[Transmission of trauma: unconscious fantasy and activation by external reality, with special reference to the Holocaust].

Herzog sees trauma as the incursion of certain kinds of hyper- and hypo-stimulation on the child or adult, interrupting the capacity for play (play as the creative acquisition of reality) and occasioning a change in the mode of play. The upshot is interactive acting-out in the relationship, in which the pre-programmed participation of the partner is essential. The author draws upon the case history of a man of the "second generation" to demonstrate how failure on the part of the parents to work through a trauma of their own meant that it was passed on to the son and his relationship to his wife. The return of the parents' trauma manifested itself most clearly in the necessity felt by the son to organise his own sexuality in a particular way.

The analysis of 'associating', 'interpreting' and 'words': use of this analysis to bring unconscious fantasies into the present and to achieve greater ego integration.

In this paper first presented in 1953 and now translated into English for the first time, the author gives an account of the phenomena that occur when the meaning of 'associating', 'interpreting' and 'words' is investigated. Her presentation is modelled on the manner of appearance and understanding of these phenomena. Because interpretation of a new aspect has always preceded its intellectual understanding, frequent repetitions will be observed, and one theme is sometimes adumbrated within another and developed more fully later. For all its drawbacks, such an exposition has the advantage of coming closest to reality. A schematisation would be premature and tend to conceal any errors, thus impeding subsequent understanding of the phenomena concerned. The author discusses the phenomena in their order of appearance. Although the order was the same in every case, she does not rule out the possibility that this might be because of her personal approach. The bibliography lists works that stimulated her interest and were particularly useful in the understanding and formulation of her work.

[Traumatism, memory and fantasy: the psychological reality].

With the ranging debate particularly in the United States regarding the establishment through the path of psychotherapy or psychoanalysis of the reality of traumatic events, the author insists on a rigourous use of the terms of the debate. The Freudian theory, surrounding the concept of psychic reality could not bear only on the unconditional support of either parts: recovered memories/false memories. On the contrary, emphasis must be put on the originality of the concept of psychic reality, which distinguishes itself from both eventful reality and pure imagination. The author underlines the specifically psychoanalytical approach of access to memory, and uses it to criticize notions of recovered memory as well as false memories, while reaffirming what would be a fundamental ethic of psychoanalysis and any other psychotherapy claiming to be inspired by it.

[Aggression, inanimate objects and fantasy of invulnerability].

Some highly aggressive children prefer to symbolize and express their inner experiences by toys, which represent "things" and not living creatures. The special function of this preference represents a defense structure of deanimation after traumatization. It implicates the phantasy, that inanimated objects are not part of the vivid dialogue and can "survive" every attack. Thus in the transferential relationship the deanimation can slowly be reanimated by borrowing the undestroyable aspects of a thing in combination with the suffering feelings of the therapist.

Characteristics of the interests, enthusiasms and fantasies of children and adolescents with a developing schizoid psychopathy.

A retrospective clinico-dynamical study of the interests fascinations and phantasies in 32 adolescents with a forming schizoid psychopathy demonstrates that these psychopathological phenomena, their content and motivation are determined mainly by microsocial environmental influences and are connected with the intellectual development, thinking and peculiar direction of the forming schizoid personality. These psychopathological structures do not go beyond the framework of overvalued and reactive structures.

If you had three wishes. Fantasies related to child psychiatry training.

This essay proposes a two-track fellowship program in child psychiatry that would allow persons to enter child psychiatry training from a background in pediatrics, as well as from general psychiatry. Such flexibility would attract fellows from a new "pool" of applicants and increase the number of qualified physicians whose primary interest would be the mental health needs of children and adolescents. In addition, the plan would promote sharing of resources from both fields to child psychiatry and pediatrics, resulting in numerous programmatic and administrative advantages.
