Arabidopsis hot2 encodes an endochitinase-like protein that is essential for tolerance to heat, salt and drought stresses.

The Arabidopsis hot2 mutant was originally identified based on its lack of thermotolerance, but pleiotropic abnormal phenotypes are also exhibited under normal conditions, including semi-dwarfism, ethylene overproduction and aberrant cell shape with incomplete cell walls. Here we present additional characterization of the hot2 mutant, and the map-based cloning of HOT2. Mutants of hot2 had an aberrant tolerance to salt and drought stresses, and accumulated high levels of Na(+) in cells under either normal or NaCl stress conditions. Expression of the stress-inducible COR15A and KIN1 gene in hot2 mutants in response to increased NaCl concentrations was normal. HOT2 encoded a chitinase-like protein (AtCTL1) that has not previously been shown to be involved in tolerance to salt stress. Ten-day-old seedlings of wild-type plants exhibited constitutive expression of the AtCTL1 transcript, the level of which was unaffected by treatment with NaCl, mannitol or mild heat. These observations provide genetic evidence that a chitinase-like protein prevents the overaccumulation of Na(+) ions, thereby contributing to the salt tolerance in Arabidopsis. A possible role for this chitinase-like protein in Arabidopsis tolerance to abiotic stress is discussed.

A family with congenital suprabulbar paresis (Worster-Drought syndrome).

A three generation family is described in which four members were found to have congenital suprabulbar paresis (Worster-Drought syndrome). It is suggested that some cases of congenital suprabulbar paresis are inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable expression and penetrance.

Variable selection in Platanthera bifolia (Orchidaceae): phenotypic selection differed between sex functions in a drought year.

We estimated selection on three morphological characters in the hermaphroditic, hawkmoth-pollinated orchid Platanthera bifolia and explored selection surfaces through male and female function. The work was carried out in northern Sweden during two flowering seasons (1994 and 1995) in one natural population and one season (1995) in another natural population. Fitness was estimated as number of pollinia removed (male function) and number of fruits produced (female function). We detected directional selection towards larger inflorescence size (flower number) through both sex functions in both populations in 1995. In 1994, with an unusually dry growing season, 78% of the individuals failed to set any fruit, and there was selection for larger inflorescences only through male function. In this year, there was selection towards longer flower spurs, which could be a direct or indirect effect of spurs being shortened by drought. The results demonstrate that selection patterns may vary temporally and spatially, and that the 'male function hypothesis' may be applicable as female function is more resource dependent than male function.

African droughts and dust transport to the Caribbean: climate change implications.

Great quantities of African dust are carried over large areas of the Atlantic and to the Caribbean during much of the year. Measurements made from 1965 to 1998 in Barbados trade winds show large interannual changes that are highly anticorrelated with rainfall in the Soudano-Sahel, a region that has suffered varying degrees of drought since 1970. Regression estimates based on long-term rainfall data suggest that dust concentrations were sharply lower during much of the 20th century before 1970, when rainfall was more normal. Because of the great sensitivity of dust emissions to climate, future changes in climate could result in large changes in emissions from African and other arid regions that, in turn, could lead to impacts on climate over large areas.

Salt and drought stress signal transduction in plants.

Salt and drought stress signal transduction consists of ionic and osmotic homeostasis signaling pathways, detoxification (i.e., damage control and repair) response pathways, and pathways for growth regulation. The ionic aspect of salt stress is signaled via the SOS pathway where a calcium-responsive SOS3-SOS2 protein kinase complex controls the expression and activity of ion transporters such as SOS1. Osmotic stress activates several protein kinases including mitogen-activated kinases, which may mediate osmotic homeostasis and/or detoxification responses. A number of phospholipid systems are activated by osmotic stress, generating a diverse array of messenger molecules, some of which may function upstream of the osmotic stress-activated protein kinases. Abscisic acid biosynthesis is regulated by osmotic stress at multiple steps. Both ABA-dependent and -independent osmotic stress signaling first modify constitutively expressed transcription factors, leading to the expression of early response transcriptional activators, which then activate downstream stress tolerance effector genes.

[Intermediary form of Foix-Chavany-Marie / Worster-Drought syndromes associated to involuntary movements: neuropsychological and phonoaudiological features].

The Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome (FCMS) is characterized by apraxia of speech associated to bilateral central facio-linguo-velo-pharyngeal paralysis, with automatic-voluntary dissociation. In Worster-Drought Syndrome (WDS), dysarthria is remarkable. We report an 18-year-old female, with clinical and radiological findings of intermediary form of FCMS/WDS, and showing involuntary movements, an unusual fact.

The California drought: A quasi-experimental analysis of social policy.

The effect of fines for failure to conserve water during the California drought of 1976 to 1978 was evaluated in a retrospectively arranged multiple-baseline design across three San Francisco Bay area cities. The data indicated that, on a community level, significant savings of water occurred regardless of whether fines were introduced or not. However, on an individual level, fines appeared to have an effect on private, as opposed to commercial or industrial, consumers who had received at least one fine. The limitations imposed on these conclusions by the quasi-experimental nature of the design were highlighted. Possible reasons for water conservation in the absence of fines were discussed within the framework of stimulus control. It was suggested that an area for future research should be the delineation of stimulus parameters involved in producing behavior change in entire communities.

Effects of flooding and drought on water quality in Gulf Coastal Plain streams in Georgia.

Since 1994, water-quality constituents have been measured monthly in three adjacent Coastal Plain watersheds in southwestern Georgia. During 1994, rainfall was 650 mm above annual average and the highest flows on record were observed. From November 1998 through November 2000, 19 months had below average rainfall. Lowest flows on record were observed during the summer of 2000. The watersheds are human-dominated with row-crop agriculture and managed forestlands being the major land uses. However, one watershed (Chickasawhatchee Creek) had 10 to 13% less agriculture and greater wetland area, especially along the stream. Suspended particles, dissolved organic carbon, NH4-N, and soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations were greater during wet and flood periods compared with dry and drought periods for each stream. Regional hydrologic conditions had little effect on NO3-N or dissolved inorganic carbon. Chickasawhatchee Creek had significantly lower suspended sediment and NO3-N concentrations and greater organic and inorganic carbon concentrations, reflecting greater wetland area and stronger connection to a regional aquifer system. Even though substantial human land use occurred within all watersheds, water quality was generally good and can be attributed to low stream drainage density and relatively intact floodplain forests. Low drainage density minimizes surface run-off into streams. Floodplain forests reduce nonpoint-source pollutants through biological and physical absorption. In addition to preserving water quality, floodplain forests provide important ecological functions through the export of nutrients and organic carbon to streams. Extreme low flows may be disruptive to aquatic life due to both the lack of water and to the scarcity of biologically important materials originating from floodplain forests.

Comparative nutrition and health services for victims of drought and hostilities in the Ogaden: Somalia and Ethiopia, 1980-1981.

The civil chaos created by a combination of drought and hostilities in the Ogaden region of southern Ethiopia during the past five years has caused the majority of the indigenous, principally nomadic population to flee the area and seek refuge either in Somali refugee camps or in Ethiopian shelters for displaced persons. This paper compares the provision of basic food rations, selective feeding programs, primary health care, and preventive health measures between the two groups. During 1980-1981 Somalia received more international assistance per capita than Ethiopia. Large numbers of Western personnel provided health and nutrition services in Somali refugee camps, whereas no foreigners were involved in Ethiopian shelters. These disparities were largely due to inadequate publicity concerning the problems Ethiopia faces, partly resulting from real and perceived political limitations related to the Soviet presence in that country. Refugee needs in Somalia have been publicized far more adequately, partly due to that country's alignment with the West. The Ethiopians nevertheless demonstrated greater efficiency in assisting their disaster victims; camp services comparable to those in Somalia were available despite greater logistic difficulties and fewer donated resources. The effectiveness of relief operations in Somalia was reduced by political constraints on governmental agencies.

EPG treatment of a child with the Worster-Drought syndrome.

This report of a case study of an unusual child aims to set the use of electropalatography (EPG) within the wider context of general communication therapy. It concerns a child of 12 years, diagnosed as having congenital suprabulbar paresis (Worster-Drought syndrome) who presents with severe developmental dysarthria; his speech is unintelligible, with hypernasality and glottalised articulation. His baseline EPG assessment patterns show minimal tongue-to-palate contact for all lingual obstruents, although he can demonstrate some tongue movement for non-speech skills, and has a slow but near normal swallow pattern. EPG therapy was used for tongue movements, but was adversely affected by his velopharyngeal insufficiency.

Nutritional status of preschool children in the drought affected Kalahandi district of Orissa.

A community-based cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the magnitude of undernutrition and protein-energy malnutrition among young children during 1996-97 in drought affected Kalahandi district of Orissa. A total of 751 children aged 0-5 yr were studied for anthropometry and clinical signs of nutritional deficiencies from 15 Gram Panchayats selected using probability proportionate to size sampling. There was no significant difference between boys and girls for nutritional status. According to weight-for-age, 57.1 per cent of the children were suffering from underweight (< median -2SD) and 21.3 per cent of children had very low body weights which were < -3SD of standard. Height-for-age and weight-for-height data showed that 41.8 per cent of children suffered from stunting and 27.9 per cent recorded wasting. The children below one year of age had relatively lower prevalence of malnutrition than the other age groups. The prevalence of clinical PEM in the form of marasmus was found in 0.7 per cent of children, while kwashiorkor was absent. This study showed that malnutrition is still a leading problem among preschool children of Kalahandi district and this has not improved in spite of nutrition intervention programmes which are currently in operation.

Drought associated poisoning of cattle in South Texas by the high quality forage legume Leucaena leucocephala.

Approximately 80 head of yearling cattle grazing on 680 acres exhibited signs of Leucaena leucocephala toxicosis, which was confirmed in 3 animals by detection of 3-hydroxy-4 (IH)-pyridone, the metabolite of the poisonous principle mimosine, in their urine. The animals had grazed leucaena almost exclusively due to lack of alternative forage resulting from drought conditions. Toxicosis from this otherwise high quality forage would likely not have occurred had animals consumed lower amounts of leucaena and could probably have been prevented, as it has been elsewhere, had the animals been colonized with Synergistes jonesii, a beneficial ruminal bacterium capable of degrading the toxic metabolites.

[Cluster analysis methods appropriate for classification of drought-resistant wheat ecotypes].

The appropriate cluster analysis methods for classification of drought-resistant wheat ecotypes were investigated, based on the analysis of 21 morphologic and agronomic characters of 15 winter wheat cultivars. According to the proximity degree to the results from experts experiences, the cluster results using original data were orderly better than those using Varimax orthogonal rotation, Promax skew intersection rotation, and principal component analysis with phenotypic mean's correlation matrix. The results using Euclidean distance were greater than those using Mahalanobis distance. The clustering methods of correspondent analysis and fuzzy cluster were better than those of nearest distance, furthest distance or group average method (UPGMA). Among all cluster results from various methods combined, the two cluster results from the fuzzy cluster using original data and from the correspondence analysis method were closest to the results of experts' experience. Based on both comparisons of results and examination of the performance of different strategies with several statistical properties, the two methods mentioned above were also acceptable.

[Effects of drought, CO2 concentration and temperature increasing on photosynthesis rate, evapotranspiration, and water use efficiency of spring wheat].

The effects of drought, CO2 concentration and temperature increasing on development period, photosynthesis rate (Pn), evapotranspiration (ET), and water use efficiency of spring wheat were investigated. The results showed that elevated CO2 concentration (550, 700 mumol.mol-1) could lengthen heading-ripening period, but high temperature (average diurnal temperature increase 4.8 degrees C), which made heading-ripening period shorten and speeded the seedling under treatment of both high CO2 concentration and high temperature, affected growing period more than high CO2 concentration. The combined effects of elevated CO2 concentration and temperature enhanced Pn, stomatal resistance (r), leaf water use efficiency (WUEl), and whole-canopy water use efficiency (WUE), while transpiration rate (E) were not significantly affected. The effects on ET depended on soil moisture. High CO2 concentration and high temperature enhanced ET under high (75%-85% field water capacity) and middle (55%-65% field water capacity) soil moisture, but decrease ET under low soil moisture (35%-45% field water capacity).

[Response of seed germination of three xeromorphic shrubs to drought stress].

The seed germination, seedling growth and water absorption characteristic of Caragana korshinskii, Hedysarum scoparium, and Artemisia sphearocephala were investigated under different osmotic potentials (PEG 6000, -0.3(-) -2.7 MPa). The results showed that under drought stress, C. korshinskii had the highest germination rate, while A. sphearocephala had the lowest one. Under -0.3(-) -0.6 MPa, the root length of 10-day-old A. sphearocephala seedling was significantly longer than that of H. scoparium and Caragana korshinskii(P < 0.05), and the length reached 7.9, 4.5 and 3.1 cm, respectively. There existed a significant positive correlation between seed germination rate and 72 h water absorption rate of the three shrub seeds(P < 0.01). The relationships among germination characteristics, root length, and survive percentage of seedlings were also discussed.

[Higher lint percent and drought tolerant cotton line selected by radiation breeding].

The Gossypium hirsutum cv. Liaomian No. 9 were mutagenized by 60Co gamma ray, from which the mutant line Zhonghuzhi PI 935 (be called "PI 935" for short) was bred by family selection method. The PI 935 not only has some good traits (growing period, drought tolerance, lint color and fiber quality) similar to the original cultivar, but also has higher lint outturn and lint yield than that of the Liaomian No. 9. The PI 935 has been identified and regional tested in nine places times for four years in the southern Xinjiang Weiwuer autonomous region. It was shown that the PI 935 had the higher lint outtrn for the average 47.3% was ten-point percentage more than that of the check cultivars (Junmian No. 1 or Xinluzhong No. 5), the similar lint yield by and large and the growing period by five days later than that of the checks. The PI 935 was collected in the National Bank of Crop Germplasm (unified No. ZM 114274 and named "Zhonghuzhi PI 935").
