Diagnosis of liver tapeworm, Stilesia hepatica, infection in sheep.

A practical method of diagnosing Stilesia hepatica in live sheep is described. Intestinal contents and faeces were sieved through a sieve with apertures of 1.0 mm onto a sieve with apertures of 100 microns to reduce volume and turbidity. The residue on the fine sieve was examined microscopically. Gravid proglottids passed through the intestine without being digested. Intact proglottids were recovered from the intestine and faeces of infected sheep. Used purely on faeces, the technique is simple and reliable as a diagnostic method. Its application could facilitate basic research into the biology and epidemiology of the parasite.

[The fauna of anoplocephalid tapeworms in domestic and wild animals of Vietnam].

101 species of oribatid mites and 12 species of helminths--anoplocephalids, transmitted by these mites, were found out by Soviet-Vietnam studies in agroecosystems and tropical forests of northern and southern Vietnam. Helminths were recorded from graminivorous mammals as follows: horses, zebu, sheep, goats, buffaloes, deer, hares, elephant, 2 species of rates, 5 species of monkeys and 11 species of birds.

[The action of albendazole on the broad tapeworm].

Studies of the effects of the anthelminthic agent albendazole on the tissues of D. latum in vivo showed large shapeless protrusions of the outer tegumental cytoplasm on the surface of strobila, the mitochondrial degeneration in the tegumental cells and their nucleolar material segregation. After in vitro treatment cavitary formations in the outer tegumental syncytium, muscular fascicle loosening, decreased glycogen levels, and altered secret granules in the vitellaria were found. Thus, albendazole might affect the biochemical system of the parasite, since there is a relationship between some biochemical processes and morphological changes.

Studies on the comparative efficacy of mebendazole, flubendazole and niclosamide against human tapeworm infections.

The efficacy of Mebendazole and Niclosamide was studied in two groups of 24 and 38 cases, respectively of patients suffering from taeniasis. Mebendazole with dose schedule of 200 and 300 mg twice daily for 3 consecutive days showed a cure rate of 71.42% and 92.30%, whereas Niclosamide at the dose rate of 200mg per patient was 94.76% effective. Flubendazole showed a cure rate of 66.66% only. Mebendazole and Niclosamide possess high taeniacidal activity, ability to reduce the clinical symptoms of taeniasis without any side effects. Niclosamide with high activity and excellent tolerance, is a drug of choice for the treatment of taeniasis in single dose treatment while for hymenolepsiasis it needs extended course.
