with grades of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries and aortas.
