A specific, fast and very sensitive immunoelectron microscopy method was developed to morphologically and serologically distinguish different cultures of iron oxidizers. Bacteria isolated from the acidic waters of "Matahambre" and "Mina Delita" mines (Cuba) were characterized. An antiserum specific to Thiobacillus ferrooxidans did not react with other bacteria also present in the acidic waters of mine drainage. Our results suggest the occurrence of some strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans in these waters.

The time-resolved spectra of free photoelectrons and shallow-trapped electrons in the T-grains AgBrI emulsion were simultaneously detected with microwave absorption and dielectric spectrum detection technique. The results indicate that the electron trap effects of sulfur sensitization centers and sulfur-plus-gold sensitization centers are different with equal quantities of Na2S2O3 added. The sulfur sensitization centers acted as a deep electron trap to pick up the electronic decay because of increasing the number of deep trapped electrons, while the sulfur-plus-gold sensitization centers as a shallow electron trap decrease the electronic decay through effectively controlling the recombination between the electrons and the holes. The depth of sulfur-plus-gold sensitization center is shallower than that of sulfur sensitization center after the KAuCl4 is added. The effects of sulfur sensitization center and sulfur-plus-gold sensitization center on the photoelectron decay are different in different sections of decay curves through the change in electron time-resolved spectra.
Canine anterior cruciate ligaments were sectioned into sagittal, frontal and horizontal segments which were stained in bulk using a modified gold chloride method. Segments were then serially sectioned on a sliding microtome at 100 micron, mounted on slides, dehydrated and coverslipped. Abundant Ruffini and pacinian receptors were identified within the substance of the ligament. These receptors were innervated by 5 to 10 micron diameter axons penetrating from the peripheral synovium investing the ligament. The anterior cruciate ligament is capable of afferent input to the central nervous system of importance to the biomechanical function of the knee joint.
Corneal nerve regeneration was determined in albino rabbits after deepithelialization of the cornea using heptanol. Regeneration was monitored up to 10 weeks by measuring corneal tactile sensitivity using an esthesiometer and by examining stromal and intraepithelial nerve patterns following gold chloride impregnation and acetylcholinesterase staining. Tactile sensitivity was much reduced, possibly absent, up to 2 weeks after wounding. From 2.5-4 weeks, sensitivity recovered rapidly to 60% of prewounding levels and remained unchanged thereafter. In control corneas, a distinct orientation of the basoepithelial leashes towards the nasal-most limbus was observed in the central two-thirds of the cornea. Three days after wounding, neurites that were oriented radially towards the wound center extended into the periphery of the wound area from just beyond the wound margin. At 1 week, regenerating axons were present as single neurites and in the form of modified leashes, mainly at the periphery of the wound area but also more towards the center. At 3 weeks, neurites, regenerated leashes and networks of terminals with terminal endings were found throughout the regenerated epithelium. Regional changes in the orientation of the regenerated leashes were observed also. No further change in the intraepithelial nerve pattern was detectable thereafter up to 10 weeks after wounding. It was concluded that partial restoration of tactile sensitivity following deepithelialization of the cornea is a function of the establishment of a near-normal nerve pattern in the regenerated epithelium and is correlated with the subnormal neural density observed in a previous study.
The mechanoreceptor innervation of fibular collateral ligaments from human knee joints is described. While a small number of 'non-Paciniform' endings were identified in 5 optimally-stained ligaments, 'Paciniform' endings were not identified. These 'non-Paciniform endings' were variable in shape, but each consisted of an encapsulated arborisation of neurites embedded in a granular matrix. The significance of these findings is discussed as they relate to (i) discrepancies of the extent to which certain periarticular tissues are innervated, and (ii) the role of periarticular mechanoreceptors in initiating protective muscular reflexes.
The effect of vitamin A on experimental hepatic fibrosis in rats induced by administration of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and pig serum was studied. Vitamin A content in the CCl4-induced cirrhotic liver decreased significantly. Administration of pig serum caused hepatic fibrosis without hepatocytic damage. Vitamin A suppressed induction of experimental hepatic fibrosis by CCl4 and pig serum. Neither hepatocytic injury nor increased activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase induced by CCl4 was diminished by vitamin A. These data provide evidence that vitamin A inhibits hepatic fibrogenesis and that this effect may be mediated by an action on stellate cells rather than hepatocytes.
Gold (III) (Au(III) up to 0.25 microM increased prostaglandin E2-sensitive chick osteoblast and fibroblast adenylate cyclase activity without affecting 5'-guanylylimidodiphosphate-stimulated enzyme activity. Au (III) at 5-50 microM inhibited hormone- and nucleotide-mediated activation of adenylate cyclase. This process is time-dependent, irreversible and can not be explained by desensitivation of the PGE2-receptor. Basal adenylate cyclase activity was not influenced by Au (III) in the given concentrations. Pretreatment of membranes with 5'-guanylylimidodiphosphate prior to incubation with Au (III) prevented the inhibitory effect of Au (III) on adenylate cyclase, similar to the incubation experiments with NEM instead of Au (III). Our data suggest that Au (III) at low concentrations unspecifically stimulates PGE2-sensitive adenylate cyclase by binding to sulfhydryl groups of the receptor protein and that Au (III) at high concentrations specifically inhibits PGE2-sensitive adenylate cyclase by binding to sulfhydryl groups of the N-Protein and/or of the catalytic unit.
The various types of sensory nerve endings found in the peroneus tertius muscle in the ass and in the horse have been studied with Ruffini's gold chloride method. Free nerve endings have been described as well as encapsulated receptors. These corpuscles are classified as Pacini-like, Ruffini's terminations and also Golgi's tendon-organs. The authors have pointed out the morphology, topography and structural characteristics of the above named nervous terminations and have hypothesized that a probable functional relation existed between these nervous corpuscles and the considered tendinous structure.
