Supernumerary teeth are extra teeth or toothlike structures which may have either erupted or unerupted in addition to the 20 deciduous teeth and the 32 permanent teeth. This article provides an overview of frequency, distribution and classification of supernumerary teeth. The etiology of supernumerary teeth is still unknown, yet various theories have been presented based on epidemiological studies. Four clinical cases representing the possible manifestations of supernumerary teeth are discussed.
A case of bilateral molarized teeth in the maxillary central incisor region is reported. The bilateral central incisor teeth were extracted in a 13-year-old boy and examined radiographically and histologically. Both malformed teeth were diagnosed as double dens in dente with a central cusp and multituberculism in maxillary supernumerary central incisors.
This paper reviews the incidence, etiology and location of supernumerary teeth with emphasis on premolar supernumeraries and examines the management of supernumerary premolars of three patients undergoing orthodontics. These cases demonstrate that the management of premolars is assessed individually and treatments based on potential complications, which may occur during the orthodontic and surgical management of the dentition. Progress and posttreatment radiographs are recommended for the assessment of late forming supernumerary teeth.
The objective of the present study was to develop a three-dimensional method of locating the position of impacted supernumerary teeth in a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia. Stereolithographies of the patient's teeth and maxillofacial structure were prepared, coloring the teeth red. This model established accurate tooth malposition and provided support for selection of surgical exposure for extraction and traction of the impacted teeth. Selectively colored stereolithography is expected to be useful in a number of diverse situations.
