Intracranial arteriovenous malformations. Observations after experience with computerised tomography.

Thirty-six patients with angiographically confirmed intracranial arteriovenous malformations have had computerised tomographic scans performed as part of their investigation. This study demonstrates the incidence of haematoma formation after haemorrhage, the frequency of calcification not visible on plain radiographs, and describes the possible causes for a complicating hydrocephalus. Further information has been gained from the intravenous injection of sodium iothalamate (Conray 420), with comparison of the scans taken before and after the injection.

Measurement of regional cerebral blood volume by computerized axial tomography.

Computerized tomography has been used for the estimation of regional cerebral blood volume in a group of 18 patients. Sodium iothalamate was injected intravenously (1.75 ml/kg) to increase the absorption of x-rays in the cerebral circulation. A mean value of 5.7 ml/100 g was found for the cortex and 5.1 for tha thalamus.

Contrast-enhanced lesions on computerised tomography in multiple sclerosis.

Two patients are described in whom computerised tomography revealed contrast-enhanced lesions in the early stages of multiple sclerosis. Such lesions may be differentiated from tumours by their transient nature, lack of space-occupying effect, and localisation in the white matter. Contrast enhancement in demyelinating disease is probably related to local breakdown of the blood-brain barrier.
