Both psychologist and writer, the author describes the creative process from research, psychological, psychoanalytic, and personal experiential perspectives. The approaches of Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King, and W. Somerset Maugham to their work are very different, illustrating that the expression of creativity is idiosyncratic and unique. Examples of the author's creative process are also presented. Creativity can be used to help the writer come to terms with and to master his or her conflicts as described by Ray Bradbury. It can also be used simply to discharge those conflicts without coming to terms with them as was the work of Sylvia Plath. The relation between dreaming and creativity is discussed. Creativity is viewed not only as a vehicle for self-expression but also as a vehicle for self-discovery. The therapist's creativity and its relevance to the treatment process is also pointed out.

The changes in the way psychoanalysts theorize female psychology was in large part the result of changes that occurred in the context of the sex and gender movements of the last half of the 20th century. This article addresses the covert ways in which women sought to express power prior to women's liberation. It draws on psychoanalytic theory, emphasizing the study of power in conjunction with discourse theory in order to illustrate the complex ways change draws on both inner psychic impulses and changes in the cultural milieu.

The effects of cervical spinal cord stimulation (CSCS) on glucose consumption were examined in two patients with prolonged disturbance of consciousness due to head injuries. Several clinical parameters, including glucose consumption using positron emission tomography (PET) with [18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG), were compared before and after CSCS. After a 4-month period of stimulation, one patient (Case 1) regained consciousness and began to speak, but the other patient (Case 2) showed no improvement in consciousness level. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed Case 1 had no abnormalities in the thalamus and brainstem and no diffuse brain atrophy. Case 2 had a low density area in the left thalamus and enlargement of the aqueduct with diffuse atrophy of the left cerebral hemisphere. Cerebral blood flow studies and electrophysiological examinations revealed no remarkable change after CSCS. The PET study showed an increase in FDG uptake in the hypothalamus and the thalamus in both patients, but an increase in FDG uptake in the left cingulate gyrus and left frontal lobe was observed only in Case 1. These observations suggest that activation of the ascending reticular activating system, hypothalamus, thalamus, cingulate gyrus, and frontal cortex, and the preservation of the fiber connections between the limbic system and the thalamus and hypothalamus are important for CSCS treatment to improve the level of consciousness.
Researchers in cognitive psychology generally accept that information, including emotions, may be processed outside of awareness. Some have postulated that anxiety may be induced by stimuli presented below the level of detection, a process called implicit perception; however, conflicting findings as to the validity of subliminal stimuli in influencing anxiety have been reported over the past decade. In the present study, 39 subjects were exposed to either positive, negative, or neutral subliminal stimuli, and half the subjects were informed as to the type of stimuli they received. All subjects were monitored for frontalis muscle tension, a physiological indicator of anxiety, on an electromyograph (EMG). No significant effects of the exposure upon EMG recordings were noted. Awareness of the type of stimuli presented had a small but insignificant effect. These results, although tentative, when replicated would question the validity of subliminal visual presentation in altering emotive states.
Adaptive behavior following subliminal stimulation with "Mommy and I are One" (MIO) is a poorly understood finding. Positive mood may explain adaptive behavior, but we replicated an earlier finding that effects can also include negative mood. Color naming in a Stroop paradigm was slower on "symbiosis" words (Cohen's d = .19 to .56). Perhaps a "oneness" structure if primed has different affective correlates in different participants.
18 men and 18 women were tachistoscopically shown the stimuli MOMMY AND I ARE ONE, DADDY AND I ARE ONE, and MYMMO NAD I REA ENO, at subjective thresholds (subliminal condition) and at 500 msec. (supraliminal condition). Following exposure to each stimulus, subjects performed a fine motor line-tracing task. Heart rate was monitored continuously during stimulus presentation and the fine motor task. Analysis showed subjects did not respond more positively with decreased heart rate or fewer errors on the fine motor task following the MOMMY message than the anagram phrase, thereby providing no support for the hypotheses. No correlation was found between responsiveness to the MOMMY message and scores on measures of self-perception and kinship. In the light of mounting negative evidence, the validity of the method of subliminal psychodynamic activation is questioned.
