[Use of the Miragel acrylate sponge in severe eye burns caused by lime].

One of complications of burns of the eye caused by lime are the conjunctival adhesions. Presented are 2 patients who were treated by strips of Miragel acrylate sponge implanted temporarily into the conjunctival sac. After 1 year of observation and removal of the implants the conjunctival sac showed to be free of adhesions with a free motility of the eye.

[Clinical and histological evaluation of implantation of a microporous resin in periodontitis. Report of a case after 13 months].

A patient with adult periodontitis was treated for a 2 and 3-walled intrabony lesion on tooth n degrees 27. After scaling and root planing, the defect was surgically exposed and filled with a micro-porous resin. Following healing, there was a reduction in pocket depth as a result of gingival recession and a gain in probing attachment levels. This was confirmed 13 months post-operatively by clinical observation on re-entry. A biopsy of the treated site was taken at that time and undecalcified sections were studied by light microscopy and microradiography. New bone formation was noted inside and on the surface of the resin granules and at a distance from the particles. From a clinical and histologic point of view, the material seemed to be well tolerated by the host.

An immediate tooth root replacement: an implant cylinder and synthetic bone combination.

Tooth extractions in 22 cases were treated immediately with the simultaneous placement of a cylinder implant and injection of particulate synthetic bone around the neck of the implant and into the extraction socket surrounding the cylinder. Preliminary results indicate a success rate of 94.1% in those implant/synthetic bone combinations placed in function. The utilization of synthetic bone in combination with an implant creates the possibility of an immediate tooth root replacement. Besides replacing a "lost part" of the jaw immediately, this practice prevents the normal 40% to 60% bone loss that occurs in the two years post-extraction and improves both function and aesthetics for the patient. The synthetic bone, HTR Polymer, was used in combination with Steri-Oss cylinders.

Scleral reinforcement in rabbits using synthetic graft materials.

Because of disappointing results using homologous collagen for scleral reinforcement in the treatment of pathologic myopia in humans, we undertook a series of experiments in rabbits to test the mechanical properties and long-term biocompatibility of three different synthetic graft materials. Grafts made from two of these materials, Gore-Tex Soft Tissue Patch (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) and Miragel (poly[methyl acrylate-co-hydroxy-ethyl acrylate]), were easy to position about the globe. Both materials, however, were resistant to invasion by fibrovascular tissue. The third material, woven Dacron (polyethylene terephthalate), though more difficult to position, permitted extensive invasion of fibrovascular tissue, which made all parts of the graft firmly adherent to the globe. Our results indicate the long-term compatibility of all three of these materials when used as periscleral grafts in rabbits. However, our results also suggest that a woven material such as commercially available Dacron is a more suitable graft material for scleral reinforcement in humans than collagen, Miragel, or Gore-Tex.

Phagocytosis of synthetic particles in earthworms. Effect of antigenic stimulation and opsonization.

We examined the phagocytic activity of coelomocytes in earthworms Lumbricus terrestris. The synthetic polymeric HEMA particles were used in this study. The phagocytic capacity was increased after the protein administration or preincubation of HEMA particles with coelomic fluid. Furthermore, we isolated and characterized the proteins adsorbed on the surface of the particles which have opsonin-like properties.

[Comparison of the effectiveness of a mobile prosthesis created by the implantation of Hydron and cartilage after enucleation of the bulb].

The authors submit experience with the use of embedded mobile implants of the eyeball made from hydrogel of methylmetacrylate ("HYDRON" SPOFA) and from costal cartilage of different shapes. From the aspect of cosmetic effectiveness similar results were obtained with the implant "HYDRON" SPOFA and costal cartilge in the shape of a flat cylinder. Spherical implants "HYDRON" SPOFA were expelled in 16.8%, while flat cylindrical implants from costal cartilage were not expelled. Other shapes of implants from costal cartilage are less suitable. Both mentioned implants produce a satisfactory cosmetic effect and ensure a stable mobile base for cosmetic prostheses of the eye.

HEMA-particles phagocytosis of rat neutrophils.

A micromethod for testing of phagocytosis employing synthetic hydrophilic HEMA particles seems to be suitable for an examination of rat neutrophils. The normal phagocytic activity was 53.7 +/- 1.4%, phagocytic index 8.2 +/- 0.7, and the number of phagocytosing neutrophils was found to be 74 +/- 5.10(6)/l. Using HEMA particles, an experimentally induced depression of rat neutrophil phagocytosis after cyclophosphamide or benflurone was well detected and quantified.

Thrombogenicity of Teflon versus copolymer-coated guidewires: evaluation with scanning electron microscopy.

Utilizing the scanning electron microscope, we compared a new guidewire with copolymer coating with standard Teflon-coated, coiled-spring guidewires in both clinical and in vitro settings. Intense thrombogenicity was observed with the Teflon-coated guidewires with formed thrombi ranging in size from 50-100 microns. No formed thrombus was noted on any of the specimens of the copolymer guidewire, although isolated clumps of platelets and erythrocytes without fibrin strands were seen infrequently. We conclude that the copolymer guidewire is markedly less thrombogenic than Teflon-coated guidewires.

[Maxillofacial surgery for clefts].

This paper makes a wide review of the pathology that affects clefts, where maxillofacial surgery plays a very important role in the rehabilitation of these patients. Here we will analyse the alveolar ridge repair orthodontic and orthognathic surgery of sequelae, and the use of halogenic grafts, bone integrated, for the filling of clefts.

Attachment of human oral fibroblasts to a granular polymeric implant for hard tissue replacement.

Stereo and scanning electron microscopy were used to examine the morphology of cultured human oral fibroblasts attached to a porous, granular polymeric grafting material for hard tissue replacement (HTR Polymer). Fibroblast attachment was rapid, occurring within 10 minutes. Spreading was observed by 30 minutes. Cells attached to the surfaces of the granules by means of numerous cytoplasmic extensions. After incubation of fibroblasts with the granules for 48 hours, dense masses of parallel cells were present on the granule surfaces, with many cells extended to adjacent granules to form intergranular 'bridges'.

[Organ culture system for inner ears].

This paper reports an organ culture system using 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) hydrogel as a substrate to study the development of otocysts and statoacoustic ganglions of the mouse embryos in vitro. Twelfth and thirteenth gestation-day otocysts and statoacoustic ganglions with otic sensory epithelium and/or rhombencephalon developed well on the HEMA hydrogel. Normal morphogenesis of the inner ears and cytodifferentiation of their sensory epithelia were noted. Neurons of the statoacoustic ganglions differentiated well with outgrowth of nerve fibers. The new organ culture system can be used for cultivating otocysts extracorporeally, facilitating investigation of the effects of various biologically active extracellular proteins, glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans on statoacoustic ganglion-target tissue explants.

[Interactions of drugs with PHEMA hydrogel].

Hydration of polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (PHEMAs hydrogel with aqueous solutions of medicinal substance) renders it possible to deposit medicinal substances within the hydrogel. At the same time the concentration of the medicinal substances in the hydrogel is higher than their concentration in the hydrating solution. For the nonspecific interactions, which affect the deposition of medicinal substances in hydrogel, their surface tension is of principal importance. With decreasing surface tension the amount of medicinal substances in hydrogel is increased and simultaneously their release into the aqueous medium is decelerated. Interactions of six selected medicinal substances with PHEMA hydrogel were experimentally checked in the in vitro conditions.
