The supplementation of vitamin-B complex reduces lead intoxication. With a view to identify the components of vitamin-B complex responsible for such protection, riboflavin, calcium pentothenate, pyridoxine, nicotinamide, folic acid and cyanocobalamine were investigated for their ability, and their influence on the efficacy of disodium calcium versenate (Na2CaEDTA), to enhance the urinary excretion of lead, mobilize tissue lead and restore lead induced biological alterations in lead intoxicated rats. Folic acid and pyridoxine besides thiamine may be the responsible factors in prophylaxis of lead poisoning by vitamin B complex or in enhancing the antidotal properties of Na2CaEDTA.

The effect of vitamin B-complex on cadmium nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity was investigated in rats. The administration of Cd (3 mg per kg, s.c., three days) increased the urinary excretions of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT), and total proteins, decreased renal activities LDH and GOT and increased concentration in kidney tissue of Cd, Cu, and Zn, Cadmium also increased serum BOT and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), decreased hepatic activities of GOT and GPT, and increased hepatic levels of Cd and Zn. The supplementation of vitamin B-complex (10 mg per kg, orally) simultaneously with Cd caused less marked biological alterations. Cadmium concentration in renal tissue was significantly less on the eighth day whereas the hepatic level of Cd was unaffected by vitamin supplementation. The protective effect of vitamin B-complex in Cd toxicity may be attributed to the interference by the constituents of vitamin B-complex in body absorption of Cd, possibly through forming readily excretable complexes. The results suggest that Cd toxicity can be reduced by vitamin B-complex supplementation.

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality, is a more common neuropsychiatric sequela of alcohol misuse than is widely realized. It is easily prevented and treated with parenteral B-complex vitamins, although this treatment is widely under-utilized.
Effect of potassium permanganate, cobalt chloride and vitamin B complex on the haematological parameters of common carp Cyprinus carpio were markedly influenced by a treatment of 2.5 mg/l Cd in the laboratory for 96 hours. Hb% and ESR values were increased but the RBC and PCV values were reduced. Treatment of KMnO4 (1 mg/l) or CoCl2 (2 mg/l) induced a further reduction of RBC of the Cd treated fish. But parameters like PCV, MCV and MCH of Cd treated fish were not affected by the treatment of KMnO4 and CoCl2. Intramuscular injection of vitamin B complex did not produce any impact on ESR and MCV values of the Cd treated exposed fish but most of the other parameters of such fish were found comparable to control indicating that vitamin B complex could counteract Cd to reduce its ill effect.

In rats repeatedly treated with dexamethasone, body weight decreased severely, creatine content in urine increased, tetanic contraction of the gastrocnemius muscle decayed easily and twitch tension of the muscle had a slow rise time. In a group of rats given large doses of vitamin B complex along with the anabolic steroid, nandrolone phenylproprionate, all syndromes described above for the dexamethasone-treated rats were prevented, dose dependently by vitamin B complex. The individual components of the vitamin B preparation combined with the nandrolone phenylpropionate partially suppressed the changes induced by dexamethasone. Diphenylhydantoin depressed the slow rise time of twitch tension as effectively as did vitamin B complex with nandrolone phenylpropionate. From the results presented here and facts previously reported it was concluded that the condition of the animals could be well controlled by repeated administration of vitamin B complex with nandrolone phenylpropionate, even though dexamethasone was repeatedly injected.
Studies were to determine the effect of various factors upon B-vitamin content of cultured yogurt and to compare the B-vitamin contents of cultured and direct acidified yogurt. Incubation of yogurt culture at 42 C for 3 h yielded maximum vitamin synthesis concurrent with optimal flavor and texture qualities. A method was standardized for the manufacture of direct acidified yogurt involving the use of Stabilac acidulant and nonfat dry milk, Carboxymethyl cellulose, gelatin, and Starite. Acidified yogurt showed a slightly higher content of certain B-vitamins than the cultured yogurt due to the contribution made by various food additives. Both cultured and acidified yogurt showed good keeping quality and freedom from microbial contaminants during storage at 5 C for 16 days. However, folic acid and vitamin B12 contents decreased 29 and 60% in cultured yogurt and 48 and 54% in acidified yogurt.
