Outpatient health care statistics data warehouse--logical design.

Outpatient Health Care Statistics on a state level is a central point where all relevant statistic data are collected from various sources from all over the country. Various and complex requirements for processing and reporting data makes Outpatient Health Care Statistics on a state level a perfect example for efficient implementing of Data warehouse technology. The research investigates logical design of data warehouse with a special attention on a different data modeling technique in various phases of a logical data warehouse design. The research shows that a requirement for processing statistical data determines the design decision and thus the scope and semantic value of final data warehouse.

NLP techniques associated with the OpenGALEN ontology for semi-automatic textual extraction of medical knowledge: abstracting and mapping equivalent linguistic and logical constructs.

This research project presents methodological and theoretical issues related to the inter-relationship between linguistic and conceptual semantics, analysing the results obtained by the application of a NLP parser to a set of radiology reports. Our objective is to define a technique for associating linguistic methods with domain specific ontologies for semi-automatic extraction of intermediate representation (IR) information formats and medical ontological knowledge from clinical texts. We have applied the Edinburgh LTG natural language parser to 2810 clinical narratives describing radiology procedures. In a second step, we have used medical expertise and ontology formalism for identification of semantic structures and abstraction of IR schemas related to the processed texts. These IR schemas are an association of linguistic and conceptual knowledge, based on their semantic contents. This methodology aims to contribute to the elaboration of models relating linguistic and logical constructs based on empirical data analysis. Advance in this field might lead to the development of computational techniques for automatic enrichment of medical ontologies from real clinical environments, using descriptive knowledge implicit in large text corpora sources.

[Computers in biomedical research II: experimental control, data acquisition and storage].

During the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the use of computers in biomedical research. In particular, the use of these instruments in experimental control, as well as in the acquisition and storage of experimental data, has become universal. The current capacity of these machines enables the precise manipulation of many experimental variables and allows for very fast acquisition of data. In this article, we discuss the fundamentals of small personal computers and its use in experimental control and data acquisition. Further, we discuss technical aspects related to the management of measurement instrument's control and their technical limitations. Electrical recordings from the cerebral cortex are used as examples to illustrate the different aspect included in this article.

Transforming health information management through technology.

No one would deny the need to transform health care. Information technology is capable of transforming health care organizations and delivering measurable value. However, these organizations will have to deploy effective, proactive strategies for managing information and adapting to the opportunities the technology offers. If, for example, an organization wants to become paperless, its information strategy must include appropriate tools to store and access unstructured data components of the medical record as well as structured data. An Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) is a critical element of this strategy. Also, a plan for managing change must be developed to mitigate technology risks. This can be realized through the development of a clear vision of the future and strong leadership, among other key items.

Automatic conceptual indexing of French pharmaceutical theses.

French pharmaceutical theses are rarely quoted. If the main obstacles originate from language or access barriers, proper indexation could also be blamed. Manually extracted key-words don't necessary come from a structured thesaurus. In the following work, this manual indexing method is compared to an automated one, "Nomindex", based on UMLS. The automated method is improved by the addition of a relevance scoring system. The first indexing step consists of downloading, adapting and indexing theses in electronic format. Results will then be analyzed and sorted by relevance, through the comparison of classic statistical indices (noise, silence and relevance). It was assumed that the manually obtained key-words were always relevant. The silence of manual indexing is nevertheless high: seven new key-words are proposed by Nomindex, which results are mixed (10% of silence, but 50% of noise). These results are promising on the first experiment on pharmaceutical document without lexicon improvement. The indexing, if it is currently insufficient for a real life use, could easily be improved by specific updates of the lexicon.

Relationships between healthcare and research records.

The ultimate end-point of healthcare and health-related life sciences, more or less as regulatory idea, is the prevention and cure of diseases, considering the fate of individual patients as well as the challenge of providing sufficient care for all. However, all undertakings stand under the "proviso of rightness of action". The movement of evidence-based medicine has triggered a renaissance of systematic self-assurance of best practise. The systematic utilization of healthcare records and research study recordings in an inter-linked manner provides a better enabling environment to improve evidence. Good e-health must contribute to accumulate inter-generation clinical experience. Qualified research should ensure methodological strictness via gold standards like controlled, randomised and masked trials. Building information systems for e-health as well as for e-science bears as a special focus the mutual cross-fertilization of these application domains. Analysing a variety of building blocks shows that both areas can benefit from generic solution pattern, keeping in mind that each domain has distinguished knowledge realms. Generic patterns as well as distinguished special features are illustrated by analysing state of the art solutions plus some experimental approaches, as there are: the generic part of the HL7 V3 RIM, the RCRIM work, laboratory information handling, vital sign standardization efforts, like ECG information models. Finally, the precision of the usage of the ubiquitous term "metadata" is taken as example of an open issue.

Teleform scannable data entry: an efficient method to update a community-based medical record? Community care coordination network Database Group.

Community-based multi-disciplinary care of chronically ill individuals frequently requires the efforts of several agencies and organizations. The Community Care Coordination Network (CCCN) is an effort to establish a community-based clinical database and electronic communication system to facilitate the exchange of pertinent patient data among primary care, community-based and hospital-based providers. In developing a primary care based electronic record, a method is needed to update records from the field or remote sites and agencies and yet maintain data quality. Scannable data entry with fixed fields, optical character recognition and verification was compared to traditional keyboard data entry to determine the relative efficiency of each method in updating the CCCN database.

Medical language processing with SGML display.

The paper demonstrates several ways that medical language processing can be combined with emerging display technologies to facilitate the extraction of data from free-text patient documents. The techniques allow rapid review via highlighting of the results of processing. Coupling of text markup with further procedures is envisioned.
