Oscillations of body temperature at night.

There is increasing evidence that overheating is a contributing factor for some cot deaths. One hypothesis is that infant thermoregulation is closely related to respiratory control. To test this hypothesis it was necessary to determine the normal pattern of body temperature in the developing infant. A system has been designed and built to record continuously temperature signals from ambient, rectal, and various skin site sensors. Overnight studies were performed on 30 infants aged between 2 and 26 weeks in a hospital ward. Various time and frequency domain analyses of the temperature data have been developed. Analysis of body temperature rhythms has confirmed patterns during sleep which mature with age. In addition a periodic oscillation of body temperature has been found with a cycle of approximately one hour. This oscillation may reflect sleep state and its further study may give an insight into control of infant thermoregulation and the integration of this control with that of breathing and the cardiovascular system.

Twenty-four-hour profiles of body temperature and plasma TSH in bipolar patients during depression and during remission and in normal control subjects.

The 24-hour patterns of body temperature and plasma thyrotropin (TSH) were measured in eight bipolar patients in both depressed and recovered (after 3 weeks of treatment) states and in eight normal control subjects. Clear circadian patterns were detected for both temperature and TSH. Nocturnal body temperature was increased and the nocturnal surge of TSH was blunted during depression; these abnormalities were corrected after recovery. The inverse relationship between changes in body temperature and TSH levels at night suggests that changes in thermoregulation may be responsible for the neuroendocrine disturbance and may play a role in the pathophysiology of depression.

[Analysis of "rising up mechanism" in months-old infants--determination of contact area and center of gravity by pedoscope].

The author studied how the rising up mechanism changed with the development of motor function in healthy infants. 1. The rising up mechanism can be evaluated from the body support pattern characteristic to each stage of posture development in supine and prone positions, the body support (contact) area and shift in the center of gravity. 2. The support patterns in supine position were classified into 4 types; S-I ("squid type", 2-4 mo), S-II ("platform type", 4-6 mo), S-III ("bell type", 7-10 mo), S-IV ("separate type"), and their characteristics were described. 3. The contact area in supine position gradually decreased as the support pattern changed from S-I (area ratio, approx. 2/3) to S-III (area ratio, 2/5). 4. The center of gravity in supine position was located at 10th thoracic vertebra at 2-4 mo, then rose with age until it was stabilized at 7th thoracic vertebra at 10 mo. 5. The support patterns in prone position were classified into 7 types; P-I ("protector type", 2-3 mo), P-II ("joint square and round type", 3-4 mo), P-III ("elongated oval type", 4 mo-first half of 5 mo), P-IV ("spindle type", 4 mo-latter half of 5 mo), P-V ("ginseng type", 5-6 mo), P-VI ("tetrapod type", 7-10 mo), P-VII ("oval type", 9 mo onward), and their characteristics were described. 6. The contact area in prone position gradually increased as the support pattern changed from P-I (area ratio, 3/5) to P-V (area ratio, 9/slightly over 10), and gradually decreased as it changed thereafter to P-VII (area ratio, 7/slightly under 10). 7. The center of gravity in prone position swung over a wide range. It was located at 12th thoracic vertebra at 2-3 mo, then ascended as far as 9th thoracic vertebra at 4 mo-first half of 5 mo, and descended thereafter to be stabilized at 2nd lumbar vertebra (level of navel) at around 10 mo. 8. Particular attention was paid to the development of rising up mechanism in the upper extremities in observation of changes in the support pattern.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Girls' recurrent and concurrent body dissatisfaction: correlates and consequences over 8 years.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examines the patterns of body dissatisfaction during adolescence in order to determine whether girls enter onto trajectories of body dissatisfaction that are associated with eating and depressive symptoms during adolescence and in young adulthood. METHOD: Body dissatisfaction was studied in 120 adolescent girls drawn from a normal population of students enrolled in private schools in a major metropolitan area. They were seen at three times over an 8-year period (mean ages = 14.3, 16.0, and 22.3). RESULTS: Recurrent body dissatisfaction during adolescence was associated with earlier pubertal maturation and elevated depressive and eating symptoms in young adulthood compared with girls who maintained positive body images during adolescence. Concurrent body dissatisfaction was also a correlate of greater depressed affect and eating symptoms at the time these girls experienced body dissatisfaction. DISCUSSION: Findings suggest that adolescent body dissatisfaction has consequences for affect in adulthood.

Conversion of a postocellar into an ocellar region as a transdetermination event occurring in adult ribbonworms.

Transections and grafting experiments performed in Lineus ruber rostral ends allowed us to generate ribbonworms with a duplication of the postocellar region combined with a deletion of the ocellar region. In such homeotically reconstructed animals, the syngeneic postocellar region transdifferentiated into an ocellar region with functional eyes while the allogeneic postocellar region underwent no transformation. In this case, transdifferentiation is a morphogenetic process leading to the restoration of the normal antero-posterior (A-P) axis pattern in adult worms. This regulative conversion of one adult body region into another, which so far has not been described in any bilaterian animal, is comparable with transdetermination of larval imaginal discs in Drosophila. Under certain conditions, Drosophila, wing imaginal disc cells express the eyeless master control gene and give rise to eyes. Here, we show in Lineus that the transposition of postocellar tissue into the ocellar location causes expression of the eyeless ortholog LsPax-6 and results in eye development. Our results in Lineus clearly suggest that transdifferentiation of adult body regions moved to a different position along the A-P axis is similar to transdetermination of the larval imaginal disc cells which are determined, but not yet differentiated.

Ultrasound biomicroscopic localization and evaluation of intraocular foreign bodies.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ultrasound biomicroscopic appearance of anterior segment foreign bodies under clinical and experimental conditions. METHODS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy was performed on 4 eyes of 4 patients referred for evaluation of anterior segment trauma and known or suspected intraocular foreign body. Imaging of wood, aluminum, concrete, and glass foreign bodies was performed in the anterior chamber of a human cadaver eye. RESULTS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy verified the location of a foreign body in two patients and identified occult foreign bodies in two others. Under clinical and experimental conditions, intraocular aluminum and glass produced comet tail artifacts. Under experimental conditions intraocular wood and concrete produced shadowing artifacts. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound biomicroscopy provides useful information in the evaluation of known and occult anterior segment foreign bodies. Ultrasound patterns of shadowing and comet tail may help differentiate foreign body materials.

Nodal antagonists regulate formation of the anteroposterior axis of the mouse embryo.

Patterning of the mouse embryo along the anteroposterior axis during body plan development requires migration of the distal visceral endoderm (DVE) towards the future anterior side by a mechanism that has remained unknown. Here we show that Nodal signalling and the regionalization of its antagonists are required for normal migration of the DVE. Whereas Nodal signalling provides the driving force for DVE migration by stimulating the proliferation of visceral endoderm cells, the antagonists Lefty1 and Cerl determine the direction of migration by asymmetrically inhibiting Nodal activity on the future anterior side.

Emerging aspects of amino acid metabolism. Where do we go from here?

The mechanisms are discussed by which the body maintains nitrogen balance and constancy of the amount and pattern of body proteins. A distinction is made between effectors, such as hormones, and regulators. Free amino acid concentrations, which are maintained remarkably constant, may play an important role. The key step in the regulation of urea production could be the stimulation of acetyl glutamate synthesis by amino acids entering the liver from the portal tract and the consequent activation of carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase I. Both protein synthesis and breakdown are regulated to some extent by amino acid supply. It is probable that the effects of diet are exerted mainly on the turnover of visceral proteins. Evidence is presented for the existence of a substantial pool of protein that turns over by lifetime kinetics. Such a pool could complicate the interpretation of data obtained in kinetic studies.

Changes in body size of elite high school football players: 1963-1989.

An examination of the heights and weights of members of the Parade Magazine's High School All-American Football Teams from 1963-1971 indicates no significant changes in the Body Mass Index of these elite athletes whereas an increased pattern in Body Mass Index was noted within this group from 1972-1989. The large increases in Body Mass Index after 1971 among the All-American high school football players raise interesting research questions; in particular, what portion of these gains can be attributed to improved nutrition and training techniques and what portion is the result of use of performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids?

The effect of a change in sleep-wakefulness timing, bright light and physical exercise interventions on 24-hour patterns of performance, mood and body temperature.

Experiments consisting of baseline, bright light and physical exercise studies were carried out to compare the effect of a 9-hour delay in sleep-wakefulness timing, and the effects of bright light and physical exercise interventions on 24-hour patterns of performance, mood and body temperature were examined. Each study comprised a 24-hour constant routine at the beginning followed by 3 night shifts and 24-hour constant routine at the end. Performance on tasks differing in cognitive load, mood and body temperature was measured during each constant routine and the interventions were applied during the night shifts. The 24-hour pattern of alertness and performance on the tasks with low cognitive load in post-treatment conditions followed the change in sleep-wakefulness timing while more cognitively loaded tasks tended to show a reverse trend when compared to pre-treatment conditions. There was a phase delay around 4 hours in circadian rhythms of body temperature in post-treatment conditions.

Measuring body image. Preliminary report on a new method.

A new, very simple and inexpensive METHOD FOR MEASUREING BODY IMage is described. A number of female patients with different somatic complaints were investigated. A specific patterning of body image related to the localization of somatic complaints is revealed. Anorexic and obese patients have an overall larger body image while the distortions in other conditions mostly go on the elevation in the vertical axis. Different aspects of this way of measuring body image are discussed, but the difference of the patterning is clear. This is a preliminary report on the new method.
