[Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Yugoslavia 1951-1988].

Data on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) incidence in SFRY 1950-1988 were analysed. Information sources were published papers and official reports of Federal and Republic Institutions for Public Health. Indirect immunofluorescence technique was used in testing 1.842 organs of small wild mammals to the presence of HFRS viral antigen. This antigen was found in the lungs of 11 species. Average incidence of the carrier state was 10.4% Registered were 613 cases within the period 1951-1988. Morbidity rate was 0.05-10.6:1.00.000 for years. Disease have been registered during the whole year with maximum incidence rate in summer months. Men most capable of working were the most frequently affected: farmers, wood workers, soldiers. Average lethality was 5.2%.

Murine typhus on the northern Dalmatian islands, Yugoslavia.

The present epidemiological study had the objective to establish whether and to what extent resident islander populations might be affected by the natural foci of murine typhus. To this end, 294 serum specimens were collected during summer and autumn of 1985 from the northern Dalmatian islanders, all of which were tested for anti-Rickettsia typhi (R. typhi) complement fixing (CF) antibodies. These were detected and confirmed at both stages of the screening, namely during the first stage, conducted on the northern Dalmatian islands, where 63.3% of the representative population had a titre of 1:4 or higher and during the second stage, carried out on the island of Vir, with 68.1% of the residents found R. typhi positive unlike in the former. The majority of positive sera were found in the 21-60-year group, peaking in the 21-30- and 31-40-year groups with fewer positive sera among the subjects over 60 and the fewest among the residents below 20 years of life. Thus, current differences in antibody rates in various age groups were shown to be statistically significant. Murine typhus immunity in resident islander populations could be detected from the age of 10 years on, and was shown to become almost equal to the adult population's positive sera levels in the 16-20-year age group. No differences were revealed with regard to the infective agent exposure between the male and female populations representative of the total population or in any of the age groups.

Hypertension control and management in Slovenia, Yugoslavia.

Data were collected from 413 questionnaires sent to general practitioners throughout Slovenia, accounting for half the physicians in this discipline. BP was measured most commonly in the sitting position (72%), mostly on the left arm. Most respondents (93%) used only one cuff size. Correction of BP readings according to the patient's arm circumference was used by 63% of the respondents. Seventy-eight percent of the general practitioners recorded phase V of the Korotkoff sounds for diastolic BP. BP was measured more than once at each examination by 55%. BP measurements were performed by nurses in 27% of cases. Mercury sphygmomanometers were used by 87%. Manometers were calibrated once a year by 73%. Complete diagnostic procedures for the definition of hypertension were conducted in approximately 50% of patients, predominantly in severe cases. Drug treatment was commenced in the range of 'mild hypertension' usually by 93% of the general practitioners. It was started at BP values of 165/99 mmHg and higher. In patients with other risk factors, it was instituted even earlier. General measures (non-drug therapy) were advised by only 30%. Beta-blockers were usually prescribed to younger patients as drug of choice (74%), and diuretic agents to the elderly (48%). General practitioners' sources of new information about hypertension were mainly medical literature, pharmaceutical industry information, and professional meetings. Prevalence of hypertensive BP values in the responding general practitioners themselves was 8%.

[Are Aeromonas species a cause of diarrheal diseases in Yugoslavia?].

Isolation and identification of Aeromonas spp. have been performed in 1,610 stools in the period from January 1987 to April 1988. Of 1300 stool specimens taken from the patients with diarrheal syndrome (540 stools of children and 760 stools of adults) Aeromonas spp. were isolated only in 4 patients (0.30%, P less than 0.001). Positive stools were found in 3 adult patients and one child. In 310 examined stools of healthy adult persons Aeromonas spp. were not isolated. A significantly higher incidence of Aeromonas species has been observed in different kind of water. They were isolated in 58.3% in waste water, in 56.2% in river water and in 22.2% in well water. The results have shown that Aeromonas species are not important causative agents of diarrheal syndrome in our country but their importance for public health regarding their high distribution in the nature necessitate their further studies.

Case-control study of relationship of some biosocial correlates to rectal cancer patients in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

This investigation of some biosocial factors such as level of education, profession, tobacco smoking, alcohol and coffee consumption, and previous illnesses, reports on 98 patients with histologically confirmed rectal cancer, and 196 hospitalized and neighborhood-matched controls. Past history of hemorrhoids, polyposis, colitis, diverticulosis and appendectomy, as well as the use of laxatives were significantly more frequent among rectal cancer patients than in their controls. None of the case-control differences related to the other parameters reached statistical significance.
