[Nuptiality during the 1980s in Cuba].

"This study presents an analysis of the demographic characteristics, levels and tendencies followed by Cuban nuptiality during the 1980s. The author uses the data provided by the 1987... National Survey on Human Fertility and data recorded in the last Cuban census, taken in 1981, to evaluate the changes experienced by women of fertile age of various marital status--primarily those in legal marriage and consensual unions--, highlighting the differences between the two [and]...analyzing the two in terms of various socioeconomic attributes...." [Population aging in Cuba].

"This article presents a brief discussion of the primary aspects associated with aging of the Cuban population, from a demographic, socioeconomic and political perspective. The first issue discussed in the article is how international immigration has contributed to the aging process of the country's population, and the possible causes of this immigration. The author...points out the efforts that the country is making to deal with an accelerated increase in the sixties-plus population...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Immunological study of cerebrospinal fluid using a human IgM antiserum produced in Cuba. A preliminary evaluation].

INTRODUCTION: The immunological study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is an essential diagnostic tool for evaluating patients with neurological diseases. The quantitative determination of the albumen and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in blood serum and in CSF by single radial immunodiffusion (SRID), together with the calculation of the IgG index to evaluate the presence of intrathecal synthesis of IgG and of the albumen quotient in order to evaluate the state of functioning of the blood brain barrier are essential elements to be evaluated for diagnosis and research in neurological clinical practice, as well as in the follow up of certain neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Specific antiserums from commercial firms such as Boehring, SIGMA, etc. are used for the quantitative determination of IgG and albumen both in blood serum and in CSF by SRID. The high cost and the difficulty in acquiring these immunodiagnostic kits have had an important effect on the diagnostic and research opportunities throughout the country. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this work we present the preliminary findings of the evaluation of the human IgG antiserum obtained from a ram, by Labex laboratories, for the quantitative determination of IgG in CSF by SRID, in order to find out whether this antiserum is efficient in the quantitative determination of IgG in CSF. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The studies conducted so far show that this antiserum may be a good candidate for use in immunological studies of CSF. Further work needs to be carried out on its validation in order to resolve the problems involved in immunological studies of CSF that we highlighted above. This would be achieved with an antiserum that is cheaper than those used up to now.

[Hemangioblastomas of the central nervous system in Camagüey (Cuba)].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Hemangioblastomas of the central nervous system are the most frequent vascular tumours. They are 1 2% of primary nervous system tumours and 8 12% of the posterior fossa neoplasms. The objective is to analize clinical behaviour and long term results of sporadic and Von Hippel Lindau linked hemangioblastomas. PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was searched the vacular Neurosurgical Data Bank at Manuel Ascunce Dom nech Hospital between January 1981 and January 2001 to select patients harvoring central nervous system hemangioblastomas histological confirmed. Melmo and Rosen criteria were utilized in Von Hippel Lindau syndrome. We performed a twenty years follow up of this patients. RESULTS: There were 12 patients with central nervous system hemangioblastomas. Average age of presentation was 41 years old. The first case had twenty years since the operation and the last, eight months. 83% were cystic and 17% were solids. There was not surgical mortality. One patient died of renal carcinoma 15 years after the operation on craneal fossa. CONCLUSION: Central nervous system hemangioblastomas are a cluster of challenge tumours. They are intraxial benign tumours with potential good outcome. We observed sporadic and Von Hippel Lindau linked hemangioblastomas. Patients with this syndrome need clinico imagenological screening to identify new associated lesions.

[Incidence of tuberculosis at the local level: Marianao Municipality, Havana City, Cuba (1990-2000)].

BACKGROUND: For the elimination of tuberculosis (TB) is necessary the surveillance of the incidence rate at the local level, as this is the first level of access to the health service. This study is aimed at providing a description of the spread and trend of the tuberculosis incidence rates in Marianao Municipality, Habana City by healthcare areas and age groups throughout the 1990-2000 period. METHODS: The time series for the 1990-1994 and 1995-2000 incidence rates were analyzed employing a two parameter exponential smoothing method. The total percentage and annual average of variation was estimated. The healthcare areas were stratified. RESULTS: In 1990-1994, the rate rose from 11.1 to 25.8 per 105 inhabitants (33% of increase by year), having been most noticeable in Carlos J. Finlay and Portuondo health areas (respectively annual average 112.7% y 36.2% increases). Taking into account that the control program was strengthened in 1995, the rates dropped by 47.6% in this municipality during the 1995-2000 period. The Finlay and Portuondo areas respectively lowered their rates by 79.9% y 39.7% while the Gonzalez Coro area showed a 58.3% rise and 27 de Noviembre area had no major change. The age and above 60 group had the higher percentage of cases, recording 49.8% of the total and only one case among children under age 15 for the period. During this same period, only six cases of tuberculosis/human inmunodeficiency virus were diagnosed. The 27 de Noviembre area was the only one found to be at the unsatisfactory level according to the stratification. CONCLUSIONS: An initially upward trend, followed by a downward trend in tuberculosis was found to exist in the Marianao Municipality throughout the period studied. This disease was predominant among older adults.

[Predictive factors of neurological complications in the period immediately after liver transplant: experiences in the Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas in Cuba].

INTRODUCTION: Liver transplant (LT) is today a first choice procedure in a group of hepatic diseases in their acute and chronic terminal stages. It is not, however, a technique that is completely free of complications and those of a neurological nature constitute between 8 47% of those reported. AIMS. The purpose of this study is to present the immediate neurological complications (NC) found in our patients, as well as to determine the predictive factors and their relation to the mortality rate. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the medical records of 26 patients who received LT at the CIMEQ (July 1999 December 2001), we collected a group of variables related to the donor, the surgical procedure and the post operative period and associated them to the occurrence of NC while these patients were in the ICU. RESULTS: NC were found in 16 patients (61.5%), the most frequent being encephalopathy (30.8%), tremor (26.9%), and convulsions (19.2%). No relation was found between the presence of NC and prior hepatic encephalopathy, the use of a suboptimal donor, nor did it represent a significant increase in the mortality rate. There was a significant relation with LT to recipients rated as grade C on the Child Pugh classification system, the presence of intraoperative hypotension (p= 0.0164) and primary dysfunction of the liver graft (p= 0.041). CONCLUSIONS: NC represented a significant cause of morbidity in the period following a liver transplant in our series, although they had no significant repercussion on the mortality rate. Their presence is related to variables concerning the recipient, the surgical procedure itself and the immediate post operative period.
