[Plastic surgery for losses of facial substance by cheek rotation].

New diversified plastic surgery methods have been introduced into practice in the last decades, aimed at repairing the loss of facial tissues involving the upper lip (with or without co-involvement of the lateral parts of the nose), and the lower eyelid area, that cannot be repaired by flaps prepared in the surrounding regions. In view of avoiding the disadvantages of 2- or 3-stage techniques the authors have re-evaluated the method introduced by Esser in 1918 for plastic repair of the facial tissues by rotation of the cheek, which is economical, efficient, rapid, and elegant, providing fully satisfactory esthetic results. Two cases are presented, one with loss of facial tissue following removal of an achromic recidivating melanoma, and another one following removal of a recidivating baso-cellular carcinoma, in which this method was employed with excellent results.

Mycobacterium infection in a gray-cheeked parakeet.

A gray-cheeked parakeet, approximately 3 years of age, was submitted for necropsy. Clinical signs included diarrhea, decreased feed consumption, fluffing of feathers, shivering, weight loss, and limping. Necropsy revealed enlargement and pale discoloration of the spleen and intestines. The liver contained multifocal pale foci. Granulomas, some of which had necrotic centers, were present along the subserosa of the intestinal tract. Microscopic examination revealed diffuse granulomatous splenitis, enteritis, and multifocal granulomatous hepatitis. Numerous acid-fast bacteria were demonstrated in the spleen, liver, and intestine.

The Golgi apparatus during epithelial differentiation: a quantitative morphological study of maturation compartments in keratinised epithelium from hamster cheek pouch mucosa.

Stereological and other morphometric techniques have been used to investigate the quantitative morphological characteristics of the Golgi complex in defined basal, spinous and granular layers of hamster cheek pouch epithelium. As the cell migrates between basal and granular layers, there are reductions in the volumetric, numerical and surface densities of Golgi per unit volume of epithelial cell cytoplasm. When these density estimates are related to the average cell, the average granular cell has a higher number of Golgi complexes with a greater cisternal and associated vesicular volume and membrane surface area than the average basal cell. Both the volume and surface area of individual Golgi systems are smaller in the average granular cell when compared with the average basal cell. We suggest that these structural alterations are associated with the increased secretory activity of spinous and granular cells which is primarily effected by the production of membrane-coating granules, organelles which are probably responsible for producing the intercellular permeability barrier. These changes are also accompanied by increases in the amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum and plasma membrane, supporting the proposition that the epithelial cell becomes increasingly metabolically active as it differentiates.

Cholangiocarcinoma in a 4-month-old double yellow-cheeked Amazon parrot (Amazona autumnalis).

A cholangiocarcinoma was diagnosed in a 4-month-old double yellow-cheeked Amazon parrot (Amazona autumnalis). Histologically, neoplastic cells effaced hepatocellular architecture. Ultrastructurally, variably dilated bile ductules were lined by simple cuboidal to low columnar ciliated epithelial cells with sparse cellular organelles and prominent junctional complexes. Elongated single cilia arising from basal bodies in the apical cytoplasm were occasionally evident. The presence of such a neoplasm in a 4-month-old parrot is extremely unusual.

[An ultrastructural stereological analysis of the cardiomyocytes in a hibernating rodent (the red-cheeked suslik Citellus erythrogenys, Brandt)].

The quantitative morphological study of cardiomyocytes in heterothermic animals (red-cheeked susliks Citellus erythrogenys Br.) was quantitatively morphologically studied. The features of spatial ultrastructural cardiomyocyte reorganization in hibernating susliks were shown to manifest in pronounced increase of volume and surface densities of sarcoplasmic reticulum and relative volume of lipid droplets.

The perception of vocal signals by blue monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Old World forest primates may need to signal vocally over long distances in noisy habitats. Perceptual experiments focused on the audibility of signals in noise were conducted in the laboratory using standard psychoacoustical methods. Six human listeners, two blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis), and two grey-cheeked mangabeys (Cercocebus albigena) served as subjects. Based upon measurements of East African rain forests (Brown and Waser 1984) testing was conducted in the presence of simulated rain forest noise, or in the quiet. Signals consisted of pure tones 2-seconds in duration ranging in frequency from 63 Hz to 32 kHz, or recordings of vocalizations. Test vocal signals for monkey subjects were the blue monkey chirp, pyow, trill, ka, ka-train, grunt and boom calls; the mangabey chorused grunt, soft grunt, gobble and staccato bark calls. Human listeners were tested with the consonant-vowel stop consonants: ba, pa, da, ta, ga, ka; the two-syllable words: baseball, lifeguard, vessel and leisure; and the sentence "Can you hear me?" The results showed that mangabeys exhibit an audibility function nearly indistinguishable from that for blue monkeys (Brown and Waser 1984). Compared to terrestrial open country monkeys, these arboreal rain forest monkeys possess enhanced low-frequency sensitivity which coupled with mechanisms specialized for low-frequency vocal production may function as a long-distance communication system. Testing with vocalizations in the presence of a masking noise revealed that monkey calls were about 10 dB more audible in noise than were human speech sounds. No differences were found between the audibility of graded or discrete calls. Testing for species-specific abilities was conducted with a subsample of six calls. While differences were not found when testing was conducted in the quiet, in the presence of forest noise, monkeys were about 3.4 dB more sensitive to the calls of conspecifics than to the calls of sympatric species. These findings support the idea that differences in the audibility of the vocalizations of related species is principally due to acoustical differences between signals, yet more subtle receptive specializations may have evolved as well. Hence selection may have acted on both receptive and productive mechanisms to promote vocal communication under adverse environmental conditions.

"Madame Butterfly" procedure: combined cheek and lateral canthal suspension procedure for post-blepharoplasty, "round eye," and lower eyelid retraction.

The most common complication of lower eyelid blepharoplasty is eyelid retraction ("scleral show") of the lateral one-third of the lower eyelid, with associated rounding and inferior displacement of the lateral canthus. A procedure in which the middle lamellar cicatrix is lysed, the lateral canthus reconstructed, and the cheek elevated to provide additional vertical anterior lamellar skin is described. Skin grafting is often aesthetically poor in the lower eyelid and is unacceptable in the upper eyelid. This new procedure may be used to elevate the lower eyelid rather than lower the upper eyelid in cases of post-blepharoplasty lagophthalmos with exposure keratopathy. Thus, the procedure offers cosmetic and functional repair, without the use of skin grafts, for the patient who would normally need upper and lower eyelid skin grafting.

Mitotic index, influx and mean transit time in the hamster cheek pouch epithelium, a partially synchronized cell system. Presentation of a mathematical model based on a non-stationary probability density function for the transit time in a compartment.

Mitotic activity was followed in the epithelium of the hamster cheek pouch for about 12 hr in two experiments under different conditions of noise and light intensity. A mathematical model based on a non-stationary probability density function for the transit time through mitosis was developed, making an analysis of this partially synchronized cell system possible. The most important result of the two experiments is the indication of a non-stationary mean transit time for cells in mitosis. In the first experiment (70 dB, 103 lux), which produced high mitotic indices (maximum 2.0%), the influx changed from 0. to 0.9%/hr (mean of 7-hourly determinations: 0.4%/hr), and the mean transit time from 1.9 to 5.5 hr. In the second experiment (70 dB, 265 lux), which had a lower level of MI (maximum 1.3%), the influx changed from 0 to 1.8%/hr (mean of 13-hourly determinations: 0.4%/hr), and the mean transit time from 0.3 to 3.3 hr. It was difficult to say precisely whether the variation in influx or in mean transit time was the main factor in the increase and decrease of MI. The data could not be simulated with a stationary mean transit time. It is suggested that changes in MI due to different external circumstances are mainly the result of variation in the mean transit time.

[Stereological analysis of the ultrastructural organization of the cardiomyocytes in the red-cheeked suslik in different seasons of the year].

The myocardium of red-cheeked sousliks was studied at different seasons with the use of stereological analysis. The volume and surface densities of the myofibrils, mitochondria, T system, sarcoplasmic reticulum as well as the surface-volume ratios of the main organelles were measured. Pronounced seasonal changes in physiological activity of the heterothermal animals were accompanied by marked reorganization of the spatial ultrastructure of the cardiomyocytes. The seasonal regression of the heart weight and diminution of the cardiomyocyte diameter were recorded during hibernation. The authors believe that the increased volume ratio of the cytoplasmic organelles to the myofibrils forms the basis for a rapid adaptive reaction of the heart during hibernation and waking up.

Facial squamous carcinoma with parotid metastasis--closure with cheek-neck rotation.

Because squamous carcinoma of the face is usually recognized and treated early, regional metastasis occurs infrequently. However, due to neglect or initial treatment failure, aggressive lesions of the temporal-zygomatic area may metastasize to parotid nodes. These tumors are most effectively treated with en bloc primary excision and regional node dissection, which includes superficial parotidectomy with or without neck dissection. Closure of such large defects presents a technical challenge and often skin grafts are utilized. This report deals with our experience with a large lateral facial squamous carcinoma with parotid metastasis. Surgical options and a method of primary closure with cheek-neck rotation flap are discussed. Controversy exists regarding elective neck dissection and/or postoperative irradiation. Postoperative irradiation is advised for pathological evidence of perineural invasion, multiple positive nodes, extranodal spread, or questionable margins.

Granulomatous reaction in the hamster cheek pouch induced by killed Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

We have studied the role of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis viability in the morphology of paracoccidioidomycotic granulomas in the hamster cheek pouch, an immunologically privileged site. Naive (N = 75) and previously sensitized (N = 50) two-month old male hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were inoculated into the pouch with 5 x 10(5) live or heat- or formalin-killed fungi. Previously sensitized animals presented a positive footpad test and immunodiffusion demonstrable antibodies (titer 1/32), at the time of sacrifice; naive animals were always negative for those immunological tests. The histological results showed that, like viable P. brasiliensis, killed fungi evoke typical epithelioid granulomas in 100% of animals, even in the absence of immunodiffusion or footpad test detectable immune response. The granulomas elicited by killed fungi were devoid of giant cells or a mononuclear cell halo, suggesting that live proliferating fungi or their products may be involved in these events.

An immunohistochemical study on the gastrointestinal endocrine cells of three honeyeaters: singing honeyeater (Meliphaga virescens), spiny-cheeked honeyeater (Acanthogenys rufogularis) and brown honeyeater (Lichmera indistincta).

The gastrointestinal endocrine cells of the singing honeyeater (Meliphaga virescens), spiny-cheeked honeyeater (Acanthogenys rufogularis) and brown honeyeater (Lichmera indistincta) were studied immunohistochemically with special reference to their degree of dependency upon nectar. The nine types of immunoreactive endocrine cells were detected in their gastrointestinal mucosa. Coexistence of motilin and serotonin in the same cells was confirmed in the pyloric region. In the duodenum and jejunum, a few peptide tyrosin tyrosin (PYY)-immunoreactive cells were detected. The clear difference in the distribution and frequency of the gastrointestinal endocrine cells among three types of honeyeaters, which differ in the degree of dependency upon the nectar, could not be confirmed. However, some differences were found that serotonin-, somatostatin- and gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)-immunoreactive cells in the gizzard, gastrin-immunoreactive cells in the duodenum and jejunum, enteroglucagon-immunoreactive cells in the caeca and in the colon, and pancreatic glucagon-immunoreactive cells in the ileum of brown honeyeaters were more numerous (p < 0.05) than other two species.

Adult-type of rhabdomyoma of the cheek. A case report with emphasis on the histological and immunohistochemical features.

A case of adult-type rhabdomyoma of the cheek is reported. The tumor was composed of cells presenting striated muscle differentiation, which was confirmed immunohistochemically by the positive reaction with alpha 1-sarcomeric actin demonstrating the cytoplasmic cross striations. A careful evaluation of the light microscopic features of this rare tumor, as well as the histochemical and immunohistochemical characteristics of the tumor cells would greatly help the differential diagnosis.

[Submucous implantation with pedicel auto-flap of cheek muscle for atrophic rhinitis].

This paper described a method of submucous implantation for 32 patients with atrophic rhinitis by using pedicel auto-flap of cheek muscle and maxillary periosteum of piriform aperture. The results indicated that the total effective rate was 100% and the evident effective rate was 90.6% after 1 to 3 year postoperatively. The cilia beat of nasal mucosa, blood flow, osmotaxis of blood vessel. P substance and the resistance of nasal airflow were all improved. The flap survived and grew well due to autogenuous graft tissues and its original blood supply. No complications have been found. The clinical efficiency was obvious for a short term and was stable for a long term.

[Cheek-commissuro-labial reconstruction using a fascia superficialis temporalis composite island flap. Apropos of a clinical case].

Management of full thickness defects of cheek and lips area is a challenge with both aesthetic and functional aims. Many surgical procedures can be proposed. A composite island temporal flap gathering fascia superficialis temporalis, an heary portion and a beardless skin paddle is a very interesting alternative. Surgical procedure and results are explained, concerning a gun shot injury clinical case.

Circadian variation of DNA replication in hamster cheek pouch epithelium analysed by tritiated thymidine labelling, flow sorting and autoradiography: no resting S phase cells in the normal epithelium.

In the normal hamster cheek pouch epithelium, cell proliferation takes place with a pronounced circadian rhythm. We tested our previous hypothesis that all cells having S phase DNA content are actively synthesizing DNA and thus participating in the daily cohort of proliferating cells. We found no evidence of resting S phase cells in the normal epithelium. Using labelling with tritiated thymidine followed by fluorescence activated cell sorting according to DNA content and by autoradiography of the sorted nuclei, it was demonstrated that during the 24 h period almost all cells with mid S phase DNA content were active in DNA synthesis.

[Detection of cell culture tumorigenic activity by heterotransplantation into hamster cheek pouch tissue using immunodepressants].

Different strains of diploid cells were studied experimentally in Syrian hamsters by heterotransplantation into cheek pouch tissue for detection of their tumorigenic activity. Cortisone and antilymphocyte serum were used as immunodepressors. The results showed that the use of antilymphocyte serum increased considerably the sensitivity of the method of determination of cell culture tumorigenic activity.
