Flower-like terminal structures in racemose inflorescences: a tool in morphogenetic and evolutionary research.

Terminal flower-like structures (TFLS) occur in many angiosperms that possess indeterminate inflorescences such as spikes, racemes, or spadices. We describe and review TFLS in early-divergent angiosperms, especially the magnoliid order Piperales and the monocot order Alismatales, in which floral interpretation is controversial. Essentially similar TFLS occur in a wide range of taxa. Among magnoliids, they occur in some Piperales (Saururaceae and a few Piperaceae), but are absent from Chloranthaceae. Among monocots, they occur in some early-divergent families such as Acoraceae, Aponogetonaceae, Juncaginaceae, Potamogetonaceae, and Ruppiaceae. Similar TFLS with obscure organ identity are recorded in mutants of Arabidopsis. TFLS can often be interpreted as pseudanthia (close aggregations of reduced flowers), but in some cases the entire terminal pseudanthium is very similar to a true flower. In some cases, elaborated TFLS could therefore have given rise to what are normally termed 'true' (i.e. euanthial) flowers. Data presented here on terminal pseudanthia in Potamogeton and Ruppia support a pseudanthial evolutionary origin of reproductive units in the alismatid families Zannichelliaceae and Cymodoceaceae. Furthermore, in some alismatid species, either the entire inflorescence apex or an individual primordium at or near the inflorescence tip can be transformed into a filamentous or tubular (or intermediate) structure. A tubular structure enclosing stamens and carpels is described in Piper. This indicates that pseudanthium formation can provoke morphological novelties, perhaps due to new patterns of overlap between expression zones of regulatory genes and/or new spatial constraints.

Role of oxidative DNA damage in hydroxychavicol-induced genotoxicity.

Chewing betel quid has been linked to the development of oral cancer. In Taiwan, fresh Piper betle inflorescence is uniquely added to betel quid, and hydroxychavicol is the major phenolic components of P.betle inflorescence. In this study, we tested the mutagenic potential of hydroxychavicol in Salmonella typhimurium TA97, TA98, TA100 and TA102 with and without Aroclor-1254 induced S9 fraction. The results showed that hydroxychavicol was positive in S.typhimurium TA102 without metabolic activation. This increase in revertants was partially inhibited by catalase and superoxide dismutase. In Chinese hamster ovary (CHO-K1) cells, hydroxychavicol induced chromosome aberrations in a dose-dependent manner (10-50 microM) and the majority were chromosome-type aberrations. Hydroxychavicol also significantly increased the frequency of micronuclei in CHO-K1 cells up to 3-fold at a concentration of 40 microM. In addition, hydroxychavicol dose-dependently (0.1-20 microM) induced copper-dependent strand breaks in plasmid DNA. We further tested the oxidative DNA damage potential of hydroxychavicol by measuring 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) formation in CHO-K1 cells following an 18-h incubation and found that hydroxychavicol (6.25-100 microM) induced 8-OH-dG levels dose-dependently. The increase of 8-OH-dG formation was positively correlated (r = 0.79) with the hydroxychavicol-induced cytotoxicity. In conclusion, hydroxychavicol may exert its genotoxic potential through oxidative DNA damage.

Hydroxychavicol: a new anti-nitrosating phenolic compound from betel leaf.

Hydroxychavicol and eugenol are the phenolic compounds isolated from betel leaf (piper betel). The modulation of nitrosation of methylurea by sodium nitrite at pH 3.6 and 30 degrees C was studied. The formation of mutagenic N-nitrosomethylurea was monitored by checking the mutagenicity of reaction mixture in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA100 and TA1535 without S9 mix. Hydroxychavicol and eugenol exhibit dose-dependent suppression of nitrosation in vitro without affecting the survival of the bacteria. Pre- or post-treatment of bacterial cells from S. typhimurium strains TA100 and TA1535 with phenolics did not modify the mutagenicity of nitrosomethylurea. The blocking of hydroxy group(s) in the benzene ring by acetylation abolishes the anti-nitrosating activity of the molecule(s). The nitrosation inhibition by hydroxychavicol is through scavenging of nitrite ions in the media, thus making them non-available for the nitrosation of methylurea.

The structure and transcription start site of a major potato tuber protein gene.

We have isolated recombinant lambda clones containing intact major tuber protein (patatin) genes and flanking sequences from the commercial tetraploid variety Maris Piper. The gene is composed of seven exons and six introns, spread over 4 kb of DNA. Nuclease mapping defined the 5' end of the mRNA approximately 45 bp upstream of the initiation codon. The 5' end of the gene is preceeded by a canonical TATA box sequence. The three known patatin genes encode proteins of nearly identical Mr but very different isoelectric points. The sequence of the gene does not indicate a role for patatin as one of the globulin class of plant storage proteins.

Effects of litter from a tropical rainforest on tree seed germination and establishment under controlled conditions.

The effects of litter cover on the germination of seeds of three tropical rainforest, pioneer tree species (Cecropia obtusifolia, Heliocarpus appendiculatus and Piper auritum) was investigated. Germination of seeds of all tree species was partially or totally inhibited when the seeds were covered with litter, whereas uncovered seeds or seeds covered with paper instead of litter germinated. Seed size was directly correlated with the capacity of the germinated seeds to emerge through the litter. In soil experiments in the greenhouse, seedling emergence from the soil was inhibited by the presence of litter on the soil surface.

Interaction between halothane and the nonadrenergic, noncholinergic inhibitory system in porcine trachealis muscle.

BACKGROUND: Volatile anesthetics significantly affect cholinergic neural transmission in the airways and relax airway smooth muscle. Activation of the nonadrenergic, noncholinergic inhibitory neural pathway, which is thought to be mediated by nitric oxide, relaxes human and procine airways. The purpose of the current study was to determine in the isolated porcine trachealis muscle whether relaxation of airway smooth muscle by halothane is mediated in part by activation of the nonadrenergic, noncholinergic inhibitory system. METHODS: Isometric tension was measured in porcine trachealis muscle suspended in tissue baths in the presence of propranalol (10(-6) M). After stimulation of postsynaptic nicotinic cholinergic receptors with 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenyl-piper-azinium iodide (10(-4) M) to prevent contractile responses to subsequent electrical field stimulation, carbachol (3 x 10(-7) M) was added to increase tone. Nonadrenergic, noncholinergic relaxation responses to electrical field stimulation were then measured in the presence of inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase or L-arginine (the substrate for nitric oxide synthase), in the presence and absence halothane. RESULTS: Electrical field stimulation produced frequency-dependent relaxations that were attenuated by inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase (NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester [L-NAME] or NG-monomethyl-L-arginine, 10(-4) M). Pretreatment with L-arginine (10(-4) M) prevented the effect of L-NAME. Halothane (0.5% or 1.0%) neither enhanced nor attenuated nonadrenergic, noncholinergic relaxations in the presence of L-NAME, D-NAME, L-arginine, or D-arginine. CONCLUSIONS: Halothane, at concentrations < or = 1.0%, does not relax porcine airway smooth muscle in vitro by activating the nonadrenergic, noncholinergic inhibitory system.

Fatigue and quality of life among Chinese patients with hematologic malignancy after bone marrow transplantation.

Fatigue is reported to be a major symptom for many patients with cancer. However, little is known about this symptom among Chinese people who have cancer. A cross-sectional design was used to examine the intensity of fatigue in patients who underwent bone marrow transplantation for a hematologic malignancy, and to determine whether fatigue affected the quality of life in a Chinese sample (N = 157). The Revised Piper Fatigue Scale-Chinese Version was used to measure fatigue, and the Chinese version of the SF-36 Health Survey was used to measure quality of life. Overall, the subjects perceived a moderate level of fatigue (mean total fatigue score, 4.7 +/- 1.7). More than 15% reported experiencing a high level of fatigue. Subjects more likely to perceive a high level of fatigue were older, married, not employed, and on lower incomes. On post hoc tests, the group with a high level of fatigue scored significantly lower on quality-of-life domains than the other two groups (P <.05). The results may help nurses working with Chinese populations in identifying patients at risk for increased fatigue and in planning fatigue-relieving strategies.

Course of the fatigue dimension "activity level" and the interference of fatigue with daily living activities for patients with breast cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy.

The purpose of this study was to determine the course of the activity level, seen as a dimension of fatigue, as a function of chemotherapy within a breast cancer population receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. The second purpose of this study was to determine the course of the interference of fatigue, in general, with daily activities within a breast cancer population receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. In a prospective cohort study, a sample of 157 patients with breast cancer was interviewed, at the first, third, and fifth cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy as well as 4 and 12 weeks after the last cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy. The chemotherapy was administered with either a doxorubicin-containing schedule or cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil. These 2 groups were compared. The activity level was measured by the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory. A linear multilevel model was used to analyze the course. The revised Piper Fatigue Scale was used to examine the behavioral changes in the interference of fatigue with activities of daily living. A logistic multilevel model was used to analyze the course of this interference over time. The activity level seems to be rather stable during the treatment with chemotherapy. After the completion of chemotherapy, an improvement is observed. The activity levels reported at the first and the last measurement do not significantly differ. The course of the activity level is not affected by the type of chemotherapy regimen. Age, having children, and the stage of breast cancer turn out to be important determinants of the course of activity level. At all measurement occasions, women with a mastectomy were significantly more hampered in their activity level than women that had undergone a lumpectomy. The longer the duration of radiotherapy, the less active, and the longer the time interval between the last radiotherapy session and the measurement point, the more active patients were at that measurement point. A phenomenon not easy to explain is that the activity level in women who had received, in total, more chemotherapy treatments was significantly less diminished than those who had received fewer treatments. During the study period, in approximately 15% to 35% of the sample, fatigue interferes considerably with their daily living activities. Furthermore, the interference of fatigue with activities in daily life first increases after the start of chemotherapy and decreases after the completion of chemotherapy. Fatigue definitely affects the daily living activities of patients with breast cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. With this knowledge, healthcare providers can inform patients on what they can expect. Further research should include the trajectory preceding chemotherapy and a healthy control group.

A placebo-controlled study of Kava kava in generalized anxiety disorder.

We assessed the efficacy and safety of a botanical anxiolytic, Kava kava (Piper methysticum), in treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Thirty-seven adults with DSM-IV GAD were randomly assigned to 4 weeks of double-blind treatment with kava or a matching placebo. Weekly efficacy assessments [Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Self Assessment of Resilience and Anxiety (SARA)] and safety evaluations were conducted. Improvement was observed with both treatments but no differences were found in the principal analysis. Post-hoc analyses revealed significant differences based on baseline anxiety severity, whereby kava was superior on the SARA in low anxiety and placebo was superior on the HADS and SARA in high anxiety. Both treatments were well tolerated. Although kava was not superior to placebo, it would be premature to rule it out as efficacious in GAD.

Kava in generalized anxiety disorder: three placebo-controlled trials.

In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of kava kava (Piper methysticum) in generalized anxiety disorder. Data were analyzed from three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of kava, including one study with an active comparator (venlafaxine), in adult outpatients with DSM-IV generalized anxiety disorder. The pooled sample (n=64) included the following number of participants: kava, n=28; placebo, n=30; and venlafaxine, n=6. Given the comparability of the study designs, the data comparing kava and placebo were then pooled for further efficacy and safety analyses. No significant differences were observed between the treatment groups in any of the trials. In the pooled analyses, no effects were found for kava, while a significant effect in favor of placebo was observed in participants with higher anxiety at baseline. No evidence of hepatotoxicity was found with kava, and all of the treatments were well tolerated. Findings from these three controlled trials do not support the use of kava in DSM-IV generalized anxiety disorder.

Fatigue in HIV-infected men receiving investigational interleukin-2.

BACKGROUND: Although fatigue is an almost universal clinical complaint of people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, little has been done to study systematically the etiology, frequency, severity, response to, or management of HIV-related fatigue. In addition, HIV-related treatments may contribute to fatigue. OBJECTIVES: To describe the extent and severity of perceived fatigue in a cohort of HIV-infected men (N= 50) who, as participants in a randomized clinical trial, were randomized to receive or not to receive investigational interleukin-2 (IL-2). METHOD: A modified Piper Fatigue Scale was used to measure fatigue at baseline, at the end of 5 days of IL-2 therapy, 1 week later at home, and 1 month later for three consecutive cycles of IL-2 therapy. RESULTS: Against a variable background of baseline fatigue in all subjects, those receiving IL-2 reported a significant increase in their level of fatigue after receiving IL-2. Fatigue levels remained elevated 1 week later but returned to baseline by 1 month. Fatigue was related to the dose of IL-2 but not to the reported amount or quality of sleep. CONCLUSIONS: Against a background of fatigue related to HIV infection and its multiple manifestations and treatments, therapy with IL-2 dramatically increases the experience of fatigue. Although this increase is transient and tends to return to baseline by 1 month, during that month the patient's life function and quality may be severely affected.

Fatigue and fatigue-relieving strategies used by Hong Kong Chinese patients after hemopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue, a common symptom for patients after hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), can be relieved by specific strategies initiated by patients, provided the strategies are perceived as effective. OBJECTIVES: To explore the intensity of fatigue experienced by patients after HSCT for the treatment of hematologic malignancy, and to determine the effectiveness of self-initiated fatigue-relieving strategies. METHODS: A self-administered survey was mailed to 284 Hong Kong Chinese patients who had been hospitalized for HSCT. The patients were required to provide their demographic data and complete the questionnaires of the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale-Chinese Version and the Fatigue Relief Scale-Chinese Version. The data obtained then were analyzed to assess the patients' level of fatigue, the types of fatigue-relieving strategies used, and the effectiveness of the strategies. RESULTS: The participants (n = 157) returned the survey at a response rate of 70.9%. Most of the participants perceived a moderate level of fatigue (mean, 4.7 +/- 1.7). More than 15% reported that they experienced a high level of fatigue. Most of the participants (95%) chose to take some rest and reduce physical activities. The five most effective strategies were sleeping, napping, lying down, being massaged, and stopping current activity. DISCUSSION: Most of the participants perceived the level of fatigue after HSCT as moderate, although various self-initiated fatigue-relieving strategies were used.

Prevention and management of dance injuries.

Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere translation or abstraction from life; it is life itself (Ellis, 1923). Despite the "magic" that professional dancers display, they, too, are subject to physical limitations. As an old German proverb suggests, "If you want to dance, you must pay the piper." In a recent interview, Samuel Bennett of Ballet Chicago speculated that many dance injuries are the result of attempting to achieve a physical ideal that probably doesn't exist. The following is an overview of dance injuries, their prevention, and their treatment. The focus is on ballet.

The effect of acupressure with massage on fatigue and depression in patients with end-stage renal disease.

Fatigue and depressive mood are the most significant symptoms experienced by patients with end-stage renal disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of acupressure with massage in fatigue and depression in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving hemodialysis treatment. The study applied an experimental pretest and posttest design. Sixty-two hemodialysis patients participated in the study. Data were collected from two hemodialysis clinics in major hospitals in southern Taiwan. Following consent to the study, subjects were randomly assigned to an acupressure group or a control group. Patients in the acupressure group received acupoint massage for 12 minutes per day, three days per week, for four weeks. Subjects in the control group only received routine unit care. The measures included the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale, and Beck ' s Depression Inventory. Descriptive statistics, chi 2 tests, t-test and analyses of covariance were used for data analysis. The results indicate that subjects experienced a moderate level of fatigue. Nearly 65 % of hemodialysis patients had a depressed mood. ANCOVA results indicated that fatigue (F((1.54)) = 9.05, p =.004) and depression (F((1.54)) = 4.20, p =.045) among patients in the acupressure group showed significantly greater improvement than patients in the control group. The findings of this study provide an interventional model for nurses taking care of ESRD patients.

Calcium Deficiency of Dark-grown Seedlings of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Hypocotyl collapse in dark-grown seedlings of Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Pinto was due to calcium deficiency. There was no evidence of an associated pathogen. The number of seedlings with hypocotyl collapse decreased and the mean hypocotyl length increased when increasing levels of calcium (0-100 micrograms per gram) were supplied in an external nutrient solution to seedlings grown under sterile conditions. When seedlings were supplied with a complete nutrient solution, containing calcium at 100 micrograms per gram, but minus potassium, magnesium, sulfur, nitrogen, or phosphorus, occasional plants developed hypocotyl collapse symptoms; however, the lengths of hypocotyls varied little from those of controls grown in complete nutrient. When the calcium level in the deficient nutrient solutions was raised to 200 micrograms per gram, the number of plants with hypocotyl collapse was reduced markedly. With complete nutrient solution minus calcium, seedlings developed symptoms of calcium deficiency irrespective of seed size, i.e., irrespective of whether or not the seed contained a total calcium content that was low or relatively high.An increase in hypocotyl length in response to an external supply of calcium was obtained with five cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris L. and with one of Soja max Piper. A similar response to calcium was obtained for epicotyl growth of a cultivar of Vicia faba L., but not for a cultivar of Pisum sativum L.

Development of water conducting capacity in the root systems of young plants of corn and some other c4 grasses.

Development of the primary and early nodal roots was studied in Zea mays L., Zea mexicana (Schrad.) Reeves & Mangelsd., Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench., and Sorghum sudanese (Piper) Stapf. in relation to shoot development. In all the types studied all roots reached lengths of about 30 centimeters before the late metaxylem (LMX) was open, and young plants with total root lengths of around 100 centimeters had almost no open LMX. On average, corn seedlings with up to 36 square centimeters of leaf had no open LMX. The name "immature apices" is suggested for such long but not fully functional roots. In plants up to 50 days old a fairly constant proportion of less than half the total root length had open LMX. A pilot study of stomatal resistance on days of high evaporative demand suggested that young seedlings may show higher resistance than older plants in the afternoon. Estimates of longitudinal permeability of corn roots with only early metaxylem vessels open indicate very steep gradients of water potential would develop under such conditions.

A qualitative study to explore the concept of fatigue/tiredness in cancer patients and in healthy individuals.

Interest in fatigue research has grown since the finding that fatigue/tiredness is the most frequently reported symptom of cancer and its treatment. But even though several authors have tried to conceptualize fatigue (Piper & Rieger, 1989; Cimprich, 1992; Gibson & Edwards, 1985; Winningham, 1994; Irvine et al. 1994; Grandjean, 1970; et al.), its mechanisms are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was two-fold: i) to explore fatigue in cancer patients, inductively, and ii) to compare fatigue/tiredness experiences of healthy individuals with those of cancer patients to identify cancer-specific fatigue/tiredness and related concepts. A qualitative research strategy was adopted using a grounded-theory approach. The prospective study took place in the Oncology Department of the Kantonsspital St Gallen (Switzerland) with samples of 20 cancer patients and 20 healthy individuals. Unstructured, tape-recorded interviews were conducted to collect data. Transcripts of the interviews were analysed using content analysis and constant comparison. Although different themes emerged between the two groups, both fitted a classification system that categorized expression of fatigue/tiredness as physical, affective or cognitive. Physical signs were more frequent than affective and cognitive signs in both groups. For the cancer patients, fatigue involved decreased physical performance, extreme, unusual tiredness, weakness and an unusual need for rest, which was distinctly different for healthy persons. Affective and cognitive distress were also more prominent in cancer patients. Interestingly, the concept of malaise was not identified by either sample and not understood as an expression of fatigue by this German-speaking population. Linguistic differences in the description of fatigue/tiredness between healthy and ill individuals revealed different perceptions of the phenomenon. A step-like theory, involving nociception, perception and expression of tiredness, was put forward tentatively to explain the production of fatigue/tiredness. The emerging concepts break tiredness/fatigue into expressions of physical, affective and cognitive tiredness/fatigue. The experience is different between healthy individuals and cancer patients. The generalization of data needs precaution but the results of the study identify and clarify ideas that might form an important basis for further, controlled studies.

Effects of a relaxation breathing exercise on fatigue in haemopoietic stem cell transplantation patients.

AIM: Our purpose was to investigate the effect of a relaxation breathing exercise on fatigue in allogenic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation patients. BACKGROUND: Exercise is a promising approach in ameliorating the fatigue associated with cancer and its treatment. DESIGN: A randomized design with control, experimental groups being assessed pre- and postintervention. METHODS: Thirty-five patients were randomly selected, with 18 assigned to an exercise group and 17 to a control group. The exercise intervention lasted for 30 minutes every day for six weeks. It consisted of physical exercise combined with relaxation breathing exercise. Fatigue was measured by the revised version of the Piper Fatigue Scale. RESULTS: The exercise group had a greater decrease in fatigue than the control group. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that a relaxation breathing exercise would improve fatigue in allogenic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: A relaxation breathing exercise by a nurse can improve fatigue in allogenic haemopoietic stem cell transplantation patients.
