Hemisphere differences and judgments of simultaneity of brief light flashes.

A series of experiments was conducted to investigate the possibility of hemispheric specialization for judgments of the simultaneity of two light flashes. Right-handed subjects adjusted two light flashes until they appeared simultaneous. The comparison of measures derived from the two possible orders of the light flashes suggested that the right hemisphere of right-handed subjects performed the function of ordering visual stimuli in time. Two further experiments examined an alternative explanation, that of a left-to-right scanning mechanism, the results of which also suggested a hemisphere explanation. The results of these experiments are discussed in terms of previous research and theories which located a temporal ordering mechanism in the speech hemisphere.

Lysine availability in flash-dried blood meals for swine.

The available lysine content of three flash-dried blood meals was determined by use of a pig growth assay. Pigs that were 5 to 6 wk old were fed either one of the reference diets or one of the test diets for the 4-wk period of each assay. The reference diets were a corn-soybean meal basal (B) that was deficient in lysine, B+.1% L-lysine and B+.2% L-lysine. The test diets were B plus 1.5% and 3.0% of blood meal. The available lysine levels (percentage as fed) of ring-dried cattle blood meal, ring-dried swine blood meal and drum-dried cattle blood meal were determined to be 6.9, 7.4 and 6.7, respectively. All three flash-dried blood meals appeared to have similar available lysine levels and a value of 7% lysine may be used to formulate diets containing flash-dried blood meals. Incorporation of 3 or 6% drum-dried blood meal into starter diets improved N retention over a corn-soybean meal diet and did not reduce N-corrected metabolizable energy density of the diet.

Flash echo gray scale imaging with subtraction in assessment of small hepatocellular carcinoma treated with percutaneous ethanol injection: preliminary report.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the therapeutic effect of percutaneous ethanol injection on small hepatocellular carcinoma by using a flash echo imaging system, a newly developed technique for detecting echoes from microbubble contrast agents more efficiently. METHODS: Six patients with 7 small nodular hepatocellular carcinomas, proved by fine-needle aspiration cytologic or pathologic examination, were included. Percutaneous ethanol injection was performed until there was no intratumoral color signal on conventional color and power Doppler ultrasonography. A bubble contrast agent was then injected, and flash echo imaging in the subtraction mode was performed for assessment of the therapeutic effect. Dynamic computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and hepatic angiography were also used for evaluation of the therapeutic effect. RESULTS: Five tumors had perfusion defects that were equal in size to or larger than the tumors. No tumor stain was shown on hepatic angiography. Two tumors had partial perfusion defects. Viable tumors were confirmed by tumor resection in 1 case and cytologic examination in the other. CONCLUSIONS: Our preliminary results show that flash echo imaging with subtraction has potential value in evaluation of the therapeutic effect of percutaneous ethanol injection on small hepatocellular carcinoma.

Early magnocellular loss in glaucoma demonstrated using the pseudorandomly stimulated flash visual evoked potential.

PURPOSE: Components of the pseudorandomly stimulated flash visual evoked potential (VEP) have now been identified that appear to arise predominantly from each of the magnocellular (M-cell) and parvocellular (P-cell) systems. In this study, the relative damage to magnocellular and parvocellular systems at different stages of glaucoma using pseudorandomly stimulated flash VEP was investigated. METHODS: Pseudorandomly stimulated flash VEP was recorded in 15 normal eyes and 28 eyes with different stages of glaucoma using the VERIS-3 recording system (Electro-Diagnostic Imaging, San Francisco, CA). Two levels of luminance contrast of the stimulus (32% and 99%) were tested. The first slice of the second-order kernel from only the central (8 degrees) stimulated area was extracted for analysis. RESULTS: Data recorded from normal eyes demonstrated early saturation of the response/contrast function of the first slice of the second-order kernel. The ratio of the VEP amplitude recorded at 32% and 99% of the luminance contrast was close to unity. In eyes with early glaucoma, although the amplitude of the responses to both low- and high-contrast stimulation decreased, the relative reduction of the low-contrast VEP (M-cell) was more prominent. However, the amplitude of the high-contrast response (P-cell) declined more rapidly later in the disease. CONCLUSION: These results are consistent with relatively earlier damage of the magnocellular pathway in glaucoma.

Endometrial carcinoma: multisection dynamic MR imaging using a three-dimensional FLASH technique during breath holding.

PURPOSE: Our aim was to investigate the usefulness of multisection dynamic MR imaging using a 3D FLASH technique during breath holding in assessing myometrial invasion by endometrial carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight endometrial carcinomas were evaluated with pathologic correlation. Dynamic MR imaging was performed using the 3D FLASH technique during breath holding. We compared accuracy in the assessment of myometrial invasion by endometrial carcinoma between T2-weighted images, contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images, and dynamic MR images. RESULTS: The accuracy rates in estimating myometrial invasion with T2-weighted images, contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images, and dynamic MR images were 64.3%, 67.8%, and 85.7%, respectively. Statistically significant differences were seen between dynamic MR images and both T2-weighted images and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. CONCLUSION: Multisection dynamic MR imaging using the 3D FLASH technique during breath holding is useful for the evaluation of myometrial invasion by endometrial carcinoma with polypoid growth or an unclear junctional zone on T2-weighted images.

[Histochemical studies of the sensitivity of frog retinal cells to stimulus movement and flashes].

The technique of quantitative UV-cytophotometry of RNA was used for comparative study of the sensitivity of frog retina cells to the movement of stimuli and flashings. A corresponding set of stimulators which includes the movement of mounted stimuli and heterogenous flashings of diffuse light showed that a type of cells exists in the interior nuclear layer of the retina which is specifically sensitive to the movement. It is suggested that in the formation of this property a dynamic reciprocal lateral inhibition on the level between bipolar and amacrine cells takes place. Application of heterogenous flashing light allowed also to reveal functional variety of bipolar cells.

Role of Cerenkov radiation in the eye-flashes observed by Apollo astronauts.

Visual phenomena in the form of colorless flashes of light were observed by astronauts in deep space when their eyes were closed and adapted to darkness. We describe in this paper laboratory experiments and calculations which indicate that many of these flashes are the result of visible light generated within the astronauts' eyeball in the form of Cerenkov radiation when a relativistic HZE particle traverses it. The sensitivity to Cerenkov radiation measured for three subjects exposed to pulses of pions and muons and the visual phenomena observed were found to be consistent with the reports of flashes observed at rates as high as 2 per minute on Apollo missions 11 through 17.

[A new adjuvant therapy modality in the treatment of superficial bladder carcinoma. Study of feasibility of postoperative radiotherapy "flash"].

The Authors present the preliminary results of a feasibility study on the use of adjuvant radiotherapy (6 Gy single fraction, postoperatively, "flash") as a new treatment modality for superficial bladder cancer (Ta-T1, N0, M0, previously relapsed or not, G I-III). The rationale for this study derives mainly from the favourable results obtained with external beam radiotherapy, when applied before interstitial radiotherapy as a method to avoid scar relapses. Data regarding 55 cases treated with the "flash" are compared retrospectively with those regarding more than 100 cases treated with different types of "conventional" adjuvant therapy at the INRCA Center of Urology, during the last 3-4 years. The Authors stress the need for a prospective, randomized study of selected cases, to clarify if an adjuvant therapeutic modality is superior to the others. The radiotherapeutic option ("flash"), however, clearly produces less iatrogenic damage than the others, and is simpler and cheaper.

NFPA 70E: Performing the electrical flash hazard analysis.

Arc flash hazards pose a serious risk to employee safety; proper safe work practices must be utilized. Electrical equipment > or = 50 volts must be deenergized and locked out/tagged out prior to servicing and maintenance unless doing so would increase hazards or is infeasible. Remember, convenience is not an acceptable reason for keeping equipment energized during servicing and maintenance. If electrical equipment must remain energized during Servicing and maintenance, NFPA 70E should be consulted to determine flash hazard boundaries as well as required PPE. Finally, circuit breakers and electrical disconnects must be marked to warn qualified employees of potential arc flash hazards.

Evaluation of peracetic acid permeation during flash sterilization through pharmaceutical plastic polymers used in cytotoxic reconstitution units.

Peracetic acid (PAA) permeation in flash sterilization was studied using three different plastic infusion bags made of polypropylene and polyethylene, filled with glucose 5% or NaCl 0.9%. The pH was measured and acetic acid (AA) and PAA concentrations were made by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). PAA was derivatized by oxidation of methyl tolyl sulfide (MTS) into methyl tolyl sulfoxide (MTSO) detected by ultraviolet (UV) absorbance at 230 nm. The technique has a sensitivity of 0.3 microg x L(-1) and was highly specific. Results showed that pH measurements remain constant and demonstrated the absence of PAA permeation, which was confirmed by the absence of AA permeation regardless of the brand tested, with both unwrapped and overwrapped infusion bags, when flash sterilization is applied. These results allow flash sterilization to be performed with unwrapped infusion bags without any risk of drug degradation by PAA. This makes compounding safer and easier, which improves productivity.

[Nuclear magnetic resonance tomography of the liver with Turbo FLASH].

A Turbo FLASH sequence consisting of an initial non-selective 180 degree inversion pulse followed by an ultrafast FLASH sequence with very short repetition and echo times (TR = 7 ms, TE = 4 ms) was used to study 20 patients with focal liver lesions. The results were compared to T1-weighted gradient-echo (108/5/80 for TR/TE/flip angle) and T2-weighted spin-echo sequences (TR/TE/excitations = 2500 ms/40 ms, 90 ms, 140 ms/2). Liver-spleen contrast of the fast scans was superior to T1- and T2-weighted images for TI = 300 ms (0.59 +/- 0.12 vs 0.33 +/- 0.07 and 0.42 +/- 0.14 respectively). Liver-lesion contrast of the fast scans for TI = 300-700 ms was superior to the T1-weighted gradient echo sequence (0.49 +/- 0.21 vs 0.23 +/- 0.09), equal to the T2-weighted spin echo sequence for TE = 90 ms (0.54 +/- 0.17) but inferior to the 140 ms echo (0.63 +/- 0.18). On Turbo FLASH scans, there were no flow or motion artifacts and lesions borders and structures were better delineated than on the spin-echo images. Imaging time for the whole liver is less than a minute.

[Fast MR imaging of liver metastasis using FLASH and FISP--optimal sequences for T1- and T2*-weighted images].

This paper deals with a study to obtain the optimal sequence of gradient echo (GE) for T1- and T2*-weighted images similar to T1- and T2-weighted images of spin echo (SE). Two GE sequences, fast low angle shot (FLASH) and fast imaging with steady-state precession (FISP), were performed in 15 cases of liver metastasis in various combination of flip angle (FA), repetition time (TR), and echo time (TE). The optimal combinations were summarized as follows: 1) T1-weighted FLASH image with FA of 40 degrees, TR of 22 msec and TE of 10 msec, 2) T1-weighted FISP image with FA of 70 degrees, TR of 100 msec, TE of 10 msec, 3) both T2*-weighted FLASH and FISP images with FA of 10 degrees, TR of 100 msec and TE of 30 msec. Not only to provide the adequate T1- and T2*-weighted images but also to enable breath-holding MR imaging, GE sequences can optionally take place SE in cases of deteriorated images caused by moving artifacts. Other applications support the re-examination and further detailing when required, conveniently rather in short time.

[Study of electron transport in the photosynthetic systems of higher plants by the ESR method. VI. Kinetics of photo-induced P700 redox transitions in a system of continuous and flash illumination of different duration].

The kinetics of P700 redox-transients in leaves and isolated been and spinach chloroplasts was studied by the ESR method. P700 oxidation after a short flash (less than 10 microseconds) of white light was not resolved. P700 oxidation may be resolved only after "long" (more than 500 microseconds) flash of red light (700 or 720 nm) with a slow reduction of P700+ in the dark. In case of 500 microseconds flash exciting both photosystems (600 nm) P700 response was not observed. Fast P700+ reduction was observed if the short pulse of white light was given simultaneously with a continuous background 707 nm light. We can conclude from these data that P700+ accepts an electron from its primary donor within 10--500 microseconds.

Different laminar distribution of flash evoked potentials in cortical areas 17 and 18 b of freely moving rats.

The laminar distribution of flash evoked field potential (VEP) was investigated in the visual cortical areas 17 and 18 b in freely moving rats. Averaged VEPs were recorded during stable relaxed wakefulness characterized behaviorally and polygraphically. The depth profiles of the main VEP components displayed polarity reversals in lamina V in every electrode track through area 17 while no polarity reversal was observed in any track through area 18 b. The primary negative component (N30) had an amplitude maximum in lamina IV in both areas. Current source-density analysis (CSD) in connection with amplitude depth profiles indicated that the surface-negative component N30 is generated mainly by the synaptic excitatory inputs in lamina IV. The negative peak of the flash-evoked afterdischarges in area 17 are generated the same way. The data imply a more concentrated field generator in area 17 with densely packed cellular elements responding synchronously to the flash. In area 18 b, either the anatomical distribution or the temporal relationship of the responding elements seems to be different.

Optimization of sequence parameters in fast MR imaging of the brain with FLASH.

Owing to the intrinsically complex behavior of the signal intensity of fast gradient-refocusing MR sequences, agreement as to the clinically most useful sequence parameters has not yet been reached. This study evaluates the FLASH (fast low-angle shot) sequence for gray-white matter differentiation on normal volunteers at 1.5 T. The FLASH gradient-echo sequence is essentially T1-dependent. For very fast imaging and T1 weighting, the following parameters yield the best results: a flip angle of 30-50 degrees with TR = 20 and TE = 10. To replace T1-weighted SE by the faster FLASH sequence, the best results are achieved by a flip angle of 70-120 degrees with TR = 150-300 and TE = 10 (or shorter, if possible). The most valuable proton-density aspect is achieved by a flip angle of 30 degrees with TR = 300 and TE = 16.

Pattern and flash evoked responses in disseminated and selective optic pathway damage.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), an increase in delay in visual evoked responses (VER) may be important, but an earlier change is the behaviour of the wave-shape; amplitude is always lower even in MS patients without subjective visual symptoms, provided not only flash but also pattern stimulation is used. Normal amplitude with pattern stimulation does not necessarily mean normal amplitude with flash stimulation. Combining both stimulation methods, we found lowering of amplitude and change of wave-shape in 100 per cent of cases while latency was increased in only 77 per cent. Flash and pattern VER might be even more pathognomonic in MS than oligoclonal gammaglobulin fractionation on agar, which is positive in 75 per cent of cases. We recommend that subclinical cases of MS should be submitted to full electro-oculographic investigation. Patients with sectoral ischaemic neuropathy and open angle glaucoma (OAG) show the same findings; this emphasizes that the method is not specific for demyelinating diseases, nor selective for papillo-macular bundle involvement, but that VER, considering only its first components, reflects axonal damage somewhere in the visual pathway.

Cholera toxin, cyclic AMP, and the firefly flash.

Cholera toxin, injected into living fireflies, caused a delayed, non-hormone-dependent activation of adenylate cyclase, an elevation of cyclic AMP levels, and a brilliant persistent glow of the firefly light organ 8-20 hours following injection. During periods of spontaneous flashing, onset of toxin-induced glowing was abrupt and step-like in character, due to a markedly prolonged off-time of individual flashes. These observations provide a striking demonstration of the mechanism of cholera toxin action, and, together with other data, suggest that the initiation of the normal adult firefly flash is mediated through elevation of cyclic AMP levels secondary to the activation of an octopamine-sensitive adenylate cyclase.

[Dynamic contrast medium studies with flash sequences in nuclear magnetic resonance tomography of the breast].

In this study the dynamic contrast behavior after Gd-DTPA of different breast tissues and tumors has been investigated with a series of T1-weighted FLASH-sequences during the first 5 minutes after the application of Gd-DTPA. The results of these dynamic FLASH-measurements have been compared to the results of the SE-sequences 6-10 and 11-15 minutes after Gd-DTPA in 40 patients with 54 different breast tissues. It could be shown that in a number of cases a better differentiation (e.g. DD between carcinomas and proliferative dysplasia) was possible on FLASH-scans early after contrast medium than on the late SE-scans. Only the distinction between non-proliferative and proliferative dysplasia was better on the late SE-scans. Evaluation of the enhancement dynamics may be helpful in some cases as an additional information. Further investigations are necessary to confirm these findings and to assess their value.
