Fad diets and obesity--Part III: a rapid review of some of the more popular low-carbohydrate diets.
Low-carbohydrate books continue to be some of the biggest selling publications in the United States. However, what are the similarities and differences between some of the most popular books? This overview of what some of these books advocate or discourage is important to better facilitate the discussion between the health professional and the patient interested in some of these methods. What do we know about... nutrition and older people?
Nutrition is important to the health and functioning of elderly people. This paper summarises the evidence that many old people suffer from undernutrition and outlines the insidious effects of this form of malnutrition. It discusses the physiological and practical difficulties elderly people face in achieving good nutrition, and the challenge this poses to health workers. Given the UK's ageing population, undernutrition in older people is a significant public health issue as well as one that should concern all health professionals involved in individual or group contacts with elderly clients.

A liberalized approach to diets for diabetes in long term care.
These guidelines allow for liberalization of the dietary treatment of diabetes in type 2 diabetics in long term care facilities. The care team should work together to promote specific policies and protocols in the facility to address how individual type 2 diabetics will be assessed, and which diets will be offered as an adjunct to treatment. Careful monitoring of blood glucose levels, medications and response to treatment may allow for more liberalization of the diet. Diet liberalization can help to promote better health and improved quality of life for our elderly residents.

Behavior and lifestyle: approaches to treatment of obesity.
The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults and children demonstrates a steadily growing epidemic. This rising rate of obesity is associated with obesity related comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, some cancers, joint disease, and particularly, type 2 diabetes. Modest weight loss (5% to 10% of total body weight) through lifestyle intervention approaches has been found to have a beneficial effect on comorbid conditions, particularly hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Effective behavioral treatment of obesity involves modification of eating and physical activity patterns to yield negative energy balance. Research studies have found that interventions that combine a low-calorie diet, increased physical activity, and behavior therapy are most effective for weight loss and maintenance. Furthermore, extended length of treatment contact, weight loss satisfaction, and social support may promote positive long-term outcomes in obese adults and children.
The nurse's role in promoting weight loss and encouraging healthier lifestyles.
The increasing incidence of obesity in the UK has prompted a range of initiatives to raise awareness of the problem. In view of the well-known links between obesity and chronic disease, the focus is now on addressing the issue as part of patient care by advising adults and children on weight management and changes in diet and exercise.
