[Metabolism of C(14)-acetate by cestodes]

The adult worm and plerocercoid larva(sparganum) of Diphyllobothrium mansoni and Moniezia expansa employed in this experiment. The adult worms were divided into three portions, i.e. immature, mature and gravid proglottids, and each proglottids were incubated in 50 cc or 250 cc volume of special incubation flasks with incubation medium consisting of 10 cc of 25 cc of Krebs-Ringer phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The incubation medium was added C(14)-acetate and non-radioactive carrier Na-acetate so as to contain acetate concentration of 50 mg per cent. The worms were allowed to incubate for 5 hours in the Dubnoff metabolic shaking incubator at 38 degrees C. After incubation period, the lactate and pyruvate appearance rate, total CO2 production tate, the turnover rates were employed as pervious report(Seo et al., 1965). The quantitative analysis of C(14)-acetate utilized by the adult worm and plerocercoid larva of D. mansoni and M. expansa were compared and discussed in this report. According to these data of the experiment, it is impressed that the fatty acid such as acetate may play a role of major part of their metabolism in the adult worm and plerocercoid larva of D. mansoni, whereas minor part of acetate participated in the metabolism by M. expansa.

Cestode Fauna Of Hill-Stream Fishes In Garhwal Himalayas, India.

Ptychobothrium nayarensis n. sp. has been described from two hill-stream fishes, Barilius bola(Ham.) and Schizothorax richardsonii(Gray) at 325~750 mASL. The new species has been compared with close species. Taxometric evaluation of the new species has been done on available data.

The development of nonradioactive total genomic probes for strain and egg differentiation in taeniid cestodes.

Purified total genomic DNA labeled with photobiotin was used as a probe for the identification and differentiation of strains of Echinococcus granulosus and to distinguish between the morphologically identical eggs of 2 taeniid species. Such biotinylated probes are easily prepared and can be utilized effectively for rapid screening and identification of taeniid isolates by dot and Southern blotting. The use of total genomic DNA probes in high stringency hybridizations obviates the need for cloned sequences and has great potential for field use.

Helminth parasites of Rhinobatos planiceps Garman 1880, including two new species of cestodes, with comments on host specificity of the genus Rhinebothrium Linton 1890.

Rhinebothrium rhinobati sp. n. and Prochristianella heteracantha sp. n. are described from the skate, Rhinobatos planiceps Garman 1880 from Chile. New host records and locations are reported for Acanthobothrium olseni Daliley and Mudry 1969, Parachristianella monomegacantha Kruse 1959, and Proleptus acutus Dujardin 1845. The genus Rhinebothrium is reported from the host family Rhinobatidae for the first time and the host specificity of the genus Rhinebothrium to the Myliobatidae is discussed.

[The cestode fauna of the fam. Hymenolepididae in the anatine birds of Chukotka. The genus Dicranotaenia].

There are 5 species of the genus Dicranotaenia recorded in the North-west of Chukotka: Dicranotaenia coronula (?) (Dujardin, 1845), D. fallax (Krabbe, 1869), D. parvisaccata (Shepard, 1943), D. sacciperum (Mayhew, 1925) and D. clangulae sp. n. Brief characteristic of the new species. Rostellar hooks 24-28, their total length 17-20 mkm, blade 10-12 mkm, guard processus 7-9 mkm, basis 13-15 mkm. Blade is parallel to basis, significantly longer than guard processus, hook form of aploparaksoid type. Cirrus pouch with s-like bend and distal enlargement (as in D. fallax). Cirrus almost cylindrical, 115-136 mkm in length, diameter at base 20-23 mkm, distal diameter 13-16 mkm. Internal acessory sac (SAI) situated anterior and dorsal from base of cirrus, gradually attenuate to distal end, length of SAI 27-30, diameter at base 30-32. Descriptions of adult forms and metacestodes of four other species are given.

Tetraphyllidean cestodes from western North Atlantic selachians with descriptions of two new species.

Rhinebothrium corymbum sp. n. is described from Dasyatis americana Hildebrand and Schroeder. Rhabdotobothrium anterophallum sp. n. is reported from Mobula hypostoma (Bancroft) representing a new family of hosts (Mobulidae) for tetraphyllideans. Both new species can be distinguished from all others by the number and arrangement of bothridial loculi, position of the genital pore, and testes number and distribution. A new host and additional data are presented for Phoreiobothrium triloculatum Linton, 1901. The validity of Caulobothrium Baer, 1948, and Rhabdotobothrium Euzet, 1953, is discussed.

An enzymatic method (phospholipase B) for studies on cestode infection (Hymenolepis nana) and its suppression by chemotherapy.

The phospholipase B activity of the small intestine of mice infected with Hymenolepis nana has been studied to determine its value as a laboratory test for the presence of parasites and the chemotherapeutic effects of antitapeworm drugs. Mice infected with 500 H. nana eggs were examined on the 21st day of infection and the phospholipase B content of homogenates of small intestine was determined using lysolecithin (6.6 x 10(-3) M) as the substrate. Some of the infected animals were treated with niclosamide according to schedules and doses known to affect worm development. Presence or absence of parasites was verified by visual inspection of the intestinal content. The enzymatic and visual methods gave equivalent results in both infected-not treated and infected-treated groups. Special features of niclosamide action (relative refractoriness of the early parasitic forms, enhanced effect of multiple doses) have been confirmed. The enzymatic method is proposed as a procedure for laboratory testing in chemotherapeutic investigations.

[New species of cestodes, Aploparaksis parabirulai sp. n. (Hymenolepididae) from sandpipers in Chukot].

Description and drawings of a new species Aploparaksis parabirulai sp. n. from the intestine of Macrorhamphus griseus, caught in west Chukotka, are given. The main pecularities of the species are such the hooks of the probosis are 0.031--0.034 mm long; cirrus 0.13--0.14 mm long is armed with big triangle spines; vittelaria are situated aporal. Differentiation from related species--A. birulai Linstow, 1905, A. crassipenis Deblock et Rausch, 1968 and A. crassirostris (Krabbe, 1869) is given.
