Pregnancy rate in beef heifers after synchronization to either random or programmed estrous cycles.

We hypothesized that heifers in diestrus at the beginning of a Syncro-Mate-B (SMB) regimen would have higher pregnancy rates to AI than heifers not in diestrus and that administration of a PGF2alpha analogue 11 d before a SMB regimen would increase pregnancy rates to AI. In both replicate years of Exp. 1, heifers (n = 150) were classified by stage of the estrous cycle at the beginning of a SMB regimen (d 0). Following implant removal (d 9), heifers were artificially inseminated 12 h after the onset of estrus (95.5% in estrus by 72 h). Blood samples were collected for progesterone (P4) analysis on d 0, 9, and 20. Pregnancy rates did not differ between yr 1 and 2. Pregnancy rate for heifers classified in diestrus (53.6%; n = 69) was higher (P = 0.06) than for heifers in metestrus (43.7%; n = 48). Pregnancy rate for proestrus (44.4%; n = 18) heifers was not different from that for heifers in the metestrus or diestrus groups. Mean plasma P4 concentration was affected by both treatment and day. Pregnancy rate was higher (P < 0.01) for heifers with P4 > 1 ng/mL plasma (51.6%; n = 120) than for heifers with P4 < or = 1 ng/mL plasma (23.3%; n = 30) on d 0. In Exp. 2, beef heifers (Santa Cruz; n = 195) were allotted to two treatments. Heifers (n = 98) in the control group were administered a conventional SMB treatment. Heifers (n = 97) in the PGF group were injected with PGF2alpha 11 d (d -11) before a SMB regimen. Progesterone concentration was determined from blood samples collected on d -11, -2, 0, and 9. All heifers were artificially inseminated 48 to 50 h after implant removal. At the beginning of the SMB regimen (d 0), a greater (P < 0.05) percentage of PGF (74.2%) than of control heifers (59.2%) were in diestrus (P4 > 1 ng/mL). Mean P4 concentration was not affected by treatment or day x treatment but differed (P < 0.05) among days. Pregnancy rate of cycling heifers was similar for PGF (36%) and control heifers (35.9%). Pregnancy rate was higher (P < 0.01) for heifers with P4 > 1 ng/mL plasma (37.6%) than for heifers with P4 < or = 1 ng/mL plasma (18.5%) on d 0. These results support the hypothesis that fertility is enhanced when a progestin synchrony regimen is initiated during diestrus, but methods to program estrous cycles to increase fertility warrant investigation.

Ovarian follicular wave synchronization and induction of ovulation in postpartum beef cows.

An experiment was designed to evaluate a) the effect of a progesterone-estradiol combined treatment on ovarian follicular dynamics in postpartum beef cows, and b) ovulation and the subsequent luteal activity after short-term calf removal and GnRH agonist treatment. Multiparous Angus cows (25 to 40 d after calving) were assigned to the following treatments: untreated (Control, n = 9); short term calf removal (CR, n = 8); progesterone (CIDR, n = 9) and progesterone plus estradiol-17 beta (CIDR + E-17 beta, n = 9). Progesterone treatment (CIDR) lasted 8 d and the day of device insertion was considered as Day 0. Cows in the CIDR + E-17 beta group also received an i.m. injection of 5 mg of E-17 beta on Day 1. On Day 8, calves were removed for 48 h (CR, CIDR and CIDR + E-17 beta groups) and 6 h before the end of calf removal these cows also received an i.m. injection of 8 micrograms of Busereline (GnRH). Anestrus was confirmed in all cows by the absence of luteal tissue and progesterone concentrations below 1 ng ml-1 at the beginning of the experiment. Although mean (+/- SEM) interval from the beginning of the experiment (Day 0) to wave emergence did not differ (P > 0.05) among treatment groups (Control, 1.9 +/- 1.0, range -2 to 7 d; CR, 3.9 +/- 0.7, range 0 to 6 d; CIDR, 2.8 +/- 0.5, range 0 to 4 d and CIDR + E-17 beta, 4.1 +/- 0.2, range 3 to 5), the variability was less (P < 0.05) in the CIDR + E-17 beta group. The proportion of cows ovulating 24 to 48 h after GnRH administration tended (P = 0.08) to be higher in cows from CIDR + E-17 beta group (8/9) than in those of CR (5/8) or CIDR (6/9) groups, respectively and was associated with a higher proportion (P < 0.05) of CIDR + E-17 beta treated cows (9/9) that had a dominant follicle in the growing/early static phase at the time of GnRH treatment compared to the other GnRH treated groups (5/8, and 4/9 for CR and CIDR groups, respectively). Two CR cows ovulated 0-24 h after GnRH and only one Control cow ovulated the day before the time of GnRH administration. Cows pretreated with progesterone had longer (P < 0.05) luteal lifespan (CIDR, 14.5 +/- 0.7, CIDR + E-17 beta, 13.9 +/- 0.6 d) than those not treated with CIDR (Control, 5, CR, 4.0 +/- 0.4). We conclude that progesterone plus estradiol treatment results in tightly synchronized wave emergence and high GnRH-induced ovulation rate with normal luteal activity in postpartum beef cattle.

Improving the reproductive efficiency, pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring the resumption of luteal activity in indigenous damascus goats.

Seventy-five female Damascus goats aged between 1.5 and 5.5 years were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intravaginal sponges and prostaglandin analogue on oestrous synchronization and fecundity; to diagnose pregnancy and to monitor the resumption of the luteal activity. Females were divided randomly, during the breeding season, into three equal groups, S, P and C. Females in group S were fitted with sponges containing 45 mg of flugestone acetate (FGA) for 14 days and injected with pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) at the sponge withdrawal. Females in group P were given two injections of prostaglandin F2alpha analogue at 11-day intervals, whereas females in group C (control) received no treatment. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p < 0.001) in oestrous exhibition between females in group S as compared with those in groups P and C, with means being 30 +/- 10, 172 +/- 115 and 217 +/- 75 h for groups S, P and C, respectively. Kidding rates resulting from the first and all matings were 80 and 88, 52 and 88, and 68 and 80% for groups S, P and C, respectively. Fecundity rates were 215, 175 and 180% for groups S, P and C, respectively, with a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the S and both P and C groups. Using an ultrasound pregnancy detector performed on days 57 +/- 3 after mating, positive pregnancy diagnosis was 93.3% and 100% for non-pregnancy. Females in the control group showed functional corpus luteum starting in September. It is concluded that FGA sponges plus PMSG treatment could be successfully used to synchronize oestrus and improve fecundity; whereas prostaglandin treatment was not effective to synchronize oestrus. It is also concluded that pregnancy can be diagnosed accurately and successfully using an ultrasound pregnancy detector. In addition, ovarian activity in the Damascus goat in Syria resumes in September.

[Induction and synchronization of pregnancy in cows].

Inductions and synchronizations of parturitions by the analogue PG F2alpha, Cloprostenol, were tested in cows under production conditions. The average time from induction to delivery is 40.5 hours (33-49 hours). No significant relation exists between the length of gravidity and the time of delivery induction (correlation coefficient = -0.325). A scheme was proposed from the system of calving days in cows to organize synchronized parturitions. In production conditions the induction and synchronization of cow parturitions cannot be recommended because amnions are retained frequently (69.7%). No relationship was demonstrated between gravidity length at the time of delivery induction and the order of parturition in the cow (first-calver-cow).

Effect of beta-carotene supplementation on reproductive performance of dairy heifers.

Three trials were conducted to determine the effect of feeding supplemental beta-carotene on reproductive performance of Holstein heifers. In each trial, the animals were randomly assigned to either a control or treatment group. Animals in the treatment groups received 300 mg supplemental beta-carotene daily for the test periods which varied from 6 to 8 weeks in length. To facilitate sample collections and observations, estrus was synchronized with two injections of 25 mg PGF(2alpha) at 11 day intervals. The first injection was after 2 weeks of feeding supplemental beta-carotene. Blood serum beta-carotene concentrations were higher in the heifers fed supplemental beta-carotene as compared to concentrations in control heifers after 1 week of feeding and this difference increased throughout the test periods. The interval from the second injection of PGF(2alpha) to onset of estrus was shorter in the control heifers as compared to that interval in heifers supplemented with beta-carotene (trial 1,44.0 vs 56.0 hr; trial 2, 51.3 vs 70.8 hr; trial 3, 40.7 vs 62.5 hr, respectively). The intervals from PGF(2alpha) administration to the preovulatory LH peak (43.3 vs 61.5 hr) and ovulation (69.3 vs 85.9 hr) were also shorter in the control heifers in trial 3. No significant differences were found among treatments in the number of heifers that expressed estrus, the blood serum progesterone concentrations or the conception rates in any of the three trials.

Pregnancy rate after timed artificial insemination in early post-partum dairy cows after Ovsynch or specific synchronization protocols.

The present study was designed to compare the reproductive performance of pre-synchronized post-partum dairy cows subjected, either to the Ovsynch protocol without screening for ovarian status (control group), or to a specific oestrous synchronization protocol applied according to their ovarian status, as determined by transrectal ultrasound (experimental group). The study was conducted on 428 lactating dairy cows. Cows in the Ovsynch group (n = 205) were synchronized and time inseminated after receiving the Ovsynch protocol treatment. Cows in the specific synchronization (Ssynch) group (n = 223) were weekly subjected to transrectal ultrasound exams for 4 weeks, or until AI or starting treatment, and divided into four subgroups according to their ovarian status: (i). corpus luteum (CL) subgroup (n = 130), cows with a CL; (ii). natural oestrus (NE) subgroup (n = 58), cows showing NE; (iii). anovulatory follicles (AF) subgroup (n = 26), cows considered to have AF; and (iv). ovarian cysts (OC) subgroup (n = 9), cows with OC. Cows in the Ssynch group were synchronized and time inseminated following a specific oestrous synchronization protocol, or inseminated at NE. Logistic regression analysis was carried out for the dependent variables ovulation and pregnancy rates to first and to second AI (second AI: first AI + return AI). Cows subjected to Ssynch were 2.1 times more likely to become pregnant at first and at second AI compared with those synchronized using the Ovsynch protocol (P < 0.0001). Our results show that the response of post-partum pre-synchronized cows to a specific oestrous synchronization protocol applied according to their ovarian status is more effective than the response to the Ovsynch protocol applied without taking into account the ovarian status of the animals.

Effect of long- and short-term intravaginal progestagen treatments on synchronization of oestrus and fertility in heifers.

A total of 273 Herford cross heifers were treated with intravaginal progestagen pessaries to determine some of the factors affecting oestrous response and fertility following long-term (20-day) and short-term (10-day) treatments. Oestrous response and degree of synchronization were high after treatment for 20 days, but the fertility rate was lower than that of control heifers. There was no difference in the fertility of heifers inseminated artificially and those mated naturally. When the treatment period was reduced to 10 days and 900 mg progesterone and 5 mg oestradiol valerate given intramuscularly at the start, a high oestrous response and a low degree of synchronization resulted, but the conception rate was similar to that of the control animals. Reducing the dose of progesterone to 250 mg resulted in a high oestrous response and a high degree of synchronization. The stage of the cycle at the start of the 10-day treatment did not affect the oestrous response. Retention of the progesterone pessary was low (79-9%) in heifers treated for 2- days, but was 100% in those treated for 10 days.

The effect of interval from day of administration of bovine somatotropin (bST) to synchronization of ovulation and timed-insemination on conception rate of dairy cows with and without ovarian cysts.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the interval from the day of administration of bovine somatotropin (bST) to the day of initiation of synchronization of ovulation (Day 0 and 7) and timed-insemination (TAI) on conception rate (CR) of dairy cows with and without ovarian cysts, respectively. Lactating dairy cows (n = 359) were divided into two groups. Cows in Group 1 (n = 238, without ovarian cysts) were treated with 100 microg, i.m. GnRH on Day 0; 25 mg, i.m. PGF2a on Day 8. 100 mirog. i.m. GnRH on Day 10; and inseminated 16 h later without detection of estrus. Cows in Group 2 (n = 121, with ovarian cysts) were treated with 100 microg, i.m. GnRH on Day 0; 100 microg, i.m. GnRH on Day 7; 25 mg, i.m. PGF2alpha on Day 14, 100 ug, i.m. GnRH on Day 16; and inseminated 16 h later without detection of estrus. Between 60 and 63 days postpartum, all cows in the herd were given bST every 14 days for the duration of the study. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk of nonpregnancy associated with interval from bST treatment to Day 0 for cows without ovarian cysts. and both Day 0 and 7 for cows with ovarian cysts adjusting for parity and days in milk. The CR for cows in Group 1 was significantly higher when the interval from last treatment with bST to Day 0 was between 1 and 3 days (28%) compared to 4-6 days (14%). In addition, the risk of nonpregnancy was 2.19 times greater in cows 4-6 days after bST treatment compared to 1-3 days after adjusting for parity and days in milk. The CR for cows in Group 2 was not significantly different when the interval from last treatment with bST to both Day 0 and 7 was between 1 and 3, 4 and 6, and 7 and 14 days. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested bST treatment closer to Day 0 had a positive effect on CR of cows without ovarian cysts, but bST treatment closer to both Day 0 and 7 had no effect on CR of cows with ovarian cysts. This was interpreted to mean that bST had a beneficial effect on either, or both, the preovulatory follicle and the oocyte in dairy cows without ovarian cysts, but not in dairy cows with ovarian cysts.

Reduction in size of the ovulatory follicle reduces subsequent luteal size and pregnancy rate.

We hypothesized that reducing the size of the ovulatory follicle using aspiration and GnRH would reduce the size of the resulting CL, reduce circulating progesterone concentrations, and alter conception rates. Lactating dairy cows (n=52) had synchronized ovulation and AI by treating with GnRH and PGF2alpha as follows: Day -9, GnRH (100 microg); Day -2, PGF2alpha (25 mg); Day 0, GnRH (100 microg); Day 1, AI. Treated cows (aspirated group; n=29) had all follicles > 4 mm in diameter aspirated on Days -5 or -6 in order to start a new follicular wave. Control cows (nonaspirated group: n=23) had no follicle aspiration. The size of follicles and CL were monitored by ultrasonography. The synchronized ovulation rate (ovulation rate to second GnRH injection: 42/52=80.8%) and double ovulation rate of synchronized cows (6/42=14.3%) did not differ (P > 0.05) between groups. Aspiration reduced the size of the ovulatory follicle (P < 0.0001; 11.5 +/- 0.2 vs 14.5 +/- 0.4 mm), and serum estradiol concentrations at second GnRH treatment (P < 0.0002; 2.5 +/- 0.4 vs 5.7 +/- 0.6 pg/mL). The volume of CL was less (P < 0.05) for aspirated than nonaspirated cows on Day 7 (2,862 +/- 228 vs 5,363 +/- 342 mm3) or Day 14 (4,652 +/- 283 vs 6,526 +/- 373 mm3). Similarly, serum progesterone concentrations were less on Day 7 (P < 0.05) and Day 14 (P < 0.10) for aspirated cows. Pregnancy rate per AI for synchronized cows was lower (P < 0.05) for aspirated (3/21=14.3%) than nonaspirated (10/21=47.6%) cows. In conclusion, ovulation of smaller follicles produced lowered fertility possibly because development of smaller CL decreased circulating progesterone concentrations.

Prostaglandin F2alpha treatment associated with timed artificial insemination in ewes.

Traditional treatments of two prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2alpha) doses at 10-day intervals or more did not result in acceptable pregnancy rates in timed artificial insemination (TAI) programmes in ewes. An explanation might be the undefined time-period of the onset of oestrus and ovulation after the treatment. Recently a consistent interval to oestrus and ovulation was obtained by giving PGF2alpha at day 3 post-ovulation, i.e. when the largest follicle of the first follicular wave of the cycle was still growing. This can be achieved when a second dose of PGF2alpha is given 7 days after a first dose. In this work, we evaluated the synchronization of oestrus and determined which of three different moments of TAI was the most successful using a PGF2alpha (PG-7d) protocol in a large flock. A total of 436 nulliparous and multiparous ewes were treated with two doses of a PGF2alpha analogue (delprostenate 160 microg, i.m.) separated by 7 days. Onset of oestrus was recorded twice a day and a single cervical TAI with fresh undiluted semen was performed either at 42 h (n = 152), 48 h (n = 120), or 54 h (n = 164), after the second PGF2alpha dose without taking into account the oestrous response. Pregnancy rate was determined by transrectal ultrasonography 30 days after insemination. Onset of oestrus was detected in 308 of 328 and 89 of 108 multiparous and nulliparous ewes, respectively (p < 0.001), within 72 h after treatment. The distribution of the onset of oestrus did not differ between multiparous and nulliparous ewes and the highest proportion of ewes in oestrus was detected between 25 to 48 h (313/397) from the second PGF2alpha dose. The pregnancy rate in ewes inseminated at 42 h tended to be higher than those inseminated at 48 h (p = 0.09) and was higher than those inseminated at 54 h (p < 0.05) (56/152, 31/120, 37/164; respectively). Therefore, the use of the PG-7d protocol resulted in a very high synchronization of oestrus with the highest concentration (around 80%) between 25 to 48 h from the end of treatment. The best pregnancy rate (37%) was obtained after a single cervical TAI with fresh semen at 42 h.

Effect of short-term calf removal at three stages of a follicular wave on fate of a dominant follicle in postpartum beef cows.

The hypothesis that ovulation in response to short-term (48 h) calf removal (CR) is dependent on the developmental stage of the dominant follicle was tested in two studies. The objective of Exp. 1 was to characterize the fate of a dominant follicle following 48-h CR on d 2, 4, or 8 of a postpartum follicular wave. Ovaries of 61 beef cows were examined daily by transrectal ultrasonography starting at d 20 to 21 postpartum. Treatments were no CR (n = 14) and CR on d 2 (n = 12), 4 (n = 16), or 8 (n = 10) of first detected follicular wave. Percentage of cows that ovulated a dominant follicle following treatment was not different among groups (P = 0.62). Maximum size of dominant follicles was larger in cows that ovulated (P = 0.002) than in cows that did not ovulate. The objectives of Exp. 2 were 1) to determine whether a follicular wave could be synchronized in anestrous cows following injection of 1 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) and 200 mg of progesterone (P4; EB + P4); 2) to characterize the fate of dominant follicles following 48-h CR at three stages of a synchronized follicular wave; and 3) to determine whether estrous cycles of normal length followed ovulation in cows pretreated with EB + P4. Ovaries of 50 anestrous beef cows were examined daily as in Exp. 1. Treatments were sesame oil (SO) injected (i.m.) on d 25 postpartum and no CR (n = 9); EB + P4 and no CR (n = 9); EB + P4 and CR on 6 (n = 12), 8 (n = 9), or 12 (n = 11) d after injection. The EB and P4 injections were given on d 25 postpartum. Variability in day of emergence of subsequent follicular waves was lower in cows receiving EB + P4 than in SO-injected cows (P < 0.05). The percentage of cows that ovulated was not different (P = 0.16), but CR increased the percentage of cows that ovulated when groups that received EB + P4 were compared to the EB + P4 group that did not have CR (53.1 vs 11.1%, respectively; P < 0.05). Maximum diameter of dominant follicles was larger (P = 0.05) in ovulatory follicles. The luteal phase was longer (P < 0.03) in cows receiving EB + P4 injection (10.6 +/- 1.2 d) than in cows receiving SO (4.4 +/- 2.2 d). In summary, the maximum size of ovulatory follicles was greater than that of nonovulatory follicles, the ovulatory response of postpartum anestrous cows was maintained through d 8 of a follicular wave, synchronization of follicular waves was accomplished in postpartum cows using EB + P4, and the subsequent luteal phase length was increased in animals that were administered EB + P4.

Bovine model of reproductive aging: response to ovarian synchronization and superstimulation.

The responsiveness of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis to steroid treatments for ovarian synchronization and the ovarian superstimulatory response to exogenous FSH was compared in 13-14 year old cows and their 1-4 year old young daughters. We tested the hypotheses that aging in cattle is associated with: (1) decreased follicular wave synchrony after estradiol and progesterone treatment; (2) delayed LH surge and ovulation in response to exogenous preovulatory estradiol treatment; (3) reduced superstimulatory response to exogenous FSH. Higher plasma FSH concentrations (P<0.01), and a tendency (P=0.07) for fewer 4-5 mm follicles at wave emergence were observed in old cows (n=10) than in young cows (n=9). The suppressive effect of estradiol/progesterone treatment on FSH was similar between old and young cows. Although the preovulatory LH surge in response to estradiol treatment was delayed in old than young cows (P=0.01), detected ovulation times were not different. No difference in ovarian superstimulatory response was detected between age groups, but old cows (n=8) tended (P=0.10) to have fewer large follicles (>or=9 mm) 12 h after last FSH treatment than in young cows (n=7). We concluded that pituitary and ovarian responsiveness to estradiol/progesterone synchronization treatment was similar between old and young cows, but aging was associated with a delayed preovulatory LH surge subsequent to estradiol treatment. Old cows tended to have fewer large follicles after superstimulatory treatment than young cows.

Pregnancy rates in lactating Holstein-Friesian cows after artificial insemination with sexed sperm.

The effects of artificial insemination (AI) using sexed sperm on pregnancy rates have seldom been studied in lactating dairy cows on commercial dairy farms. We evaluated pregnancy results after AI of 306 lactating dairy cows, of which 157 were inseminated with 2x10(6) frozen/thawed sexed sperm and 149 with 15x10(6) frozen/thawed unsexed sperm. The average pregnancy and calving rates were 21.0% and 20% for the sexed-sperm AIs and 46% and 45% for the unseparated control-sperm AIs respectively (p<0.001). The proportion of female calves derived from sexed-sperm AI was 82% compared with 49% for control AI (p<0.01). The proportion of live and healthy calves in single births was 100% for sexed-sperm AI and 97% for control AI (p>0.05). Our results indicate that AI with low-dose sexed sperm under field conditions in commercial dairy herds without oestrus synchronization results in significantly reduced pregnancy rates compared with normal-dose AI. Improved insemination strategies combined with increased sperm doses are needed before the use of sexed sperm can be of any significant benefit for the dairy and beef industry.

Effects of hormonal treatments on reproductive performance and embryo production.

Developments in the use of drugs to improve reproduction and embryo production have focused on estrus and ovulation synchronization protocols and embryonic survival. Protocols for synchronization of ovulation eliminate the need for detection of estrus and allow timed insemination of all cows enrolled. Various estrogenic, progestational, GnRH and PGF2 alpha-like drugs are used to synchronize follicle development, CL regression and induction of ovulation. Strategies are discussed to optimize such programs to maximize herd pregnancy rates. Use of bovine Somatotrophin (bST) in combination with the Ovsynch protocol resulted in increased pregnancy rates, indicating possible effects on oocyte and embryonic development. Treatment of embryo donor cows with bST reduced the proportion of unfertilized oocytes and increased the number of transferable embryos. Furthermore, bST increased pregnancy rate when given to the recipient. Sub-luteal plasma progesterone concentrations after insemination have been associated with lower pregnancy rates. Injection of hCG on day 5 post-insemination resulted in induction of an accessory CL, increased plasma progesterone concentrations and increased conception rates. Strategies involving the use of sustained GnRH agonists to enhance CL development and alter follicular development are considered for future programs to enhance pregnancy rates.

Second oestrus synchronization and precocious embryo viability after puberty induction in gilts by the use of gonadotrophin treatment.

The use of exogenous gonadotrophins in puberty inducement and ovulation synchronization is a technique that has a positive influence on the management of swine. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of a second gonadotrophin treatment [equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) and luteinizing hormone (LH), intramuscularly (i.m.)] upon the second oestrus synchronization and fertility in gilts. Seventy-one NAIMA (Pen Ar Lan) gilts had their first oestrus (puberty inducement) induced by a hormonal treatment (eCG and LH). Then, they were randomly distributed into two treatments, with (T1) and without (C) gonadotrophin treatment at the second oestrus. The animals were fed with a single ration (16% of crude protein and 3286.73 kcal ME/kg), and timed artificial insemination performed at the second oestrus. Gilts were slaughtered for embryo recovery and ovary examination about 5 days after insemination. There was no evidence of a difference in the percentage of the second oestrus expression (T1 - 90.90% and C - 86.84%), the duration of the oestrus cycle (T1 - 19.62 +/- 0.82 days and C - 19.67 +/- 4.14 days), the percentage of follicular cysts (T1 - 15.15% and C - 18.42%) and number of ovulations (T1 - 14.60 +/- 5.7 and C - 13.23 +/- 4.8) between treatments (p > 0.05). However, the hormonal treatment (T1) showed minor oestrus dispersion and embryo viability (T1 - 8.4 +/- 5.6 and C - 11.2 +/- 4.6) (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the better synchronization and expression of the second oestrus when using gonadotrophins (eCG and LH) is followed by a lower embryo viability, which is probably the consequence of the heterogeneous follicle recruitment during the injection of eCG.

Oestrus synchronization of dairy heifers - follow-up of the fertility of treated animals.

Field materials have been examined as regards the fertility of animals which have been oestrus synchronized as heifers. One material of 104 animals has been followed during three pregnancies and one material of 828 heifers has been studied as regards the interval between inseminations of animals returning to heat. Heifers in the same herds, inseminated during the same period of time as the synchronized animals, have been used as control animals. The studied parameters have shown no difference between the control group and the treated group. One exception is however that the conception rate after AI in induced oestrus was somewhat higher than the result of the first AI for the control animals.

Estrous synchronization and establishment of pregnancy in bovine embryo transfer recipients.

Characteristics of donors, embryos, recipients, and transfer procedures were examined for relationships with establishment of pregnancy. Data were from records of 1202 embryos transferred by the professional staff of a large embryo transfer company. Average pregnancy rate was 74.6%. Variables affecting establishment of pregnancy were service sire, embryo quality, stage of estrous cycle in recipient, quadratic effect of synchrony, and transfer quality. Because the direct or indirect effect of sire must be established at conception, these data demonstrate a latent effect of sire on pregnancy. One would expect the highest pregnancy rate among excellent quality embryos transferred with no delays or complications into recipients that had displayed estrus at the same time or prior to the donor yet were relatively early in their estrous cycles. There also was a tendency for pregnancy rate to decrease with advancing maturity of the embryo.
