Hydrotechnical facilities within the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exclusion zone: impacts on hydrologic regime and plant growth patterns of floodplain water bodies of the Pripyat River.

As result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident the territory of the left-bank flood-lands of the Pripyat River have undergone intensive radionuclide contamination. With the purpose of preventing the washing away of radioactive substances, a complex of flood protection dams was constructed. This construction changed the hydrological regime of these territories and caused overgrowth by higher aquatic plants. Absence of a flowing mode of reservoirs, the stagnant phenomena during spring and seasonal high waters on the embank site have caused amplification of eutrophication processes, swamping and, connected with it, increase of water-marsh floristic complex in the structure of the vegetative cover.

Health transitions, fast and nasty: the case of Marshallese exposure to nuclear radiation.

The concept of health transitions assumes that health status improves with the introduction of western medicine. In this paper I demonstrate that the health of the people of Rongelap, Marshall Islands, has undergone serious damage as a result of nuclear testing, and that women in particular have suffered unduly. Exposure to nuclear radiation over a period of almost fifty years has been recognised by US authorities as a major contributory cause to the high rates of cancers and birth defects suffered by the Rongelap people. Women's reproduction has been severely affected, as evidenced by the many stillbirths and small stature of children born alive. Two generations have been exposed to both background radiation and to radiation ingested with the local foods on which they rely in the absence of other food sources. Clean up has commenced only after this and other communities sought compensation from the United States. The Rongelap people will live with the effects of radiation for generations to come. This transition to ongoing health problems is thus a negative outcome of modern health transition.

[Results of radiation monitoring in Moscow region over 1957-2005].

The article contains data on radiation situation in Moscow region, characteristics of overall beta-activity of ambient air, fall-out density, radionuclide contents of foods. Radionuclides content of environment appeared to decrease by 2-3 orders. Individual doses of internal irradiation for Moscow population are 100 times lower than the levels legally set for technogenic sources.

[Removing radioactive waste from enterprises and territories of Moscow and central region of Russia is a main goal of RADON Industrial Research Association].

The article contains brief historical data on foundation of radiation accident department in "RADON" Industrial Research Association, list and extent of the department works since 1995 on liquidation of various radioactive pollutions, decontamination methods applied, operative equipment and devices. The authors present methodic documents elaborated by the department specialists on decontamination of territories, compartments, etc.

[Radiation medicine and its significance to scientific and practical internist's activity].

The author of the article analyzes the significance of radiation medicine in the system of medical sciences, and stresses that radiation medicine and other fields of medicine have a lot of common points in their interests and the ways of development. All these points concern patients and problems of the evaluation of their health status in connection with diverse forms of radiation contacts. The author discusses the reliability of the sources of information and the forms of data presentation in the main publications addressed to certain groups of medical practitioners, researchers, and healthcare managers. The most significant results of radiation medicine, which may be useful to clinical medicine in general, are summarized in the article. The author annotates and assesses the targeting of manuals of radiobiology and radiation medicine issued in the resent years.

Chernobyl three years later: radiobiologic evaluation of a radioactive contamination.

On April 26, 1986, after partial fusion and confining loss by explosion of a nuclear reactor, 5 x 10(7) Ci of radionuclides escaped from Chernobyl. Three years later, maps show contamination by radioactive isotopes (formed during that period) of 21,000 km2 of Soviet soil, mainly in Byelorussia and part of the Ukraine. Decontamination measures have not been effective to date and 135,000 persons are being followed medically, taking into account the radioactive doses they received. An initial excess of morbidity from solid tumors has been noted much sooner than in the case of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but its significance is in dispute. Three years later, only the extent of the ecologic disaster caused by the radioactive contamination can be confirmed. It is too early to draw conclusions about radiation-induced carcinogenesis for the contaminated population.
