Evaluation of the microbial quality of water supplies to municipal, mining and squatter communities in the Bindura urban area of Zimbabwe.

A survey of the microbiological and chemical quality of water supplies in the Bindura urban and peri-urban area was carried out over a three-year period from January 2000 to July 2003. Bindura is the provincial city of Mashonaland Central, situated 88 km from the national capital, Harare. Large-scale farming and mining activities in the area predispose water bodies to eutrophication and chemical pollutants, raising concerns about the safety of local water supplies. In this study, thermotolerant (faecal) coliform levels, total aerobic bacterial counts and physicochemical profiles were determined for municipal and borehole water as well as water supplies to mining and squatter communities. Although municipal and mining compound water supplies were of satisfactory microbial and chemical quality, borehole water supplies showed a seasonal fluctuation, with higher coliform counts in the wet season from November to March. Stream water supplies to a squatter camp in the peri-urban area consistently recorded coliform levels >1,800/100 mL and total aerobic plate counts of <2.8 x 10(6) CFU/mL. All cholera incidents recorded in 1999 and 2000 at the Provincial hospital were from peri-urban settlements and surrounding commercial farms while 1,045 to 2,632 cases of dysentery were also reported each year at the provincial hospital during the period 1997-2002.

Influence of the Haizhou Open Pit Coal Mine on the atmospheric flow over Fuxin, China.

The influence of the Haizhou Open Pit Mine on the atmospheric flow in nearby Fuxin City in China was analyzed with the aid of the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. The finite element method was used to obtain numerical solutions to these equations. The results showed that the Haizhou Open Pit Coal Mine contributes to the turbulent flow in the Fuxin City and its surroundings. However, when compared with the climatic effects, the open pit mine has a relatively small impact on the atmospheric flow over Fuxin.

Heavy metal concentrations in redeveloping soil of mine spoil under plantations of certain native woody species in dry tropical environment, India.

Total concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Ni, Mn and Zn) was estimated in the redeveloping soil of mine spoil under 5-yr old plantations of four woody species namely: Albizia lebbeck, Albizia procera, Tectona grandis and Dendrocalamus strictus. The data recorded in the present study were compared with other unplanted coal mine spoil colliery, which was around to the study site and adjoining area of dry tropical forest. Among all the heavy metals, the maximum concentration was found for Fe and minimum for Cd. However, among all four species, total concentrations of these heavy metals were recorded maximally in the plantation plots of T. grandis except for Fe, while minimally in A. lebbeck except for Zn, whereas, the maximum concentration of Fe and Zn was in the plantation plots of D. strictus and A. procera. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences due to species for all the heavy metals except Cu. Among four species, A. lebbeck, A. procera and D. strictus showed more efficient for reducing heavy metal concentrations whereas T. grandis was not more effective to reduce heavy metal concentrations in redeveloping soil of mine spoil.

[Soil microflora over the closed Donbas mines].

Composition of soil air and microflora in different soil horizons (to 30 cm depth) over some closed Donbas coal mines has been studied. The intensive methane leakages have been found in some soil zones over the closed coal mines. This results in formation of explosive and inflammable gas mixtures. Methane content in soil gas mixtures could vary from trace amounts to 34 %. The essential decrease of oxygen (to 3-4%) and increasing (up to 5 %) of CO2 concentrations that evidences for active microbiological processes in such soils is marked in the latter case. Methanotrophic bacteria involving methane into biogenic cycle are widespread (up to 106 cells per 1 g) in methane-containing soils over the closed coal mines. Microorganisms of different physiological groups in the community with methanotrophic bacteria were found in the given technogenic econiche.

Managing trauma in the South African mining industry.

Deep sub-surface mining is one of South Africa s leading industries. It is also one of the most dangerous. While safety is maintained as much as possible to minimize cave-ins and other accidents, underground tremors and earthquakes are commonplace and unpredictable and usually involve life threatening injuries and loss of life. Crisis intervention and trauma management are essential to helping workers cope with mining accidents. This article describes the trauma management program developed by the employee assistance program at the Chamber of Mines in South Africa to respond to workplace accidents.

Effect of heavy metals on soil microbial activity and diversity in a reclaimed mining wasteland of red soil area.

The microbial biomass, basal respiration and substrate utilization pattern in copper mining wasteland of red soil area, southern China, were investigated. The results indicated that soil microflora were obviously different compared with that of the non-mine soil. Microbial biomass and basal respiration were negatively affected by the elevated heavy metal levels. Two important microbial ecophysiological parameters, namely, the ratio of microbial biomass C(Cmic)/organic C(Corg) and metabolic quotient(qCO2) were closely correlated to heavy metal stress. There was a significant decrease in the Cmic/Corg ratio and an increase in the metabolic quotient with increasing metal concentration. Multivariate analysis of Biolog data for sole carbon source utilization pattern demonstrated that heavy metal pollution had a significant impact on microbial community structure and functional diversity. All the results showed that soil microbiological parameters had great potential to become the early sensitive, effective and liable indicators of the stresses or perturbations in soils of mining ecosystems.

Development of ground vegetation under exotic tree plantations on restored coal mine spoil land in a dry tropical region of India.

Restoration of mine spoil is a prime need for coal industry. The study of ground cover vegetation provides essential information about the species diversity and their successional trends during the restoration. The present study was conducted to analyze the structure and biomass accumulation of ground vegetation developing in different plantation stands of an opencast coal mine spoil in a dry tropical region. Different plantation stands showed variations in species diversities. Exotic herbs were more dominant in comparison to native herbs. Pennisetum pedicillatum, an exotic herb showed maximum Importance Value Index in most of the plantation stands. Total number of species varied between 12-18 in different plantation stands. Speces richness and evenness increased with increasing age of the plantations. Variations in total biomass accumulation of ground vegetation were also significant among different plantations. These results suggest that reforestation programme with exotic species on coal mine spoil has been successful in colonization of ground vegetation under different plantations. Gravellia pteridifolia plantations showed most successful ground cover among different plantation stands.

Expression of c-fos and oxidative stress on brain of rats reared on food from mercury-selenium coexisting mining area.

Wanshan mercury mine is the largest mercury deposit in Guizhou Province of China, but there were few reports on mercury toxic effect in the mining area. In order to study the neurotoxicity of food from Wanshan mercury mine area and probe into the effect of food from Wanshan mercury miner area on the changes of brain oxidative damage and expression of c-fos gene. The rats were exposed to mercury contaminated food for 20 d. The content of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), GSH-peroxidase (GSH-px) and Glutathione (GSH) in rat brain was measured, and the effect of mercury contaminated rice on the expression of c-fos mRNA in rat brain and the expression of c-FOS protein in cortex, hippocampus were observed using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunocytochemical methods. The results showed the levels of GSH, MDA, SOD and of GSH-dependent enzymes in the rat brain changed between exposure groups and control group; The mercury polluted rice induced significantly the expression of c-fos mRNA; the c-FOS positive cells in hippocampus and cortex of exposure groups were significant different from control group (P<0.01). It could be concluded that oxidative stress signals could contribute to the induction of immediate early genes (IEGs); free radicals and their by-products might not only cause oxidative damage, but also influenced gene expression; IEGs c-fos participated in the toxicity process of brain injury by mercury polluted food.

[Mercury exchange fluxes between air and soil interface over different type of land in Wanshan Hg mine area].

Air/soil Hg exchange fluxes were measured using field chamber-automated air mercury analyzer method over different land in Wanshan Hg mine area in two seasons. The results showed that the air/soil Hg exchange fluxes were very strong. The highest Hg emission flux from soil was 27 827 ng/(m2 x h), the highest Hg deposition flux from the atmosphere was 9 434 ng/(m2 x h). Because of Hg emission from anthropogenic activities and natural lands, the Hg concentrations in air in Wanshan Hg mine area are 1 - 3 orders of magnitude greater than background area. The highest average Hg concentration in air reached 1 101.8 ng/m3, and the lowest average Hg concentration in air still reached 17.8 ng/m3. These indicated that the atmosphere was polluted seriously in Wanshan Hg mine area. The Hg exchange fluxes are influenced by solar irradiation and the Hg concentrations in air. The solar irradiation accelerates the Hg emission from soil. Conversely, the Hg concentration in air restrained the Hg emission from soil, and even leads the Hg concentration depositing to soil surface. The Hg emission fluxes from uncovered soil are higher than that from covered soil by vegetations significantly. And the slag becomes net atmospheric Hg source.

[Risks of malignant neoplasms in workers in Czechoslovak uranium mines].

The authors present a historical account on the findings which made it possible to define the most serious occupational disease in miners in uranium mines--bronchogenic carcinoma. In 1952-61 44 cases of lung cancer were reported in conjunction with radioactive substances, in 1962-85 already 1511 patients were recompensated. Z. Vích found in a prospective epidemiological survey that of 4803 workers who left for preventive reasons work places involving risk in 1968-75 20.5% died by 1985. The mortality rate from lung tumors was 3.5 times higher than in the male population of the Czech Republic. The authors analyze occupational risk indicators important for the prevention of this occupational disease. From the medical aspect the restriction of mining in uranium mines is welcome, as the work involves a high risk.

[Evaluation of occupational exposure of workers engaged in mining of rock raw materials in the Sleza massif].

In two serpentinite mines and in a factory producing asphalt pavements using serpentinite, exposure to dusts and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (WWA-fraction soluble in benzene) was assessed. In rock samples taken in the serpentinite mine and in dust samples from work posts crystalline phases were determined (using X-ray radiography and spectrometry in infrared). Also, morphology of dust particles was performed using electron microscopy. Both in the rock samples and in dust fibrous antigorite, a mineral of strong cancerogenic properties, was found. Total dust concentrations varied between 1.05 and 280 mg/m3, concentration of respirable mineral fibres from 0.01 to 3.56 fibre/cm3, and concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons varied between 266.7 and 850 micrograms/m3. The study will be continued concerning evaluation of biological effect of serpentinite in animal experiments and assessment of extraoccupational exposure of people living in the neighbourhood of serpentinite mines and plants processing this mineral.

[Evaluation of general toxicity of detergent Rokafenol-8 and its effect on the aggressiveness of coal mine dust].

Experiments aimed at testing the toxicity of the detergent (Rokafenol N-8) and determination of the biological effect of the detergent and mine dust with respect to histopathological changes in some internal organs were performed on albino rats and rabbits. The acute toxicity testing was based on determination of the medial lethal dose (LD50) after intragastric administration. Irritating action of the detergent on skin and eye was evaluated. The influence of the detergent on the aggressiveness of selected mine dusts was estimated by means of the intraperitoneal test. White rats were administered with a single intraperitoneal injection: 50 mg dust (I and III), 50 mg dust suspended in 1% Rokafenol N-8 (II and IV), 1 ml of 1% Rokafenol N-8 (V). The animals were subject to dissection after 6 weeks and 6 months. The influence of the detergent on the aggressiveness of mine dusts was assessed on the basis of internal organs histopathological examinations. According to Hodge and Sterne Chemical Substance Toxicity Classifications, the evaluated detergent was found to be a weakly toxic substance. Rokafenol N-8 has not induced any skin lesions in the experimental animals. No inflammatory reaction was found after administration of 1% detergent solution into the conjunctical sac, whereas 100% solution induced panophthalmia. Histopathological examinations have shown that the detergent (Rokafenol N-8) affects increasingly the dust induced pathomorphotic changes (primarily parenchymatous degeneration of liver).

[Biological testing of fibrogenic effect of dust from the "Gliwice" mine on the lung tissue].

Animal study was carried out to determine biological aggressiveness of mining dust by means of pulmonary tests. Dust samples, 50 mg settled dust, a mixture from 3 different mine layers (sample A) and 50 mg dust collected by the gravimetric method from different mine layers (sample B) were administered in two respective test groups by a single intratracheal injection. Silica content, determined according to Polezhayev, was found to range from 4.6% (sample A) to 12.7% (sample B). In months 3 and 6 of the experiment lung content of hydroxyproline was determined following Stegemann. Biochemical tests for hydroxyproline content revealed highest increase in the lungs of Group 2 animals 6 months after the onset of the experiment (10.312 mg). Very similar result was obtained in Group 1, with injected settled dust mixture: hydroxyproline level amounted to 10.214 mg. Both sample A and sample B induced elevated level of lung hydroxyproline although silica content in dust sample differed considerably. The study revealed that the biological aggressiveness of settled dust was not proportionate to the content of pure silica. It is thought that increased fibrogenic potentials of the settled dust may have resulted from defected crystalline structure of silica due to the grinding of the mineral in a hand-mill.

Field monitoring versus individual miner dosimetry of radon daughter products in mines.

The paper presents the results realised simultaneously by two different and independent systems of measurement of an assessment of miners' exposure to radon daughter products which naturally occur in the air of mines. The first one, called the Air Sampling System (ASS), was based on the field monitoring of radon progeny in air, the second one, called the Individual Dosimetry System (IDS), was based on the individual dosimeters worn by miners. Experimental comparison of these two systems has been conducted for six years in eleven Polish underground metal-ore mines. This study reveals that no correlation exists between the concentration and annual miners' exposures evaluated by the ASS and IDS. The ratio ASS/IDS for mine population varies from 11.0 to 0.14 in respect of annual concentration means, and in respect to annual exposures, this ratio varies from 4.5 to 0.14. The conclusion to be drawn from six years' observation and comparison of both systems is that correct and true evaluation of miners' exposure to radon progeny can be made only by the use of the Individual Dosimetry System, since the Air Sampling System is too sensitive and too dependent on the Strategy of sampling and its radiation.

[Air pollution by 3,4-benzo(a)pyrene in mines using self-propelled equipment with diesel motors].

The study was designed to analyse air pollution by 3,4-benz(a)pyrene released together with exhaust gases in 3 underground mines where self-propelled machines with diesel engines are used. Concentration levels for 3,4-BP have been identified in air, dust, sweeping away and scraping off the walls of the mine working surface. It is demonstrated that in a great number of samples 3,4-BP concentration exceeds MAC. A technique for 3,4-BP air sampling and analysis has been studied by means of liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Hygienic recommendations on decreasing 3,4-BP release into the mine air are set forth.

[Work conditions and health status of workers in coal mining open pits of the Kansk-Achinsk fuel-energy complex and the Southern Yakutsk coal complex].

A hygienic assessment of the working conditions at the open-cast mines of KATEK and YuYaUK showed that the conditions were better at KATEK than at the Neryungrin mine, due to milder climate, non-transport system of stripping, wheel-type trenching, and railway transport in the mining areas. No cases of occupational disease were registered. The working conditions and the character of work may influence the general morbidity, in particular the development of cardiovascular disease. The efficacy of health promotion actions is analysed and recommendations on further improvement of the working conditions are presented.

[The effect of occupational stress on blood pressure of miners in ore mines].

It was tried to analyse the influence of occupational load on the blood pressure reaction of miners. 200 miners at the age of 25-45 years with a large number of simultaneously affecting loadings at the place of work were examined with regard to the incidence of hypertension within a period of 5 years. The incidence of hypertension was 0.90%. To investigate the blood pressure reactions during an eight-hour shift we chose 2 technologies of mining differing concerning the loading factors, especially the intensity of physical load. In each case 5 miners of the technologies propulsion and mining were examined before the descent, during the eight-hour shift and after having finished the shift and the blood pressure was taken paying attention to standard conditions. The systolic blood pressure taken during an underground mining shift was significantly lower than the systolic blood pressure before the descent and after the shift, while a slight ascent of the diastolic blood pressure was insignificant. In spite of the different physical load we found no signs for a relevant displacement of the blood pressure level. A influence of working on the blood pressure reaction was found neither in the incidence of hypertension nor in the measurements of the blood pressure during an eight-hour miner's shift.
