Modeling ruminal pH fluctuations: interactions between meal frequency and digestion rate.

A steady periodic analysis of ruminal carbohydrate digestion was developed to predict the effects of diet and frequency of eating on ruminal pH fluctuation. Tests of the model against previous data showed that pH fluctuations were too large when previously published rates of carbohydrate digestion were used but were improved using rates from an in vitro gas production system, which were lower. With the original digestion rates, the minimum meal frequency to maintain steady-state conditions in the rumen increased from 4 to 12 meals/d as dietary effective neutral detergent fiber (NDF) decreased from 34 to 6% of dry matter (DM); with the revised rates, the minimum frequency was 3 to 6 meals/d, respectively. The minimum effective NDF to maintain a pH value above 6.0 increased from 14 to 23% of DM as meal frequency decreased from steady state to 2 meals/d using the original rates; with the revised rates, the minimum effective NDF was slightly smaller, increasing from 13 to 21% of DM, respectively. Effects of DM intake and body weight on pH fluctuation were minor, and dietary buffers, when used at rates less than 1%, did not reduce fluctuation. Different methods of calculating mean ruminal pH yielded different results for the effect of meal frequency on mean pH.

Ultrastructural scoring of graded acute spinal cord injury in the rat.

OBJECT: There is a need for an accurate quantitative histological technique that also provides information on neurons, axons, vascular endothelium, and subcellular organelles after spinal cord injury (SCI). In this paper the authors describe an objective, quantifiable technique for determining the severity of SCI. The usefulness of ultrastructural scoring of acute SCI was assessed in a rat model of contusion injury. METHODS: Spinal cords underwent acute contusion injury by using varying weights to produce graded SCI. Adult Wistar rats were divided into five groups. In the first group control animals underwent laminectomy only, after which nontraumatized spinal cord samples were obtained 8 hours postsurgery. The weight-drop technique was used to produce 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-g/cm injuries. Spinal cord samples were also obtained in the different trauma groups 8 hours after injury. Behavioral assessment and ultrastructural evaluation were performed in all groups. When the intensity of the traumatic injury was increased, behavioral responses showed a decreasing trend. A similar significant negative correlation was observed between trauma-related intensity and ultrastructural scores. CONCLUSIONS: In the present study the authors characterize quantitative ultrastructural scoring of SCI in the acute, early postinjury period. Analysis of these results suggests that this method is useful in evaluating the degree of trauma and the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in neuroprotection studies.

Telemetry measured body temperature of domestic fowl at various ambient temperatures.

Adult, male Single Comb White Leghorn chickens (SCWL) were housed unrestrained in individual cages in a controlled environment room with a photoperiod of 12L:12D. By means of surgically implanted radio transmitter, body temperatures were recorded hourly for five consecutive days at each of six experimental temperatures: 23, 26, 29, 32, 35, and 38 C. The data were evaluated statistically by correlogram, periodogram, and harmonic analysis. Period length of each cycle was about 24 hr at all ambient temperatures. No significant differences in deep body temperature were observed until the ambient temperature reached 32 C; but highly significant increases were detected between 32, 35, and 38 C. Diurnal differences in body temperature ranged from .6 to 1.1 C. It has been suggested that the body temperature of male chicken may be under the control of a biological clock that synchronizes with the solar day.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for medication nonresponders with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a wait-list-controlled open trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is generally recommended for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients who have failed to respond to approved medications. However, few studies of the efficacy of CBT have selected patients who did not respond to medications. METHOD: We selected 20 adult OCD (DSM-IV criteria) patients with a history of inadequate response to adequate doses of multiple medications, as well as a high rate of comorbid disorders. After a 1-month wait-list period, patients received 15 sessions of outpatient CBT incorporating exposure and ritual prevention. RESULTS: OCD severity (as measured with the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) decreased significantly (p <.05) after treatment, and gains appeared to have been maintained over a 6-month follow-up period. Analysis of clinical significance indicated that 53% (8/15) of treatment completers met this criterion at posttreatment and 40% (6/15) met the criterion at 6-month follow-up. The sample was characterized as having generally poor insight and putting low effort into CBT; these factors significantly (p <.05) predicted degree of improvement. CONCLUSION: CBT is a useful treatment for OCD patients who have failed to respond adequately to multiple serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications. However, these results were attenuated compared with previous trials. Patients with a long history of poor response to medication may have poor insight and/or not put sufficient effort into treatment; these factors are likely to diminish treatment outcome.

A controlled trial of modified electroconvulsive therapy in schizophrenia in a Nigerian teaching hospital.

The efficacy of ECT in the treatment of Schizophrenia was investigated in a double blind controlled trial. The ICD-10 criteria for Schizophrenia were fulfilled by the 20 patients who entered the trial. Consecutive individuals who satisfied the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated to a course of (bilateral) six real or simulated ECTs each as applicable. Sixteen patients completed the ECT treatment and 20 weeks follow up period. Analysis of measures of clinical change (BPRS and SANS Scores) showed that both groups of patients improved, but the improvement of patients receiving ECT was not significantly greater than that of the control group.

Comparison of the microflora on organically and conventionally grown spring mix from a California processor.

Considerable speculation has occurred concerning the potential for higher numbers of foodborne pathogens on organically grown produce compared with produce not grown organically. The microflora composition of spring mix or mesclun, a mixture of multiple salad ingredients, grown either by organic or conventional means was determined. Unwashed or washed spring mix was obtained from a commercial California fresh-cut produce processor who does not use manure in their cultivation practices. Fifty-four samples of each type of product were supplied over a 4-month period. Analysis included enumeration of total mesophiles, psychrotrophs, coliforms, generic Escherichia coli, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and molds. In addition, spring mix was analyzed for the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The mean populations of mesophilic and psychrotrophic bacteria, yeasts, molds, lactic acid bacteria, and coliforms on conventionally grown spring mix were not statistically different (P > 0.05) from respective mean populations on organically grown spring mix. The mean population of each microbial group was significantly higher on unwashed spring mix compared with the washed product. Of the 14 samples found to contain E. coli, eight were from nonwashed conventional spring mix, one was from washed conventional spring mix, and four were from nonwashed organic spring mix. Salmonella and L. monocytogenes were not detected in any of the samples analyzed.

Play in Mayan children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of play activities and playfulness in a group of Mayan children in southern Belize. METHOD: This qualitative study involved participant observation in the daily occupations of 20 children from five Mayan families over a 2-week period. Analysis of the field notes, using open and closed coding, revealed themes specific to customs of child rearing, play activities, and playfulness. FINDINGS: The primacy of adult work is a major cultural principle that influences Mayan children's daily occupations. Parents did not encourage play but permitted play if it did not interfere with work. Children found ways to integrate play activities and playfulness into their daily occupations. CONCLUSION: The statement, "play is a child's major occupation," may not be a universally held belief. Parental values and customs of child rearing should be considered in order to provide culturally sensitive and relevant services.

Medical research in New South Wales 1993-1996 assessed by Medline publication capture.

OBJECTIVES: To assess medical research publication output in New South Wales (NSW). DESIGN: Analysis of publication information from the Medline indexing database, 1993-1996 inclusive. SETTING: Teaching hospitals and affiliated universities and medical research institutes within NSW, the major sites for NSW medical science publications. MAJOR OUTCOME MEASURES: Cumulative number and location of Medline-identified publications; journal citation indices (impact factor and immediacy index). RESULTS: 8860 published articles were captured for the analysis period. Universities and hospitals accounted for most of the publications (n = 7755). A mean of 73.1% (range, 36%-100%) of all articles were published in overseas journals, and the rest in Australian journals. This average trend applied to most universities and teaching hospitals, whereas research institutes published almost exclusively in overseas journals. Average publication impact factor values for most universities and teaching hospitals were around the average value for all NSW publications (2.203). The range for teaching hospital publications was 1.000-2.823, but for the overseas-publishing medical research institutes it tended to be higher (2.480-5.423). Immediacy index data yielded similar findings. CONCLUSIONS: The universities and teaching hospitals account for most of the medical publications arising from NSW, and also those appearing in Australian journals. Thus, these sites provide the bulk of Australian medical practice end-user information. In contrast, the medical institutes concentrate on publishing in overseas journals with higher and quicker citation rates (higher impact factor and immediacy index).

Serologic survey of white-tailed deer on Anticosti Island, Quebec for bovine herpesvirus 1, bovine viral diarrhea, and parainfluenza 3.

In 1985 unusual mortality was observed among the 3- to 4-yr-old white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Anticosti Island, Québec (Canada). A viral pathogen was suspected to be the cause of the deaths. Thus, a serologic survey for bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) virus and parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) virus was conducted. We examined 396 deer sera from 1985. Results indicated that the high mortality mainly afflicted 3- to 4-yr-old deer. In 1985, 57% of deer sampled were seropositive for viral neutralizing antibodies against BHV-1. Prevalences decreased over the next 2 yr of the survey. Prevalence of antibodies against PI-3 virus, determined by hemagglutination inhibition test, remained high (82% to 84%) for the 3 yr period. No deer were seropositive for neutralizing antibodies against BVD virus during the survey period. Analysis of antibodies against BHV-1 and PI-3 viruses according to sex, age and antibody titers revealed that an epizootic BHV-1 infection occurred in 1985; PI-3 infection appears to be enzootic in Anticosti deer.

[Treatment approaches to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Clinical features in 228 cases of posterior and lateral canalolithiasis].

After having discussed the etiopathogenesis, epidemiology and physiopathology of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), the authors present their case study covering audiovestibology out-patients treated in the last two years: 228 cases of canalotithiasis-derived BPPV, both posterior (186 cases) and lateral (42 cases). These patients were diagnosed and treated between July 1996 and July 1998 and account for 15% of the 1550 patients complaining of balance and postural disorders seen during that period. Analysis of the results shows BPPV epidemiological data that are practically the same those reported in the literature: greater incidence in females, predominance of posterior canalolithiasis and optimal use of the canalith repositioning techniques. The authors reconfirm the effectiveness of the Semont maneuver and its variations in the treatment of those forms involving the posterior semicircular canal (97% healing). As regards BPPV due to lateral canalolithiasis. The authors feel the vestibular "barbecue" rehabilitation techniques suggested by Lempert--i.e. a 270 degrees rotation starting from the decubitus position on the pathological side, rather than Baloh's traditional 360 degrees rotation--is most suitable for the treatment of BPPV stemming from lateral canalolithiasis. The Lempert technique provided satisfactory results (76% healing) and a reduction in the number of failures (24%).

Effect of normal and tumor factors on different phases of cell populations cycle.

In the present experiments we studied the effect of extracts from intact liver (LE), ES2 tumor extract (TE), plasmas from intact mice (PI), and from tumor bearing animals (PT) on different phases of hepatocytes and renocytes cell cycles. C3HS 28-day-old male mice, standardized for periodicity analysis, were injected at 16:00 hours and killed every 4 hours during a circadian cycle at 20:00/04; 00:00/08; 04:00/12; 08:00/16; 12:00/20 and 16:00/24 (time of day/hours post treatment). Colchicine (2 microg/g) was injected 4 hours before killing them. Samples of livers and kidneys were processed for histology and mitotic index determinations. The results were expressed as colchicine arrested metaphases per 1000 nuclei. The TE, LE and PI had a promoting effect on the mitotic activity of hepatocytes during the first 12 hours post treatment. During the subsequent 12 hours, not only these treatments but also the PI had an inhibiting effect on the mitotic activity of the same cell population. Also the TE and the PT had a promoting effect on the mitotic activity of the renocytes during the first 12 hours while the effect of all treatments showed a clear inhibition of the mitotic activity studied during the last 12 hours. Taking into account the time elapsed between the injections and the measurements made in these light-dark synchronized animals, we conclude that the increase in mitotic index observed in those tissues stemmed from a reinitiation of cell-cycle traverse in a subpopulation of G2-arrested, noncycling cells.

Distribution of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata, intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, within a St Lucian field habitat.

A total of 6360 mud samples were obtained, in 62 collections made with an exhaustive sampling device, from banana drains on the West Indian island of St Lucia during fortnightly samplings over a 2(1/2)-year period. Analysis of counts of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata from these samples showed that this species had a contagious distribution. This finding is consistent with other evidence that banana drains form a rigorous habitat for B. glabrata. Its distribution was more contagious than that of Oncomelania quadrasi in certain Philippine habitats and several species of aquatic snail in various African irrigation canals. The exact transformation for normalizing the snail counts for standard statistical techniques was z = x(0.287) but the more convenient cube root transformation is probably adequate. However, if too few snails are collected (15 or fewer per 100 samples) or if the frequency distribution of snail counts is discontinuous, with too many widely separated high frequency counts, neither transformation will be entirely satisfactory.

Prediction of psychotropic properties of lisuride hydrogen maleate by quantitative pharmaco-electroencephalogram.

Based on "quantitative pharmaco-EEG" using computer-analyzed EEG (CEEG) measurements, unknown CNS effects of lisuride hydrogen maleate (LHM) were established. CEEG profiles of LHM in low dosages (less than or equal to 10 mcg) are similar to CNS "inhibitory" compounds, while in higher dosages (25 mcg to 100 mcg) they resemble "psychostimulant" compounds. By measuring the brain function using computer period analysis of cerebral biopotentials, dose-efficacy relations were found (in the range of 25-75 mcg) which suggest the bioavailability of LHM at the CNS level. By comparing the CEEG profiles of LHM with the previously studied compounds, five different clinical uses of LHM were predicted. The pilot trials suggest that LHM may have therapeutic potentials in patients with "aging" and/or organic brain syndromes, and in children with behavioral disturbances.

Quantitation of adenine nucleotides in equine colonic mucosal tissue using high performance liquid chromatography.

The objectives were to use high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to validate an established method for adenine nucleotide separation in equine colonic mucosal tissue, to determine the inherent variability in the tissue and extraction method, and to determine the stability of ATP, ADP, and AMP in the tissue with time. Equine colonic mucosal tissue obtained from a single horse was immediately submersed in liquid nitrogen, and stored at -70 degrees C. Samples were lyophilized, extracted, and separated by HPLC. The limit of quantitation was 0.05 microg/mL. The coefficient of variation for the instrument was less than 10% for all nucleotides measured. When the tissue was not homogenized prior to sampling, there were significant differences in adenine nucleotide content between samples. However, when the tissue was homogenized prior to analysis, these differences were no longer significant. There was no significant decrease in ATP, ADP, or AMP content over a 54-day analysis period.

[Studies on isolation, purification and structure of polysaccharide RHG from Hedysarum polybotrys Hand.-Mazz].

A water-soluble polysaccharide, RHG, was isolated from the roots of Hedysarum polybotrys Hand.-Mazz. It was shown to be homogeneous by electrophoresis and gel filtration. Its average molecular weight was estimated to be 1.4 x 10(4). Methylation analysis, periodate oxidation, Smith degradation, IR, NMR and KI-I2 reaction showed that RHG is a (1-4) linked alpha-D-glucan to which the glucosyl side chains are attached at O-6 of the glucosyl residues of the main chain.

[To improve the quality of requisitions for radiologic examinations].

PURPOSE: This article presents the different steps implemented in order to improve the quality of requisitions for radiologic examinations in a hospital. MATERIAL: and methods. The radiology requests sent from clinical units are periodically analyzed using criteria about tracking, prescription and security required for a good examination. Results are discussed with the clinical units in order to achieve improvements. RESULTS: The periodical analysis of nonconformities shows a gradual improvement of practices. This action contributes to the realization of a single document for every request of examination or analysis in the hospital. CONCLUSION: The described action is in the context of French regulations, first about the practice of radiology, second about the obligation of quality improvement that health care facilities now have to implement for their accreditation.

The event history approach in demography.

"In the present paper, we shall examine...changes in the field of demography, by following the progression from period analysis to cohort analysis. We shall discuss the hypotheses underlying each of these approaches and show how their distance from actual human behaviour could lead to mistaken or incomplete conclusions. We shall then show how event history analysis can solve these problems and we shall define the hypotheses implied by this new approach. Finally, we shall come back to the complimentarity of the different social sciences."

Development of compensatory hepatic hyperplasia in mice carrying the hepatocellular carcinoma ES12a.

In a previous paper we reported that the presence of the hepatocellular carcinoma SS1K in host mice resulted in an earlier appearance of the hepatocyte mitotic peak during liver regeneration after a partial hepatectomy as well as in an increase in the amplitude of that mitotic wave. In the present work we analyse the effect of another hepatocellular carcinoma, the ES12a (HCES12a). Adult male mice of the C3H/S strain standardised for circadian-periodicity analysis, were used. One group received a subcutaneous graft of the HCES12a tumor, while another group served as control. Fifteen days later, all animals were submitted to a partial (70%) hepatectomy at 10:00 h and beginning at 16:00 h lots of between 5 and 9 host and control animals each were sacrificed at 4 h intervals until 16:00 h on the third day thereafter. All mice were injected with 2 microg/g colchicine 4 hrs before killing, and samples of livers were processed for hematoxylin-eosin staining. We determined the hepatocyte mitotic index for each animal and the mean value +/- the standard error of the mean for each lot. The peak of mitotic activity in the tumor-bearing animals took place four hours earlier than in control mice but the average values of hepatocytic mitotic activity were similar in both groups
