Enhancing effect of L-carnitine on some abnormal signs induced by pentylenetetrazol.

L-carnitine (CRT) is known to enhance penetration of some drugs of chemical groups across biological barriers. The aim of the study is to contribute to the problem of influencing the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) under CRT administration. In the case of validity of this presumption, CRT would be able to increase some effects of the central analeptic drug pentylenetetrazol (PTZ). Two different experimental schedules were chosen in respect of PTZ administration. The first one was an administration of a high convulsive dose of 100 mg/kg PTZ, the second one was a repeated administration of low (i.e., subconvulsive) doses of PTZ. CRT increased the total score of abnormal signs induced by a convulsive dose of PTZ. Moreover, CRT was able to accelerate the development of kindling induced by repeated administration of low doses of PTZ.

[The neurotropic effect of progesterone].

Neurological diseases are frequently observed in perimenopausal women and can be characterised through their gender-specific occurrence. These observations raise the question, whether sexual steroids are also involved in neurologic diseases. Epidemiological data have shown, that in Austria in the year 1993 the prescription-rate of psychopharmaca, hypnotics, and analeptics for women between the age of 50 to 55 increased over 300% compared to other age-groups. In males of the same age an increase of the prescription-rate was not observed. Molecular research during the last ten years has found that sexual steroids may interact with the central nervous system via the GABA-receptor. These observations confirm the epidemiological data, that neurologic and psychological functions may be directly influenced by sexual steroids.

[On respiratory stimulation by aminophenazol in global insufficiency due to chronic-obstructive diseases of the lungs (author's transl)].

For evaluation of a respiratory analeptic as supplementary therapy in global insufficiency blood gas analyses were performed on 19 patients under normal room air conditions as well as under oxygen breathing. It could be proved that with 2,4-diamino-5-phenylthiazol (aminophenazol; Daptazile) respiratory depression associated associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases can be influenced and that here is statistically significant improvement of respiration. Effects of mechanical breathing and hyperventilatin are discussed -- basing on the present evaluation results they need not be expected. Side effects were not registered. With simultaneous and exhaustive application of all therapeutic means for the remedy of pulmonary obstruction amiphenazol is recommended for use in cases of pulmonary hypoventilation and primary central respiratory depression.
