137Cs and relationships with major and trace elements in edible mushrooms from Mexico.

137Cs and 40K specific activity together with major and trace elements were determined in soil samples and in different edible wild mushroom species collected from a seminatural temperate forest ecosystem located in the central part of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. The activity measurements were made using a gamma-ray spectrometer system with a high purity germanium (HpGe) detector. The major and trace elements were determined using emission spectrography and mass spectrometry, respectively. The aggregated transfer factors for 137Cs were estimated in 30 local mushroom species collected from 1993 to 1999. Differences as large as three orders of magnitude were observed. The contribution of mushrooms for the total 137Cs dietary intake by the local population was estimated to be 37%. Mushrooms also showed to be good accumulators for Rb, Cu, Cs and Se.

Trace elements in regulation of NF-kappaB activity.

In recent years several studies have shown that NF-kappaB might be a very important therapeutic target in the treatment ot various chronic inflammatory, degenerative and tumour diseases. Trace elements play essential roles in the regulation ot cell signaling mechanisms via transcription tactors and a large number of genes. An important aspect of the present review is the description ot the mechanisms by which trace elements might influence transcription factor NF-kappaB. DNA-binding activity of NF-kappaB is regulated by the redox state of the cysteine residue (Gys-62) in the DNA binding domain of the p50 subunit and impaired by different metals (Go, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb). It has been hypothesised that the broad speciticity of interrelationships between NF-kappaB. AP-1 and various metals results from interactions of metals with specific moieties of transcription factors and IkappaB-kinases, as well as trom the existence of a metal-governed redox system. The hypothetical targets in the NF-kappaB signaling pathway affected by metals are: IkappaB-kinases, IkappaBs, NF-kappaB, proteasome degradation of NF-kappaB, kappaB-sites in DNA. Possibly, this system is required by the cell for adequate regulation ot the transcription machinery in response to changes in intracellular and intranuclear fluxes of metals and radicals and is very ancient evolutionary mechanism of stress adaptation. The role of the NF-kappaB-mediated mechanism in induction or prevention of chronic intlammatory, allergic, degenerative and tumor diseases by zinc, vanadium, manganese, copper, silica, iodine and other trace elements is discussed.

Minor and trace element content of two typical Italian sheep dairy products.

The concentration ranges in milk and cheese of a number of metallic elements relevant to the health of the consumer are dependent upon animal species, feeding, time of year, environmental conditions and manufacturing processes. We have measured the concentrations of selected trace elements--Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Pt, Sr and Zn--in raw ewes' milk and typical ewes' milk cheeses. Samples of milk, curd, whey, cheese after moulding, cheese after salting, commercial cheese (Pecorino), Ricotta, scotta and brine were analyzed for seven complete cycles of cheese production. Samples of curd, whey, brine and waste product (i.e. scotta) were collected and analysed in addition to the cheese and milk to assess the distribution of each element in the main product, by-products and waste products during cheesemaking. Quantitative determinations were performed mainly by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. There were considerable differences among the trace element contents of raw ewes' milk and related products, indicating that manufacturing processes play a key role in the distribution of minor and trace elements. Two different approaches were used to assess the dietary intake of these elements associated with the consumption of Pecorino and Ricotta, and whether this had any nutritional or toxicological implications. The results indicated no toxicological risk and showed that, on the contrary, Pecorino may be a good source of several essential elements.

Trace element balance in adults receiving parenteral nutrition: preliminary data.

There have been many recommendations regarding trace element needs of adults receiving total parenteral nutrition. Balance studies for zinc, copper, manganese, chromium, selenium, and molybdenum were carried out in 3 critically ill patients in an intensive care unit. Results indicate that the need for zinc was great in them, but that for copper and manganese was lower. Small negative chromium and selenium balances were observed. Molybdenum, iron, cobalt, and iodine balances were attempted but proved difficult to interpret. The requirement of each trace element varied from patient to patient, and was influenced by the presence of gastrointestinal fluid loss and renal function.

[Determination of rare-earth and trace elements in teeth enamel by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy].

Determination of rare earth and trace elements in teeth enamel was studied by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The sample was completely dissolved by HNO3-H2O2. The range of precision is 0.50%-6.79% given by the relative standard deviation and the range of accuracy is 94.45%-104.78% obtained by measuring standard recovery rate. The above data satisfied completely the requirements of biological sample. While this study provides experimental data of rareearth and trace elements of teeth enamel for carious teeth and none carious teeth of human for prevention and cure of decayed tooth. A reasonable method is provided for mouth medicine research.

Bile secretion of trace elements in rats with a congenital defect in hepatobiliary transport of glutathione.

Bile secretion of trace elements, analyzed by proton-induced x-ray emission, was studied in rats with a congenital defect in hepatobiliary transport of organic anions [Groningen Yellow (GY) rats], in which the process of bile secretion resembles that of the neonatal period. Bile flow (-41%) and biliary glutathione secretion (-99%) were drastically impaired in GY rats compared with controls. Plasma concentrations of all detectable trace elements (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mo, Br, and Se), as well as that of simultaneously determined Ca, were similar in GY and age-matched control Wistar rats. Bile concentrations of Fe, Mo, Br, and Ca were also similar in both groups, resulting in a approximately 40% reduction of their secretion rates in GY rats. The concentrations of Zn (-62%) and Mn (-64%) were significantly lower in GY rats in contrast to that of Cu, which was 50% higher. Se could not be detected in bile of either group. Recovery in bile (% dose/3 h) after i.v. injection of MnCl2, CuSO4, or SeO2 (1 mg metal/kg) was lower in GY rats than in controls: Mn, 26 and 35%; Cu, 2.6 and 5%; and Se, 1.5 and 5%, respectively. Injection of ZnSO4 did not lead to increased Zn secretion in GY rats, and only 1.1% of the dose was recovered in controls. Thus, the hepatic handling of different endogenous and exogenously administered trace metals is affected to a variable extent in the GY rat. For a number of metals (e.g. Fe, Mo), this may be related to the reduced bile flow; for others (e.g. Zn, Mn, Cu), other regulatory factors appear to be responsible.

Long-term feeding ecology and habitat use in harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena from Scandinavian waters inferred from trace elements and stable isotopes.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the feeding ecology and habitat use of 32 harbour porpoises by-caught in 4 localities along the Scandinavian coast from the North Sea to the Barents Sea using time-integrative markers: stable isotopes (delta13C, delta15N) and trace elements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Se, total Hg and Cd), in relation to habitat characteristics (bathymetry) and geographic position (latitude). RESULTS: Among the trace elements analysed, only Cd, with an oceanic specific food origin, was found to be useful as an ecological tracer. All other trace elements studied were not useful, most likely because of physiological regulation and/or few specific sources in the food web. The delta13C, delta15N signatures and Cd levels were highly correlated with each other, as well as with local bathymetry and geographic position (latitude). Variation in the isotopic ratios indicated a shift in harbour porpoise's feeding habits from pelagic prey species in deep northern waters to more coastal and/or demersal prey in the relatively shallow North Sea and Skagerrak waters. This result is consistent with stomach content analyses found in the literature. This shift was associated with a northward Cd-enrichment which provides further support to the Cd 'anomaly' previously reported in polar waters and suggests that porpoises in deep northern waters include Cd-contaminated prey in their diet, such as oceanic cephalopods. CONCLUSION: As stable isotopes and Cd provide information in the medium and the long term respectively, the spatial variation found, shows that harbour porpoises experience different ecological regimes during the year along the Scandinavian coasts, adapting their feeding habits to local oceanographic conditions, without performing extensive migration.

Trace elements in hair, as related to exposure in metropolitan New York.

Previous studies have revealed that trace element concentrations in hair can reflect exposure in cases of frank poisoning and deficiency. This study reports significant correlations within a single metropolitan area between trace-element content of hair and exposure (as measured by analyses for the corresponding elements in dustfall or housedust) for Ba, Cr, Pb, Hg, Ni, Sn, and V. Age, sex, hair color, and smoking habits were factors included in the statistical evaluation. Several metals increase and decrease together in the hair specimens, in agreement with trends reported for other human tissues.

Technical aspects of trace element supplementation.

Routine supplementation of total parenteral nutrition mixtures with the readily available single or combination trace elements products is becoming more widespread. As more is learned about deficiency syndromes and monitoring techniques, so too must we understand more about the physicochemical interactions between individual trace elements and other nutrients, that could ultimately affect bioavailability. Expert pharmaceutical assessment of these complex reactions, that have been demonstrated to occur in solution, becomes increasingly important in order to optimize the efficacy of micronutrient therapy.

NH4NO3 extractable trace element contents of soil samples prepared for proficiency testing--a stability study.

In view of its intended use as a sample for proficiency testing or as a reference material the stability of the extractable trace element contents of a soil from an irrigation field was tested using the extraction with 1 mol/L ammonium nitrate solution according to DIN 19730. Therefore, changes of the extractability of sterilized and non sterilized soil samples stored at different temperatures were evaluated over a period of 18 months. Sets of bottles were kept at -20 degrees C, +4 degrees C, about +20 degrees C and +40 degrees C, respectively. The NH4NO3 extractable contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined immediately after bottling and then after 3, 6, 12 and 18 months with ICP-AES or ETAAS. Appropriate storage conditions are of utmost importance to prevent deterioration of soil samples prepared for the determination of NH4NO3 extractable trace element contents. Temperatures above +20 degrees C must be avoided. The observed changes in the extractability of the metals (especially for Cr and Cu) most likely could be related to thermal degradation of the organic matter of the soil. There is no need to sterilize dry soil samples, because microbiological activity in soils with a low moisture content appears to be negligible with regard to trace element mobilization.

Blood levels of trace elements, electrolytes, and oxidative stress/antioxidant systems in epileptic patients.

Epileptic patients exhibited variably altered status of trace elements, electrolytes, and free radical scavenging enzyme activities. We investigated the effect of epilepsy and long-term antiepileptic drug therapy on the serum level of some trace elements (zinc, selenium, and copper), electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium), and antioxidants (glutathione peroxidase, and uric acid) and plasma levels of lipid peroxidation index (malondialdehyde), total antioxidant capacity, and ceruloplasmin. Seventy epileptic patients and fourteen controls were recruited in this study. In the treated group (particularly with valproate), we reported increases in the levels of zinc, calcium, sodium, malondialdehyde, and glutathione peroxidase and decreases in the levels of copper, total antioxidant capacity, and ceruloplasmin with no difference in selenium, magnesium, and potassium. However among untreated epileptics, uric acid level was increased and total antioxidant capacity was markedly lowered. We conclude that the above parameters balance differs in epileptics comparable to controls and hence their correlation to seizures pathophysiology and their degree of control or resistance to antiepileptic drug therapy. Better regulation of the lipid peroxidation and antioxidants and fewer disturbances in mineral metabolism were observed in monotherapy versus polytherapy and with carbamazepine versus valproate therapy.

Loss of myocardial viability following hypothermic perfusion storage from contaminating trace elements in the perfusate.

Two groups (A and B) of isolated baboon hearts were preserved by continuous hypothermic perfusion storage for 48 hours using perfusates that, according to the manufacturers, differed only in the concentrations of the contaminating trace elements iron, lead, and arsenic. Storage with the perfusate containing the higher concentration of these elements (perfusate B) led to significantly less gain in heart mass, a greater reduction in coronary flow, coronary sinus effluent lactate, and myocardial arteriovenous oxygen difference and a greater increase in coronary sinus effluent lactate dehydrogenase, when compared with perfusate A. Group B hearts totally failed to support the circulation following orthotopic transplantation, whereas group A hearts showed excellent function. Group B hearts had undergone the typical changes of enhanced resting myocardial tension during the storage period (before warm blood reperfusion); we proposed that these changes were brought about by the production of superoxide anions and radicals by the higher relative concentration of iron, or a combination of contaminating trace elements, in perfusate B. To confirm that these perfusates did differ significantly in the concentration of these trace elements, in particular with regard to iron, the superoxide anion activity in both solutions was measured and was found to be significantly higher in perfusate B. The addition of superoxide dismutase to both solutions inhibited superoxide anion activity by more than 80%.

[Effect of fuzheng jianpi recipe on content of trace element and immune function in children with spleen deficiency anorexia].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and prospect of Fuzheng Jianpi Recipe (FZJPR) in treating children's Spleen deficiency anorexia (CSDA) by means of observing its effect on trace element content and immune function. METHODS: One hundred and thirty cases of CSDA were treated with FZJPR, one dose per day in decoction, orally taken, 30 days for one therapeutic course. Levels of T-lymphocyte subsets, IL-2R, immunoglobulin and trace elements were determined before and after treatment, and compared with those in the control group consisted of 60 healthy children. RESULTS: In the treated group, abnormal figures were shown in T-lymphocyte subsets, especially in lowering of CD3 and CD4 count before treatment, and IgG content was reduced also. After treatment, CD3, CD4, CD4/CD8 ratio as well as IgG and IgA were improved significantly (P < 0.01), IL-2R percentage approached normal. Moreover, the levels of Zn and Fe changed significantly (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: FZJPR could improve the trace elements content and immune function in CSDA children, so it is effective in treating CSDA.

The effect of X-radiation on reticulo-endothelial system and its treatment with radiodetoxified-endotoxin and trace elements in rats.

A new in vivo method has been developed for the precise observation of RES activity. Both Escherichia coli endotoxin 100 micrograms/100 g i.v. (LPS) and radiodetoxified endotoxin 100 micrograms/100 g body weight i.v. (RD-LPS, TOLERIN) both increased the granulopectic activity of RES. The RD-LPS was more effective. The preparation containing trace elements also increased the activity of RES. The treatment consisting of the use of both trace elements and RD-LPS proved to be the most effective. The activity of RES was inversely proportional to various doses of X-ray irradiation (7, 8, 9 Gy). Trace elements and RD-LPS even improved the immunity system of animals having deteriorated RES.

[Role of trace elements in disorders and correction of metal ligand homeostasis].

Histological, biochemical, and biophysical techniques were used to examine the properties of a biocomplex compound prepared by using the well-known drug metronidazole, which affects gram-negative microbes, with the trace element zinc. The biocomplex was demonstrated to considerably enhance the efficiency of the parent ligand and to expand its action range. The new compound affected the body's immunity, promotes the recovery of its trace element balance and the development of compensatory and adaptative responses in the liver, kidney, spleen, and pancreas. The biocomplex-induced activation of regenerative processes occurred by changing the balance of 28 trace elements in the body. Changes in the skin and blood were analyzed after administration of zinc sulfate in combination with vitamin A (retinol palmitate). An assessment was made of morphological and histochemical changes in the malpighian epithelial cells while using these drugs alone and in combination.

[Control of trace elements in the rat using the heavy metal antidote "Unithiol" (sodium-2,3- dimercaptopropane sulfonate)].

The trace element balance in laboratory rats was found to be affected by somewhat lasting application of "Unitiol". Unambiguous decline of manganese, copper, and zinc concentrations was recorded from blood and liver. Complex fixation of copper was stronger than that of the other elements tested. No dose-dependent changes were observed with the experimental arrangement described. The chromium levels in all examined organs were affected but slightly or not at all. The proposal is made that long-term therapeutic use of chelate formers should be accompanied by properly balanced application of essential trace elements.

Effect of selenite on the toxicity of cis-DDP in mice: estimation of trace elements.

A significant accumulation of copper, zinc, iron, rubidium and bromine, in addition to platinum, was observed in kidneys and liver of mice treated with cis-DDP. This observation suggests that the toxicity of cis-DDP is due to the overall accumulation of trace elements and not only to the expected high platinum levels. Sodium selenite administration prior to cis-DDP results in fast clearance of all these trace elements from kidneys and liver; control levels are reached within 6 days. This may explain the important reduction in cis-DDP toxicity following selenite administration. An X-ray fluorescence (XRF) facility was used for the evaluation of the trace elements.
