Reaction to radiographic contrast agents: new developments in etiology.

Although a significant amount of histamine is released into plasma during contrast media injections, there still is no evidence to support an immunologic basis underlying contrast media reactions. This study supports previous observations that suggest in vitro leucocyte challenge may be of predictive value in contrast media reactions. Lassar's study in dogs and this study in humans clearly shows that complement activation by alternative pathway occurs during contrast agent administration. However, pathophysiological significance of this observation is not clear.

[Sequential endovenous angiourography (AUS) with image subtraction for the study of the arterial phase of urography. Comparison with nephroangiotomography (NAT)].

Two urographical techniques employed in the endovenous study of renal arteries are compared. They are nephroangiotomography (NAT) using synchroplan and sequential angiourography (SAV) with image subtraction. 64 patients were studied, 32 with NAT and 32 with AVS. Both techniques were shown to be useful, but AVS through infrequently used was cleary more efficient than Nat in the study of the vascular arterial phase.

The effect of bilipolinum (Adipiodon), an iodine contrast medium on erythrocyte enzymes.

Bilipolinum (Adipiodon), iodine contrast medium used in cholangiography, showed an inhibitory effect on the activity of human erythrocyte phosphohexoseisomerase, phosphofructokinase, aldolase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. The addition of glucose metabolites (glucose-6-phosphate, fructose-6-phosphate, fructose-1,6-bis-phosphate, pyruvate and lactate) abolished the inhibitory effect of Bilipolinum. In the presence of Bilipolinum purified erythrocyte phosphofructokinase showed a decreased affinity towards substrate, modified allosteric properties and reduced stability at pH below 7.5. Purified erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was also affected by Bilipolinum and its affinity for NADP was decreased. Testing of erythrocyte enzymes in the evaluation of toxicity of iodine contrast media is discussed.

[Effect of contrast media on the structure and function of hepatocyte plasma membranes].

The cholecystographic radiopaque agents, adipiodon and endographin, unlike the urographic contrast agents, triombrin and iodamide, decrease the fluorescence intensity of hydrophobic probes 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonate and 4-dimethylaminochalcone in plasmic membranes (PM) of rat hepatocytes primarily at the expense of the lowering of the constant of probe association with the membranes. The similar but less marked effects were discovered in experiments with lecithin lyposomal preparations. As regards the intensity of action, cardiotrast and triotrast an intermediate position between the two groups of radiographic contrast agents. Adipiodon and endographin induce an inhibition of membranous Mg+2 (Na+, K+) ATPase, which correlates with their effect on the structure of the hepatocyte PM. The data obtained allow a conclusion that, unlike the urographic agents, the cholecystographic radiopaque agents are bound to the definite areas of the hepatocytic PM and provoke alterations in the activity of membranous APTase because of the conformational rearrangements of the membranes.

[Varying results of different procedures for determining the FT4 concentration before and after the administration of contrast media].

After application of contrast media a rise in FT4 concentration was detected by use of the ultrafiltration method (Amicon) and the Dow-Lepetit method, especially after injection of Biliscopin, whereas the determination of FT4 concentration with the Amerlex method revealed a significant drop in FT4 concentration after contrast medium application. The results obtained with the Dow-Lepetit test have to be regarded as correct. The decrease detected by the Amerlex test is probably the result of a changed affinity of albumin to the labeled T4. Within 1 hr after application of contrast media blood for the determination of FT4 should not be collected.

Determination of adipiodone and Bilipolinum-Polfa in pharmaceutical preparation and in the bile.

A method for determination of adipiodone in pure substance, in preparation Bilipolinum Polfa (inj., 50%) and in the bile is presented. It is based on oxygen combustion of the substance with KNO3, using a modified absorbing agent. Iodide content is then determined with the iodide ion-selective electrode, directly or by argentometric titration. At stated conditions the method permits to evaluate rapidly and sufficiently precisely the content of contrast medium in the bile after administration of the drug.
