[Open treatment of postoperative peritonitis].

Results of using the open method of treatment of postoperative peritonitis in 26 patients are presented. Relaparotomy technique is described when "open abdomen" was used as a typical operation irrespective of causes of progressing peritonitis. In addition to surgical measures the authors stress the importance of intensive therapy. In relation with the character of postoperative peritonitis the abdominal cavity was closed by primary-delayed or secondary sutures on the 5-12th day. Lethality after using the open method of treatment of postoperative peritonitis was 30.7%.

Activation of radiosensitizers by hypoxic cells.

Hypoxic cells can metabolize nitroheterocyclic compounds to produce toxic intermediates capable of affecting the survival of neighbouring oxygenated cells. Mutagenesis experiments with E. coli WP-2 343 (deficient in nitroreductase) indicated that reduction of nitroheterocyclics outside bacteria causes killing and mutations within bacteria, presumably due to the transfer of the "active" specie (s). Using animal tissue slices to reduce nitrofurans, cultured L-929 cells incubated under aerobic conditions were far more sensitive to the toxic and DNA damaging effects of these drugs. Transfer of the active species also occurs in a tissue-like environment in multicell spheroids where the presence of a hypoxic central core served to convert the nitroheterocyclics to intermediates which also damaged the neighbouring oxygenated cells.

[Treatment of suppurative wounds of soft tissues with colocyl and its combination with proteolytic enzymes].

The effect of a collagenous preparation Colocyl and its combination with proteolytic enzymes on the healing of soft tissue purulent wounds were studied in 239 patients. Colocyl and its combination with proteolytic enzymes were shown to facilitate the rejection of devitalized tissues, control of the inflammation and activation of reparative processes.

[Effect of biologically active dressings of wounds on the course of the wound process].

A comparative analysis of the effectiveness and expediency of the local application of collocyl (128 patients), trypsin immobilized on textile cellulose and kapron matrix (186 patients) and gauze bandage moistened with a solution of enzymes and 10% sodium chloride was made. It was shown that collocyl as well as trypsin modified gauze and kapron accelerated cleansing the wounds of nonviable tissues, decreased their infectivity, reduced intoxication of the organism and improved the course of the wound process.
