Analysis of prognostic factors regarding the outcome after a transurethral resection for symptomatic benign prostatic enlargement.

AIMS: To identify preoperative predictive variables regarding treatment outcomes following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) of patients with symptomatic benign prostatic enlargement (BPE). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in 384 patients of 1,397 men who had undergone TURP for symptomatic BPE. All the patients had completed the evaluation of International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS), and quality of life (QOL) index, and had undergone full urodynamics before the surgery. Outcomes were assessed at 12 months after surgery. The association between baseline variables and the improvement in outcome variables was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Preoperative urodynamic abnormalities included bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in 315 (82.0%), detrusor underactivity in 91 (23.7%), and detrusor overactivity (DO) in 160 (41.7%). Multivariate analysis showed that the presence of DO and a higher degree of BOO were both associated with postoperative improvement both in I-PSS and the QOL. The initial level of storage symptoms correlated with an improvement in the QOL. CONCLUSIONS: The association between those variables obtained by preoperatively performed urodynamic analysis and the degree of improvement in lower urinary tract symptom and QOL following TURP was statistically elucidated in a large number of patients with symptomatic BPE. A higher degree of baseline BOO positively predicts the postoperative improvement in I-PSS and QOL, while the baseline DO negatively predict it.

Giardia lamblia: effect of infection with symptomatic and asymptomatic isolates on the growth of gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were intragastrically inoculated with axenic Giardia lamblia cultures from symptomatic and asymptomatic children. All isolates were able to colonize the duodenum. However, the colonization capacity of the symptomatic isolates was significantly higher compared to that of the asymptomatic ones. Despite the different colonization capacity of the isolates, the growth curves of infected animals were significantly lower than those of controls. The study demonstrates that acute giardia infections are capable of altering the corporal development of the host. These results may suggest that not only symptomatic, but also asymptomatic giardiasis in children, often unnoticed by parents and clinicians, could be causing a silent detriment in their nutritional status.

Comparison of endometrial changes among symptomatic tamoxifen-treated and nontreated premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer patients.

Breast cancer patients who received tamoxifen as adjuvant therapy have been reported to have more endometrial lesions such as polyps, hyperplasia, or carcinoma. We conducted a prospective study to elucidate the endometrial changes of premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer patients with tamoxifen. Sixty-seven symptomatic breast cancer patients who had been on tamoxifen treatment, including 34 premenopausal and 33 postmenopausal patients, and another group of 48 patients who had not been on tamoxifen, including 25 premenopausal and 23 postmenopausal patients, were recruited. Symptomatic patients were defined as having hypermenorrhea or abnormal vaginal bleeding among premenopausal patients or postmenopausal bleeding among postmenopausal patients. Endometrial thickness and uterine size determined by vaginal ultrasonography, histologic findings, and risk factors for endometrial cancer were compared. The mean endometrial thickness and uterine size showed no statistically significant difference in premenopausal patients with (n = 34) or without (n = 25) tamoxifen treatment, whereas there was a significant difference in the postmenopausal patients with (n = 33) or without (n = 23) tamoxifen treatment (12.11 +/- 12.38 mm vs 5.41 +/- 2.70 mm, P = 0.025; 234.71 +/- 76.36 cm3 vs 108.81 +/- 81.27 cm3, P = 0.0018, respectively). The frequency of endometrial histopathologic findings was 23.5% (8/34) in tamoxifen-treated women compared with 12.0% (3/25) in nontreated women (P = 0.269) in the premenopausal groups. In contrast, it was remarkably high with 66.7% (22/33) in tamoxifen-treated women compared with 30.4% (7/23) in the nontreated women in the postmenopausal groups (P = 0.025). There were four postmenopausal patients with tamoxifen, including three with atypical endometrial hyperplasia and one endometrial carcinoma, in contrast to no postmenopausal nontreated patients, although this difference did not reach statistical significance in this study (P = 0.096). There was a remarkably high prevalence of endometrial histopathologic findings in symptomatic tamoxifen-treated breast cancer patients, especially postmenopausal women. Tamoxifen might be associated with premalignant or malignant changes in postmenopausal endometrium. Thus timely, aggressive histologic assessment such as curettage or hysteroscope should be performed to detect the endometrial lesions when symptoms occur. Vaginal ultrasonography could be a useful tool to detect the endometrial lesions.

Intraperitoneal pressures and clinical parameters of total paracentesis for palliation of symptomatic ascites in ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to prospectively evaluate the intraperitoneal pressure, as well as clinical and hemodynamic effects of total paracentesis, as palliation of symptomatic ascites in ovarian cancer patients. METHODS: Prospective study of 35 sequential total paracenteses was performed using a Veres cannula on patients with advanced recurrent ovarian cancer with symptomatic tense ascites. Relevant clinical symptoms and patient well-being were evaluated. Vital signs, abdominal parameters, and hydrostatic intraperitoneal pressure were recorded before, during, and after the procedure. RESULTS: Intraperitoneal pressure dropped from 30 +/- 7 cmH2O before paracentesis to 13 +/- 6 cmH2O after the procedure (P < 0.0001). Marked symptomatic improvement was observed in all patients (89% complete relief, 11% partial relief), while all the patients tolerated the procedure well without any complications. The mean volume of ascitic fluid removed was 4800 ml. Mean respiratory rate and mean heart rate were both significantly decreased following the procedure (29.3 to 21.4 respirations per min and 101.5 to 93.6 beats per min, respectively). Mean systolic blood pressure mildly decreased (6.6 mmHg), while the mean diastolic blood pressure did not significantly change. None of the patients presented signs or symptoms of hypovolemia during or after the total paracentesis. CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of intraperitoneal pressures during total paracentesis for tense ascites in ovarian cancer patients indicated that the severity of symptoms correlated with the intraperitoneal pressure prior to paracentesis, but not with the volume of ascites. Intraperitoneal pressures measured following total paracentesis in patients with ovarian cancer were similar to the baseline intraperitoneal pressure measured in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

Schmorl's nodes and low-back pain. Analysis of magnetic resonance imaging findings in symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in cases with symptomatic and asymptomatic Schmorl's nodes have been analysed. In all symptomatic cases, the vertebral body marrow surrounding the Schmorl's node was seen as low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and as high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. It was confirmed by histological examination that the MRI findings indicated the presence of inflammation and oedema in the vertebral bone marrow. These MRI findings were not seen in asymptomatic individuals. Inflammatory changes in the vertebral body marrow induced by intraosseous fracture and biological reactions to intraspongious disc materials might cause pain. We postulate that after fracture healing and subsidence of inflammation, the Schmorl's nodes become asymptomatic, in analogy with old vertebral compression fractures. MRI is not only useful in detecting the recently developed Schmorl's nodes but also in differentiating between symptomatic and asymptomatic Schmorl's nodes.

Effect of balloon angioplasty on high grade symptomatic vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Of 455 cases of ruptured intracranial aneurysm treated with radical surgery from January 1987 to March 1992, 19 cases with high grade symptomatic vasospasm were treated by percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty (PTA). The indication for PTA was high grade symptomatic vasospasm which does not respond to conservative medical treatment. Of the 36 segments of vasospastic arteries, severe vasospasm (angiographical constriction more than 50% of diameter on admission) was observed in 67%. PTA dilated these vasospastic arteries significantly (diameter of more than 75% of diameter on admission) in 83%. Follow up angiography revealed neither recurrence of vasospasm nor chronic atherosclerotic changes. Clinical improvement within 24 hours after PTA was observed in 63% of cases (7 of 17 cases with consciousness disturbance, 5 of 16 cases with motor weakness and one of 7 cases with aphasia). Outcomes at the time of discharge were excellent in 10 cases, good in 3, fair in 4, and lethal in 2. SPECT study before and after PTA confirmed improvement of cerebral blood flow in 3 out of 5 cases investigated. PTA for high grade symptomatic vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage is considered an effective treatment method for the patient who does not respond to medical therapy. Immediate improvement of angiographical and clinical findings were frequently observed immediately after PTA. Exact indication and timing of PTA should be postulated after much more cases have been treated with this methal.

Double-blind comparison of liquid antacid and placebo in the treatment of symptomatic reflux esophagitis.

Although antacids have been the mainstay of pharmacologic therapy for reflux esophagitis, their effectiveness has not been tested in a placebo-controlled double-blind trial. We report a double-blind comparison of liquid antacid vs placebo in the treatment of reflux esophagitis in 32 patients with chronic heartburn. Entry criteria included the presence of symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux confirmed by both an acid perfusion (Bernstein) test and by intraesophageal pH probe. Drug treatment consisted of 15 ml (80 mEq) doses of antacid (Maalox Therapeutic Concentration, William H. Rorer) or placebo taken 7 times daily, ie, 1 and 3 hr after meals and at bedtime. Both groups showed significant improvement (P less than 0.05) in both frequency and severity of heartburn. The time to reproduce heartburn with the timed Bernstein test was increased with both active drug and placebo therapy. The mean increase was 402% (41 +/- 20 sec to 169 +/- 66 sec) for the placebo group and 286% (42 +/- 16 to 120 +/- 57 sec) in the antacid group. Both the antacid and placebo groups showed improvement in the degree of esophagitis as assessed endoscopically. The current study asked: does regular antacid therapy have a favorable influence on the natural history of symptomatic reflux esophagitis, ie, does therapy heal or otherwise change esophagitis so that painful episodes are either less frequent, less severe, or both? We found that the natural history of symptomatic reflux esophagitis was to improve with either antacid or placebo. There was no significant difference in antacid or placebo on the (short-term) natural history of the disease.

Symptomatic sarcoidosis of the stomach.

A patient is presented here who had gastric sarcoidosis which was initially diagnosed as Menetrier's disease. The English medical literature comprises 19 cases with symptomatic gastric sarcoidosis, and these are reviewed. The clinical, roentgenographic, and endoscopic findings in gastric sarcoidosis are quite variable, but of the symptomatic patients, 75% present with pain and 25% with bleeding; surgery is required in 50% of patients, while of those treated with corticosteroids, 66% improve symptomatically. Endoscopic biopsies are accurate and essential in establishing the diagnosis.

Objective evaluation of symptomatic alkaline reflux after antrectomy.

The purpose of this study was to compare the endoscopic and histologic findings in gastric mucosa, the total bile acids in the gastric contents, and the gastric emptying of a solid food in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients after vagotomy and antrectomy. Eleven male patients with typical symptoms of alkaline reflux were compared to six asymptomatic patients. There were no significant differences between the groups in output or concentrations of bile acid in fasting gastric juices. Evidence for gastritis by endoscopic or histologic features was present in asymptomatic as well as symptomatic patients. Gastric emptying of radiolabeled liver was faster in the symptomatic group, but the difference was not significant. In conclusion, these tests do not distinguish between patients with symptoms of alkaline reflux and asymptomatic patients after vagotomy and antrectomy.

Management of symptomatic carotid stenoses with coincidental intracranial aneurysms.

There are at present strong indications for surgery in patients suffering from symptomatic extracranial carotid stenoses of > 70%. Surgery of coincidental aneurysms is a still debated problem, but there is general agreement that it is indicated in selected cases according to the patient's life-expectancy and size and site of the aneurysm. The coexistence of these two lesions raises a decision-making problem. We reviewed 389 endarterectomies and found 12 intracranial berry aneurysms in 10 (2.6%) patients. All the 10 patients were harbouring a symptomatic carotid stenosis of > 70%. Since the correction of a stenosis increases blood flow to an aneurysm, our approach was to first operate on the intracranial lesion and then the stenosis in 7 patients harbouring aneurysms > 5 mm. Two patients affected by small aneurysms < 5 mm of an A2 azygos and left internal carotid artery underwent left endarterectomy only. The last patient was submitted first to percutaneous angioplasty of a left stenosis, then to open surgery of a contralateral middle cerebral aneurysm and finally to intravascular occlusion of a small aneurysm of the left internal carotid bifurcation by menas of a coil; this policy was adopted in order to restore normal haemodynamic conditions before the intracranial procedure. There was no mortality or permanent morbidity following surgery for aneurysm or endarterectomy. Transient morbidity occurred in 2 cases after clipping of aneurysms of the anterior communicating and middle cerebral arteries. Our results suggest that surgery of coincidental aneurysms may give good results even when there is a severe symptomatic stenosis in the neck. Moreover, the presence of a small intracranial aneurysm does not seem to be an additional risk factor for endarterectomy. When the lesions are on different sides, it may be better to treat the stenosis first if it decreases the ipsilateral cerebral blood flow.

Symptomatic fracture incidence in elderly men and women: the Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study (DOES).

This longitudinal population-based study documents the incidence of all symptomatic fractures from 1989 to 1992 in an elderly, predominantly Caucasian population of males and females (> or = 60 years as at 1 January 1989) living in the geographically isolated region of the city of Dubbo, NSW, Australia. Fractures were ascertained by reviewing reports from all radiology services in the region. There were 306 fractures in 271 patients during the study period representing 11,401 person-years of observation. In the 60-80 year age group only 10% of fractures involved the hip, while in the over-80 age group this proportion rose to 41%. Incidence of distal forearm, hip and total fractures increased exponentially in both sexes with increasing age. Rib fractures were relatively common, with incidence rates for rib fractures similar to those for humeral fractures. Overall fracture incidence was 2685 per 100,000 person-years (males 1940 per 100,000 and females 3250 per 100,000). Residual lifetime fracture risk in a person aged 60 years with average life expectancy was 29% for males and 56% for females. Symptomatic fracture rates with the improved methodology in this study were higher than previously reported in both elderly males and females, with a marked preponderance of non-hip fractures in the 60-80 year age group. These symptomatic fractures have previously been underestimated, if not largely ignored, in public health approaches including cost-benefit analyses of osteoporosis prevention and treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Clinical experiences following the surgical therapy of asymptomatic, oligosymptomatic and symptomatic parathyroid gland hyperfunction].

Depending on their symptomatology 152 cured (i.e., normocalcemic) patients with surgically proven primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) showed typical symptoms preoperatively. Besides hypercalcemia and elevated parathyroid hormone levels, 15 patients suffered only from hypertension and/or diffuse osteoporosis and/or complaints caused by the hypercalcemic syndrome (oligosymptomatic patients). Nine patients had no complaints (asymptomatic patients). The long-term clinical course of all patients was analyzed up to 22 years. Although the formation of urinary calculi was stopped in 94% of cases, a deterioration of renal function and hypertension was seen in symptomatic (12.5% and 9.2%, respectively) and oligosymptomatic patients (6.7% and 13.3%, respectively). Renal function and hypertension were unpredictable despite normalization of the hyperactive parathyroid metabolism and were of decisive prognostic significance; 6% died of acute or chronic renal failure, or of the consequences of hypertension. Multiple bone lesions, even large, healed functionally and were of no prognostic significance. In the majority of symptomatic patients gastrointestinal manifestations held postoperatively, but two patients died of acute pancreatitis without gastrointestinal complaints preoperatively. Almost all symptoms of the hypercalcemic syndrome disappeared immediately and permanently in symptomatic and oligosymptomatic patients. No deterioration of renal function and no elevation of blood pressure was observed in cured asymptomatic patients postoperatively. Immediate surgical treatment even in asymptomatic patients may have avoided complications of chronic renal failure or of hypertension. As soon as organic manifestations, even in a mild form, have been established, it seems impossible to predict the course and to prevent an unfavorable clinical outcome.

Prevention of symptomatic vasospasm by topically applied nimodipine.

A 2.4 x 10(-5) M solution of the Calcium-antagonist Nimodipine was administered to the exposed cerebral vessels in 17 patients intraoperatively clipping of a ruptured aneurysm. The interval between subarachnoid haemorrhage and operation was 48 to 72 hours. The CT investigation had revealed blood accumulation in the basal cisterns in all cases. Vasodilatation was observed in all instances; the percentage being greater in small vessels as compared to large vessels. Postoperatively, a neurological deficit combined with angiographically verified vasospasm occurred in two patients, but was reversible in both. Fifteen patients remained free from symptomatic vasospasm and were discharged without neurological deficit. In 13 of these patients and 3 additional cases, a plastic cannula was placed intraoperatively so that postoperative topical administration of Nimodipine was possible. Postoperative control-angiograms after a mean interval of 7 days from SAH did not show severe spasm in any of the patients; localised moderate asymptomatic spasm was found in 8 cases and was reserved in 5. Moderate postoperative symptomatic spasm was observed in 2 patients, treated and reversed in one patient. In 5 of 7 cases without evidence of spasm in the angiogram postoperative topical administration of Nimodipine caused vasodilatation. It is concluded, that topical intracisternal administration of Nimodipine reverses intraoperative vascular spasm and decreases the probability of postoperative symptomatic vasospasm after early surgery.

Symptomatic, nonruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms: are emergent operations necessary?

To evaluate current morbidity and mortality and to define the best strategy of management, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical histories of 36 patients (24 males and 12 females) who underwent repair of symptomatic, nonruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) between April 1, 1987, and April 30, 1992, at the Mayo Clinic (3.2% of 1111 patients with AAA repair). Ages ranged from 54 to 94 years (mean 75 years). All patients were hemodynamically stable and presented with abdominal and/or back pain of 1 to 60 days' duration (mean 11.6 days). The diagnosis of AAA was confirmed by CT scan in 26 patients, ultrasonogram in seven, and plain abdominal films in three. Fourteen patients (38.9%) were operated on emergently within 4 hours of admission, 11 (30.5%) between 4 and 24 hours, and 11 between 24 hours and 7 days following presentation (mean 28.9 hours). Eight (22.2%) had inflammatory aneurysm. AAAs were repaired with a straight graft in 17 patients and a bifurcated graft in 19. Complications occurred in 24 patients (66.7%). Mortality was 11.1% (4/36). The association between emergency repair (< 4 hours) and 60-day mortality was significant (p < 0.05). There were no deaths among those patients whose operation was delayed. Comparison to a matched control group of 72 patients who underwent elective AAA repair revealed an increased incidence of inflammatory aneurysm and female gender among our study group. The symptomatic patients had larger aneurysms (6.5 vs. 5.6 cm, p < 0.05) and required more intraoperative transfusions. Intensive care unit and hospital stay was longer in the symptomatic patients (p < 0.001); morbidity was markedly increased (p < 0.001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Symptomatic subependymomas of the lateral ventricles.

A case of symptomatic subependymoma of the lateral ventricle in a 64-year-old-woman is presented. We have found only 12 cases of symptomatic subependymoma of the lateral ventricle reported in the literature. We think that this location denotes a specific anatomoclinical entity, with a histological picture and a surgical prognosis that are different from those of the symptomatic subependymomas located in other sites of the ventricular system.

Cognitive-behavioral stress management reduces distress and 24-hour urinary free cortisol output among symptomatic HIV-infected gay men.

BACKGROUND: Stress management interventions can reduce symptoms of distress as well as modulate certain immune system components in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These effects may occur in parallel with reductions in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hormones such as cortisol, which has been related in other work to a down-regulation of immune system components relevant to HIV infection. The present study tested the effects of a multimodal cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) intervention on 24-hour urinary free cortisol levels and distressed mood in symptomatic HIV+ gay men. METHODS: Symptomatic HIV-infected gay men who were randomized to either a 10-week group-based CBSM intervention or a 10-week wait-list period provided psychological responses and urine samples pre-post intervention. RESULTS: Of the 59 participants providing matched questionnaire data, men assigned to CBSM (n = 40) showed significantly lower posttreatment levels of self-reported depressed affect, anxiety, anger, and confusion than those in the wait-list control group (n = 19). Among the 47 men providing urine samples (34 CBSM, 13 controls), those assigned to CBSM revealed significantly less cortisol output as compared to controls. At the individual level, depressed mood decreases paralleled cortisol reductions over this period across the entire sample. CONCLUSION: A time-limited CBSM intervention reduced distress symptoms and urinary free cortisol output in symptomatic HIV+ gay men and greater reductions in some aspects of distress, especially depressed mood, paralleled greater decreases in cortisol over the intervention period. If persisting stressors and depressed mood contribute to chronic HPA axis activation in HIV-infected persons, then interventions such as CBSM, which teaches them to relax, alter cognitive appraisals, use new coping strategies, and access social support resources, may decrease distress and depressed mood and normalize HPA axis functioning.

[Diagnosis and indication for aortic valve replacement in asymptomatic and symptomatic patients with aortic regurgitation].

Chronic volume overload is associated with dilatation and eccentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle (= ventricular remodeling). With the dilatation of the left ventricle and the shift of the pressure-volume-relationship to the right, the filling pressures can be kept normal despite severe regurgitation. Therefore, the patient with aortic regurgitation can remain asymptomatic over many years. Thus, the indication for aortic valve replacement in patients with severe aortic regurgitation is sometimes difficult and may lead to problems to choose the optimal time point for operation. As a general rule, symptomatic patients with severe aortic regurgitation should be operated as soon as possible. In asymptomatic patients with significant dilatation of the left ventricle and reduction of systolic pump function the therapy of choice is aortic valve replacement. Asymptomatic patients with normal left ventricular function have usually a good prognosis with a yearly mortality rate of approximately 0.04%. However, in the presence of significant dilatation of the left ventricle, i.e. enddiastolic chamber diameter more than 70 mm respectively endsystolic diameter more than 50 mm, patients have to be checked on a regular basis, i.e. in yearly intervals to detect left ventricular dysfunction in due time. According to the literature, asymptomatic patients with severe aortic regurgitation develop left ventricular dysfunction in a yearly rate of 4%. However, approximately 50% of all patients are even after 10 years asymptomatic. The indication for aortic valve replacement is given when the patient shows a deterioration of left ventricular function or becomes symptomatic. Valve replacement is also indicated in patients with an ejection fraction below 50% and/or endsytolic chamber diameter of more than 55 mm. Therapy of choice in symptomatic patients with severe aortic regurgitation is aortic valve replacement. In asymptomatic patients, operation depends on the degree of chamber dilatation respectively the severity of left ventricular dysfunction. In patients with severe aortic regurgitation but without clinical symptoms and moderate enlargement of the left ventricle regular check-ups in yearly intervals are indicated. In the presence of severe left ventricular dilatation check-ups should be performed on a half-year basis to prevent irreversible damage to the heart muscle.

Hilar biliary cysts in hepatic transplantation. Report of three symptomatic cases and occurrence in resected liver grafts.

Hilar cysts are infrequent post-transplant biliary tract complications. Thirteen cases were discovered among 493 consecutive liver transplants (2.6%). Three (0.60%) were symptomatic (obstructive jaundice) while the other ten were found by systematically searching in the hilum in a series of 129 consecutive, resected grafts at retransplantation or autopsy (n = 54). Two types of cysts were detected: in eight grafts (1.6%), these were blind unilocular cavities with viscid mucous content, located adjacent to the biliary tract anastomoses. These had been inadvertently created as a result of the sequestered remnant cystic duct after cholecystectomies and biliary tract reconstructions, where a double-barreled common duct and long cystic duct had been present in the donor liver. These mucoceles ranged from 0.5 to 5.5 cm in diameter (median 1.7 cm). The three symptomatic cases were diagnosed by imaging techniques 3.5 years after transplantation; however, this type of cyst was found as early as the 2nd month post-transplantation when detected in lost liver grafts. Five livers (1%), lost between 5 months and 2.8 years post-transplantation, showed cystically dilated peribiliary glands, sometimes with multilocular, and occasionally multiple, cavities ranging from 0.5 to 2 cm in diameter (median 0.8 cm). This type of cyst was asymptomatic and located adjacent to the left, right, or common hepatic ducts. Threads were found near four cysts, suggesting that surgical injury may have been responsible for obstructing the neck of the glands. With the increasing number of long-term survivors of liver transplantation, unless preventive surgical methods are implemented, the number of symptomatic cysts of these origins can be expected to grow. Transplantation teams should, therefore, be aware of these potential causes of biliary tract complications.
