Earlier studies recording single neuronal activity in the postcentral somatosensory cortex of monkeys converged in suggesting that the bilateral receptive fields were related exclusively to the body midline including the trunk, perioral face, and oral cavity. These neurons were recorded mostly in the rostral part of the gyrus, areas 3b and 1. However, the authors recently found a substantial number of neurons with bilateral receptive fields on extremities, hand/digits, shoulders/arms, or legs/feet in the caudalmost part (areas 2 and 5) of the postcentral gyrus. The authors review these results and discuss functional implications of the bilateral representation in the postcentral somatosensory cortex.

A 13-year-old girl with Ki-1 anaplastic large cell lymphoma (Ki-1ALCL) bulky deposits in the brain developed raised intracranial pressure and coma associated with asynchronous burst-suppression following standard dose cranial irradiation. Supportive care, steroids, and chemotherapy resulted in clinical improvement. Burst-suppression coma may be reversible when secondary to tumor, decrease in steroids, or radiation effects; the asynchrony localizes the lesion to cortical interconnections such as the corpus callosum.

MRI imaging using recovery and spin-echo techniques was carried out on three patients after surgical section of the corpus callosum to control intractable epilepsy. The scans revealed that the total callosotomy had been obtained in two patients, while partial sparing of splenial and rostral fibers was seen in the third.
Most neurosurgeons prefer an ipsilateral approach for medial surface arteriovenous malformations. Based on recent surgical experiences, we believe that a contralateral approach has some advantages in dealing with such lesions. Two cases are reported, and the rationale for the contralateral approach is discussed.
