Role of male scent glands in improving poison bait acceptance in female rats, Rattus norvegicus.

The poison (Zn3P2) bait mixed with preputial gland and cheek gland extract was highly effective as compared to poison bait mixed without the scent gland extract, in increasing the food consumption and mortality rate in rats. Among these two scent glands, preputial gland extract was more effective than cheek gland extract in increasing the bait acceptance. The scent gland extract mixed with poison bait was capable of improving the poison bait acceptance. A 10% concentration of scent gland extract was more effective than 5% concentration in acceptance of poison bait. The results suggest efficacy of scent gland in improving the poison bait acceptance.

Immune mechanisms contributing to spontaneous acceptance of liver transplants in rodents and their potential for clinical transplantation.

The fate of organ transplants between unrelated individuals of the same species is almost always rejection unless the recipient receives immunosuppressive drugs. Liver transplants are an exception, as in a number of animal models they are often accepted without requiring any treatment. Several mechanisms have been proposed for liver transplant acceptance, including: the vascular structure of the liver, which allows interaction between naïve T cells and liver parenchymal cells; the atypical leukocyte populations of the liver-particularly immature dendritic cells; neutralization of rejection by donor soluble MHC antigen; establishment of microchimerism by donor hematopoietic stem cells; and death by "neglect" of recipient T cells in response to inappropriate activation by donor liver leukocytes. Although all these mechanisms may contribute to liver acceptance to some degree, an important finding is that liver acceptance appears to be mainly due to donor leukocytes transplanted with the liver. In combination with the observation of rapid T cell activation followed by their death after liver transplantation, these findings have identified a prominent role for donor leukocyte-induced deletion of liver-reactive T cells. These findings suggest novel ways to explore improved treatment for transplant patients, including the administration of donor leukocytes at the time of transplantation and the delay of some components of immunosuppressive-drug induction therapy.

Acceptability trials with ready to eat foods in a rural area.

Acceptability trials with three types of recipes was carried out on 184 young preschoolers (6 months to 35 months) residing in four nearby villages around Hyderabad. Results of this study indicated that among the 3 types of supplementary foods (Sweet Ready Mix, Sweet Ready Mix with Amylase and Therapeutic food tested here, the Therapeutic food was more acceptable (taste, smell and bulk) to the children. The criteria for acceptability of the food was defined as the ability of 75% of the children to consume 75% or more of the food supplement at one sitting for 70% of the days of the trial. The Therapeutic food, a calorie dense supplement, met the above criteria. The acceptability was poor for the Sweet Ready Mix and Sweet Ready Mix with Amylase (< 4%) mainly due to quantity rather than taste and smell as revealed by the mothers. The mothers of the children also liked the taste and smell of the therapeutic food better. Consumption of the therapeutic food caused minimal side effects like diarrhea and vomiting when compared to side effects after eating Sweet Ready Mix and Sweet Ready Mix with Amylase in children.

The influence of listener's gender on the acceptance of background noise.

The acceptance of background noise can be assessed by having participants select the maximum background noise level (BNL) to which they are willing to listen while following speech at their most comfortable listening level (MCL). The difference between the selected BNL and MCL is the acceptable noise level (ANL). Preliminary investigations have revealed large between-participant ANL differences that are not related to age, hearing status, preference for background noise, or uncomfortable listening level. This study investigated listener's gender as a possible factor contributing to these between-participant differences. Comfortable listening levels for speech and accepted levels of speech-babble background noise were obtained binaurally, via the sound field, from 50 (25 male, 25 female) young, acoustically naive adults with normal hearing sensitivity. Results indicate that, although males had higher comfortable listening levels and accepted higher levels of background noise than females, ANL values were not different between males and females.

Behavioral genetics: scientific and social acceptance.

Human behavioral genetics can be broadly defined as the attempt to characterize and define the genetic or hereditary basis for human behavior. Examination of the history of these scientific enterprises reveals episodes of controversy, and an apparent distinction between scientific and social acceptance of the genetic nature of such complex behaviors. This essay will review the history and methodology of behavioral genetics research, including a more detailed look at case histories involving behavioral genetic research for aggressive behavior and alcoholism. It includes a discussion of the scientific versus social qualities of the acceptance of behavioral genetics research, as well as the development of a general model for scientific acceptance involving the researchers, the scientific literature, the scientific peer group, the mainstream media, and the public at large. From this model follows a discussion of the means and complications by which behavioral genetics research may be accepted by society, and an analysis of how future studies might be conducted.

4-1BB gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from orthotopic liver transplant recipients with graft acceptance.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the gene expression of 4-1BB in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and the possible significance of the 4-1BB pathway after clinical orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). METHODS: 4-1BB mRNA levels in PBMCs from 22 OLT patients were analyzed by RT-PCR. 4-1BB protein expressed on the surface of CD(4)(+) and CD(8)(+) T cells were detected by flow cytometry, and visualized with direct immunofluorescence and confocal fluorescence microscopy. Patients with primary liver cancer (PLC) and healthy volunteers served as controls. Six cases of recently performed liver transplantation were also observed in this study. RESULTS: 4-1BB mRNA was detected in PBMCs from both liver transplant patients with long-term graft acceptance (22 cases) and from transplant patients on day 1 to day 3 post-transplantation (6 cases), but was not found in PBMCs from transplant patients on day 7 to day 30 post-transplantation (6 cases). 4-1BB mRNA was also not found in samples from 8 of the healthy controls and 7 of the PLC patients, though very low expression was detected in the other 4 healthy volunteers and 6 PLC patients. Simultaneously, 4-1BB protein was expressed at nearly undetectable levels on CD(4)(+) and CD(8)(+) T cells from healthy controls, PLC patients, as well as OLT patients within the first month post-transplantation (6 cases). However, 4-1BB expression was found on the surface of CD(4)(+) and CD(8)(+) T cells from liver transplant patients with long-term graft acceptance. Direct immunofluorescent staining and confocal fluorescence microscopy clearly revealed evidence of 4-1BB protein on cell membranes of CD(4)(+) and CD(8)(+) T cells from liver transplant patients with long-term graft acceptance. Simultaneously, a significantly higher percentage of CD(3)(+) CD(25)(+) T cells were found in liver transplant patients with long-term graft acceptance group as compared with the healthy control group (P < 0.05). The expression of 4-1BB protein on T cells did not correlate with the survival time of OLT patients postoperation. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that although patients remain in stable condition after liver transplantation under the treatment of immunosuppressants, activated T cells are present to some extent and 4-1BB protein may be involved in this process. Effector T-cells can exert permanent immunoresponses against grafts under these circumstances. Therefore, we conclude that a new immune response balance is established under the combination of both treatment with immunosuppressants and natural immune responses against alloantigens. Manipulation of the 4-1BB/4-1BBL pathway may provide a therapeutic technique for prolonging graft survival.

Differing faculty and housestaff acceptance of an electronic health record one year after implementation.

In order to determine whether differences exist between housestaff and faculty physician acceptance of an electronic health record system, we conducted a written survey of attitudes towards new electronic medical record at the University of Illinois at Chicago. We surveyed 330 faculty and housestaff physicians. User acceptance of the EHR was high for both faculty physicians and housestaff. 88.0% of the housestaff and 64.7% of the faculty preferred the EHR over a paper record. Although both housestaff and faculty acceptance of an EHR was high, housestaff showed greater approval ratings than faculty. Central to acceptance of an EHR is conservation of physician time including improving system speed, reducing time spent waiting for a computer to become available, and minimizing time spent documenting care

[Efficacy, safety and acceptability of precipitated sulphur petrolatum for topical treatment of scabies at the city of Coro, Falcon State, Venezuela].

INTRODUCTION: In spite of sulphur ointment has been applied during centuries in the treatment of human scabies, nevertheless, its clinical efficacy, as well as safety and acceptability has not been clearly demonstrated. AIM: During September 2001-March 2002, attempts have been made to assess the efficacy, safety and acceptability of a mixture of precipitated sulphur 2-8% petrolatum for the treatment of 40 ambulatory consultant patients, of all age groups, including children under 1 year of age, pregnant and lacting women, with suggestive sarcoptic cutaneous lesions from Coro, Falcon State, Venezuela. METHODS: The diagnosis was made by clinical examination and microscope observation (KOH 10%) of scrapings of cutaneous lesions. The acceptability were quantified using visual analogue scale (VAS) and other two behavioral (BS) scores. Enrolled patients applied ointment 1 daily dose for 6 days, 1 week rest, repeated for 2 days, thoroughly washing off with neutral soap and applying lubricant cream. Differential schedule concentrations were: 2% for children below 2 years and up to 6 years old; 2-5% for scholars, adolescents and pregnant; 5-8% for adults and elderly; being exposition time to the ointment of 3 hours for children under 2 years old, and overnight for reminding age-groups. Efficacy was evaluated 7-30 days post-treatment by clinic observation, quantification and scraping of the sarcoptic lesions. A safety assessment was based on adverse effects reported by patients or observed by the physician. RESULTS: 38 (95%) out of 40 patients were clinical and ectoparasitologically cured 7-30 days after cessation of ointment application, with no relapses or relevant adverse effects, producing a significant (t = 9.26; p < 0.0001) decrease at the end of evaluation period in the median values of number of lesions (28.08-9.18 vs. 0.00). Only 2 (5%) patients developed a mild dermatitis reaction, and subsequently no completed the follow up. CONCLUSION: It's proven highly therapeutic effectiveness as well as widely availability, low costs with no serious side effects and satisfactory acceptability (X; VAS = 1.14 +/- 1.67; BS: 0.25 +/- 0.38, 0.53 +/- 0.43), allows us to recommend the topical use of the ointment sulfur-petrolatum for the treatment of human scabies, especially in children under 5 years of age, pregnant and lactating women and elderly, in which other drugs are not recommended by its potential toxicity.

Acceptance of distance learning by radiologic technologists.

OBJECTIVE: A national survey of 1300 registered radiologic technologists was conducted to determine acceptance of distance learning for continuing education, advanced certification and higher academic degree requirements. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Differences between the demographic data and reported acceptance levels were compared using the chi2 (chi-square) test of significance. RESULTS: None of the demographic variables indicated statistically significant differences in acceptance levels. T tests were performed for continuous variables with no significant differences. A rank-order analysis was performed to determine the most preferred method of distance learning. Internet, correspondence and video tape courses were reported to be the most preferred methods for distance learning. CONCLUSION: Study results suggest a high level of acceptance of distance learning for continuing education (95%), advanced certification (93%) and higher academic degree requirements (87%).

[Stroke-specific quality of life scale (ECVI-38): an evaluation of its acceptance, reliability and validity].

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is currently essential in the evaluation of stroke-related clinical trials. Existing stroke-specific scales were developed in English-speaking countries and most of them do not satisfy the necessary standards of validity. In consequence, the first Spanish-language scale for evaluating the quality of life (QL) of stroke survivors was developed (ECVI-38). In this work the psychometric properties of this summary measure were assessed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A group of 63 stroke patients were studied, between 2 months and 2 years after the event, to evaluate the acceptability, reliability and validity of the ECVI-38, using standardised psychometric methods. RESULTS: The ECVI-38 proved to have an important degree of acceptability; only three elements showed a high percentage of data loss due to the age of the patients in the sample; the floor and ceiling effects were within the accepted limits. The scale displayed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.79-0.97, correlations between elements 0.53-0.90) and good stability in the test-retest trial (intraclass correlation coefficients 0.89-0.98). As regards its construct validity (total correlations among correct domains, convergent r = 0.57-0.90, discriminating r = 0.19-0.39), the results were very good, as were the findings of the studies of validity vs. external criteria (difference between groups with a known neurological status, and convergence validity). CONCLUSIONS: The ECVI-38 is a measure that is acceptable, reliable and valid for evaluating QL in patients who have had a stroke. Further tests are needed to evaluate its sensitivity and to explore its value in both clinical and research practice.

Are personal digital assistants an acceptable incentive for rural community-based preceptors?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study's objective was to evaluate the acceptability, effect, and use of handheld computers (also known as personal digital assistants or PDAs) as a reward for undergraduate rural community-based family medicine preceptors. METHODS: All rural, undergraduate family physician teachers who accepted an undergraduate student for a 1-month placement were offered the choice between a PDA that carried medical software or a monetary payment of an equivalent value. Approximately 1 year later, different surveys were sent to both groups of preceptors to collect data on their use of PDAs and computer technology. RESULTS: The most commonly reported reason for choosing a PDA in lieu of payment was that it provided a good opportunity to learn about PDA technology. Of those who accepted a PDA, however, 10% had not yet used it, and another 44% of recipients had difficulty in getting started using the PDA. There were more reported problems with the software than the hardware. When surveyed 1 year later, those who received a PDA and were still using it reported satisfaction with the medical software, ranging from 31% for Epocrates qid to 71% for the 5-Minute Medical Consult. More than 90% of those using their PDA 1 year later reported that they used it in clinical settings, with 68% feeling their PDA had some or a significant effect on patient care. CONCLUSIONS: Rural family physicians appeared to find PDAs an acceptable reward for teaching, based on the reported use and utility of their PDA, but many had technical difficulties. Recipients of the PDA reported using their PDA primarily in the clinical setting, with the feeling that the PDA had a positive effect on their patient care. Many users had difficulty with technical aspects of PDA use. To support PDA recipients, technical assistance should be provided.

Measuring the user acceptance of a Web-based nursing documentation system.

OBJECTIVES: The development of an ICNP web-based nursing documentation system, and its evaluation for its usability, and its user acceptance. METHODS: A web-based nursing documentation system was designed and implemented by using the Greek translation of ICNP beta 2 version nursing terminology. The system integrates the steps of nursing process for providing and documenting nursing care, while ICNP terminology is used for the description of nursing concepts. The system was evaluated by nurses in a computer laboratory. We measured the user interaction satisfaction mainly by using questionnaires and scenarios. RESULTS: The nurses who evaluated the system possessed adequate basic computer skills; but low-to-moderate experience in clinical or hospital information systems; and insufficient experience with nursing vocabularies, and especially ICNP. Overall, they were satisfied enough with the system's usability and usefulness, while the acceptance level increased as the level of their training in computers, nursing process and ICNP was also increased. The integration and use in the system of predefined, or standardized, nursing concepts and care plans seems to increase the acceptance of the documentation system and also the ICNP. CONCLUSION: The subjective satisfaction and response of the users towards the system is specified. The described system was evaluated under "laboratory conditions" and revealed some of its strong and weak points and some of the factors that influenced its success and acceptance by its users.

Screening for pulmonary tuberculosis: an acceptable intervention for antenatal care clients and providers?

SETTING: Five purposively sampled health facilities in Kasungu District, Malawi. OBJECTIVES: To explore 1) the acceptability of introducing pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) screening into antenatal care (ANC) clinics amongst ANC clients and ANC service providers; and 2) the acceptability of tuberculosis (TB) treatment during and after pregnancy among women registered for TB treatment. METHODS: Fourteen focus group discussions and 40 in-depth interviews with ANC clients (15), ANC service providers (10) and women registered for TB treatment (15). RESULTS: Most clients found the introduction of PTB screening into ANC clinics acceptable. Some expressed concern at submitting a second sputum specimen, citing transportation/distance as the main obstacle. Other concerns were stigma and fear relating to the human immunodeficiency virus and the acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and taking TB treatment during pregnancy and breast-feeding. All ANC service providers supported the idea, but were concerned about increased workload. CONCLUSION: PTB screening in the ANC setting would be an acceptable intervention and could serve to increase PTB case notification in Malawi. However, alternative diagnostic strategies need to be explored. The negative associations with HIV/AIDS and some of the misconceptions surrounding TB treatment need to be addressed to avoid PTB screening becoming a potential barrier to seeking ANC. The main challenge will be whether over-stretched staff will be able to cope with this additional service.

Acceptance of quantity recipes with zero added salt by a military population.

The average civilian young man consumes approximately 5.5 g sodium daily in food plus an additional 20% as added salt. The average intake of military personnel may exceed this civilian level. The Surgeons General of the Military Services established 1,700 mg sodium per 1,000 kcal as the goal for sodium content in menus served in military dining facilities. We tested the acceptability of quantity recipes with zero added salt and control recipes with added salt in military dining facilities. Twenty-eight test recipes with zero added salt were prepared and offered on the regular serving line. Military personnel selecting the test items rated them for acceptability on a nine-point hedonic scale. Only 6 of the 28 recipes with zero added salt were rated significantly less acceptable than the control recipes. Chemical analysis of the test recipes showed an 11% to 87% reduction in sodium and a 28% to 80% reduction in chloride. Our results indicate that dietitians and/or foodservice managers can produce quantity food recipes that are reduced in sodium and acceptable to customers.

Clinically acceptable tolerance of roentgen generator exposure parameters.

The clinical demands for accuracy of roentgen generator scales were investigated in order to define suitable levels of tolerance to be required during calibration procedures and preventive maintenance on modern equipment. Radiographs of various film densities were made of four body parts. As test observers 59 radiologists and 53 radiologic technicians were asked to judge which radiographs they considered acceptable or not acceptable. Ninety-five per cent of the radiographs were accepted with the under- or overexposure of one mAs step. The spread of the estimations of suitable exposure data made by 38 radiologic technicians was also investigated. From these data the clinically acceptable tolerance of roentgen generator exposure parameters could be derived. It is suggested that the tolerance of tube voltage (kV) should be less than +/- 5 per cent, current-time product (mAs) -20 to +25 per cent and automatic exposure control systems (AEC) -20 to +25 per cent.

Acceptability of selected low-protein products for use in a potential diet therapy for chronic renal failure.

A very-low-protein, low-phosphorus diet, supplemented with either amino acids or ketoacids, is being studied as a potential therapy for chronic renal failure. Because of the severity of the protein restriction in this dietary approach, maintenance of adequate caloric intake is a concern. Acceptability of 27 low-protein products for potential use as sources of calories in the diet was evaluated. Twenty-three dietitians judged the products on the bases of appearance, taste, texture, and overall acceptability, using a scale of 1 (unacceptable) to 5 (highly acceptable). Sixty-seven percent of the products tested received scores of more than 2.5 in all categories. Products receiving the highest scores were vanilla cream wafers (4.0), low-protein gelatin (3.97), and chocolate chip cookies (3.78). Differences in calories and protein between brands of similar products are minimal; unfortunately, phosphorus and calcium data are lacking for many products. Cost in cents per calorie is 2 to 10 times greater than in conventional foods of the same type. The results show that there are a number of acceptable low-protein products that can be used to help ensure adequate energy intakes without sacrificing protein restriction in this dietary approach for chronic renal failure.

Who accepts first aid training?

The percentage of individuals trained in first aid skills in the general community is inadequate. We report here a study to investigate factors which influence motivation to accept voluntary training in first aid. A group of 700 randomly selected owners of inground swimming pools (a parental high-risk group) was offered a course of formal first aid instruction. Nine per cent attended the offered training course. The time commitment involved in traditional courses (eight training nights spread over four weeks) is not a deterrent, the same percentage accepting such courses as that who accept a course of one night's instruction. Cost is an important deterrent factor, consumer resistance rising over 15 cost units (one cost unit = the price of a loaf of bread). The level of competent first aid training within the community can be raised by (a) keeping to traditional course content, but (b) by ensuring a higher acceptance rate of first aid courses by a new approach to publicity campaigns, to convince prospective students of the real worth of first aid training. Questions concerning who should be taught first aid, and factors influencing motivation, are discussed.

Acceptability of potatoes groun in West Texas.

This study indicated that methods used to prepare fresh potatoes were, in decreasing order: Baking, mashing, boiling, and frying. The two varieties of potatoes commonly grown in West Texas were acceptable and compared favorably with similar varieties available in a local supermarket. However, the potatoes grown in West Texas had lower specific gravity. The Norgold Russet variety was judged by a sensory panel to be more acceptable than the Viking. Baked potatoes had superior texture but poorer color than boiled potatoes. Storing potatoes under home-like conditions for twenty-eight days resulted in lower acceptability, weight loss, and lower specific gravity. Some Norgold Russet potatoes were rotten after twenty-eight days' storage. Specific gravity on the day of cooking was correlated with texture of cooked potatoes. Supermarket shoppers' comments suggest that research is needed on the acceptability of West Texas potatoes baked in microwave ovens.
