Studies of the inbred lines of mice A/He, AKR and CBA infected with different strains of H. nana have shown that the helminth, when changing the host for another one of the same species but with different hereditary characters, happens to be insufficiently adapted to the new host. However it does not prevent the start of the infectious process. With increasing number of passages the parasite's adaptation level to the organism of the new host rises gradually. Possibilities and the adaptation level of the agent to the new host are defined as well by the adaptational mechanisms common to each specific strain of H. nana and the host's characters.

The influence of the cestode H. taeniaeformis cysticercus exometabolites on the fibroblasts of their capsule in organ culture was studied. Half of explants were cultured in the presence of cestodes (the ratio between the parasite body weight and the cultural medium volume being 1:10 g/ml). After 2-30 days of cultivation the explants were examined by histological, histoautoradiographic and electron microscopic methods. The influence of cysticercus exometabolites on the culture resembled that of the growth-stimulating factors. The young, actively proliferating fibroblasts were mainly observed in the explants of the capsules cultured in the presence of cysticerci. Among the mature cells, fibroblasts with the predominance of the fibroclastic function were noticed rather than with the function of collagen biosynthesis. It is suggested that the change in the differentiation ways of fibroblasts may be due to some biologically active substrates of the cysticercus to be directed on slowing down the maturation of the connective tissue capsule.

Plerocercoids of Spirometra mansonoides produce a functional analogue of mammalian growth hormone (GH). Plerocercoid growth factor (PGF) mimics the growth-promoting actions of GH, but has not been shown to duplicate all of the actions reported for GH. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plerocercoid infection (chronic PGF treatment) on glucose metabolism of adipose tissue and to compare the effects to those elicited by insulin and GH in intact, diabetic, and hypophysectomized male rats. Groups of rats were constantly exposed to PGF (via plerocercoid infection) or injected twice daily with bovine GH, insulin, or saline for 10 days. Basal oxidation rates of [U-14C]glucose to 14CO2 in adipose tissue segments were measured in vitro immediately after tissue removal. Other aliquots of adipose tissue were preincubated in hormone-free medium for 3 hr prior to testing the ability of the tissue to respond to insulin or human GH (hGH) added in vitro. Adipose tissue from PGF-treated intact and hypophysectomized rats had significantly elevated basal glucose oxidation rates, and the tissue was sensitive to further stimulation by insulin or hGH. The results obtained with intact and hypophysectomized rats were essentially the same, indicating that the effects of PGF were not due to suppression of endogenous GH. The basal glucose oxidation rate in adipose tissue from diabetic rats was stimulated (P less than 0.01) by PGF, but the tissue was not sensitive to insulin added in vitro. Furthermore, PGF had no effect on body growth or blood glucose concentrations of diabetic rats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Effect of exometabolites of cysticerci of H. taeniaeformis on morphological features of transformed fibroblasts was investigated using L-929 cells. Studies on histochemistry and ultrastructure of L-929 cells treated with the cysticercal exometabolites induced a fatty conversion of these cells. It is proposed that the exometabolites in question may exert their influence on differentiation degree in the in vitro long-term cultivated fibroblasts-like cells.
